Lily approaches him quietly, smiling warmly as she wraps her arms around his shoulders. “Happy Birthday, sweetheart.” she says, ducking down to look at his profile — he’s sitting on his favourite armchair by the fireplace, so for once, she can easily look into his eyes without having to look up.
How much he’s grown, she can hardly comprehend it. Her baby is seventeen today. Seventeen. When did it happen?
It seemed like he was a little boy mere days ago, barely reaching her waist, and now…he’s all grown up.
He looks to the side, flashing her a smile. “Thanks, Mum.”
“I can’t believe my boy is an adult now.” she chuckles, though her throat feels tight all the same. “Weren’t you just in first year?”
He laughs, twisting around to properly face her. “Well,” he replies. “Six years ago.”
“God,” she breathes. “Feels like yesterday.”
He stands up — he’s at least a head taller than her. “It feels forever ago to me.” he shrugs. “Like time moved slower.”
She chuckles, shaking her head. “No, trust me,” she sighs as she takes his hand. “It was fast.”
Too fast, perhaps. At least to her.
“Alright,” he concedes. “I guess some of it went by fast…would’ve loved another year as captain.”
She rolls her eyes, following his glance towards the new broom James and Sirius had gifted him just earlier. “Mhm, you are your Father’s son.” she muses.
“He says the same ‘bout you.” Harry replies amusedly.
Her own smile stretches, almost painfully so, as she takes in Harry’s grown features. “You do have my eyes.” she agrees proudly.
“Yeah,” he smiles back, reaching down now to give her a hug. “I do.”
