The basic purpose of a monk is to achieve salvation by following the path of religion while guiding the society. Sadhus and Sanyasis give the Vedokta knowledge to the world while doing meditation and penance and live their lives with renunciation and quietness and merge in devotion to God. They are not infatuated with money, but these gems are an essential part of their adornment. Kabir says that a sage is hungry for love, he is not hungry for money. A religious ascetic, mendicant or any pious person is one who has renounced worldly life. They are sometimes alternatively referred to as Yogis, Sanyasis or Vairagis. They are the real sages.
