Mother wasn't ever a kind woman but bled willingly to keep our family safe. With a firm hand and colder voice, she taught us how unkind the world could be and how we must be just as unkind to survive.
But this wasn't always so.
Mhamo would comfort me after the arguments, my mistakes, anytime misery would creep into my heart. 'Weep not, leanbh. Her ire was never meant to be yours.' None of these words made sense to me until I was old enough to understand loss, that is when Mhamo finally told me the story of my mother's first love. How many years ago, her heart was given to another; someone brave, warm and silly.
Benji. He had chestnut hair with a smile as bright as the sun, a farmer to many but a father for two children. Their romance, she told me, was a temperate and unpredictable kind but passionate. It wasn't destined to last as their trust would be placed to the test one fateful evening, after his children were kidnapped with only a note left behind: their safety will be promised if gil is brought below, into the ravenous caverns.
My mother knew well what happened down there, between the sharp rocks and molded moss. Where blood was spilled to feed a family of moth-eaten silhouettes in robes, promising life to an entity that lingered in the sky - blazing so red. She begged him not to go, yelled and screamed for him to grasp the edges of this orchestrated trap. To leave his own and flee, for they were already dead.
Her words broke his heart, so he broke hers with silence and departed to rescue them.
Mhamo recalls on the night this sacrifice was made, she warned her daughter to not leave but my mother refused and went below, slaying anyone who stood in between her and Benji. The passages were vast, suffocating and winding. They stunk of death but the walls were alive with praise and wounded screams of unfortunate victims.
It was foolish of me to feel hope and believe she found them in time, for the rest of Mhamo's story only weighed further in my chest when she explained that mother was too late. That her cries were echoed so deeply some heard from above, the rotting walls unable to contain the misery and fury growing deep her chest. When Benji's remains were recovered suns later, none could find the remains of his children, and his identity nearly faded into obscurity as many couldn't recognize the corpse.
With lips so blue, too cold to laugh.
Bones twisted broken, unable to walk in sunlight.
Eyes sunken and white, never to behold again.
Flesh infested with rot, the maggots called him home.
Sometimes I feel there's a hole inside me,
an emptiness that at times seems to burn.
I have this dream of being whole,
I'm not going to sleep each night wanting but.. still sometimes..
When the wind is warm and the crickets sing -
I dream of a love that even time will lie down and be still for.
If we're roleplaying on Discord, or if I'm starting the interaction - it'll be somewhat long because I like setting the environment but I think that everything is subject to change.
Some scenes may require longer replies and actions, others are short yet sweet but I interchange between both. What I would ask is to not force yourself to write long or to match others - it only brings exhaustion.
