Monobear Theater | A Shocking Trip Down Memory Lane
In all of his days on this blue earth, Minoru never thought that he would die like this. After all, he expected a good life ahead of him: political power, riches, anything he could ever want at his fingertips. To have it pulled away from him was the worst thing that could happen. Minoru was yanked from his stand as sharply as his dreams were from under him. The cold metal around his neck spelt the end of Minoru Fukui. It seemed like he would have to come to terms with it.
The lights went off, plunging the room into a sudden silence. Somewhere in the distance, you could hear a muffled âdonât touch me,â echoing around the room. âStop that!â âUnhand me!â Yep, that was Minoru. âThat h-hurts! I w-w-want one more minute! Please!â
Suddenly, the lights came on to static filled screens that covered all sides of the room. The remaining students were surrounded by the cold fizzle of no signal. The sound filled every corner of the room and was like an overbearing presence on the living students.
Finally, the main projector lit up and showed the man of the hour. Minoru Fukui was strapped down into what looked like an electric chair, his hands and feet bound to the cold seat by metal cuffs and a band around his chest, holding him upright. On top of that, there was a glowing crown-looking device around his head. It pulsed with electricity every second or so.
The room behind him was dark; it was impossible to tell where he was. All that could be heard from that screen was the familiar laugh of Monobear.
Suddenly the crown fully lit up. One of the screens came to life and broke the blanket of static that was polluting the air.
âYouâre never going to be happy if you think like that.â
The speaker was a Japanese man, his wrinkles like valleys set deep in his face carved from rivers of stress and old age.
âSure, weâre not doing the most ethical thing but it makes us money! Life is so much easier with money.â
âThatâs right , f-f-fatherâ
Was that Minoruâs voice? It sounded like it but younger, free of the angry undertones that always seemed to lurk under the surface of every word he stuttered. Although everyone knew it was the ginger, he didnât appear in the shot.
âWho cares if a few people get hurt? Weâre rich!â
Just as quickly as it came on, the screen turned off. The screen flickered back to life and the face of a young man in a lab coat smiled down at the camera.
âIâd love to take you to the marine biology lab, little guy! Iâm sure your father wouldnât mind.â
Childish giggling followed.
âYou know you can talk around me. That whole sign thing your parents do is silly. Your voice isnât that hard to listen to.â
The screens changed again, switching from one to another with almost lightning speed. No matter where the students stood in the room, they could hear whatever the TVs played in surround sound.
âCan you try signing the âkaâ sign for me? Good! Youâre getting so much better at this, Minoru. Maybe if you could get a better control of your shaking, youâd be perfect!â
Perfect. The word leaked from every TV set in the room in unison. Perfect was a word that haunted Minoru for his whole life. It was something he was always told he could be, but never told that he was. He was told that he was more of a-
â-disgrace to the Fukui family name! How dare you disobey me?â
It was the voice of the old man from before, his chair faced away from the camera this time. The cracking of a fire could be heard in the distance as he shouted.
âIâm your father! Unless you want to be sent back to that shit town in Ireland, youâll do EXACTLY as I say. You know youâre only here for one reason: to-â
â-tell me how youâve been doing so well in school! Mr. Fukui, you are getting high marks in all your classes and I havenât seen you take notes once!â
A school teacher towered over the camera, occasionally smacking a ruler down on the desk.
âAre you cheating? I know your father is a respectable man, but that doesnât save you-â
â-from what weâre about to do to you.â
The location changed from the school room to the schoolâs front gates.
âLittle rich boy Fukui wants to avoid us? Ohohoho, thatâs not going to happen.â
The camera angle suddenly shifted as if this middle schooler had picked the camera up and angled it towards him.
That screen then came to a shot of the camera being dropped to the floor and multiple fists flying at the lens. The distant chats of âfightâ could be heard over the shallow gasps and sputters coming from the camera. While this was happening, a video of Yue appeared right next to it. She was shouting.
âBèn tiÄnshÄng de yÄŤ duÄŤ ròu!! YĂ o zÇu yÄ gÄn hĂłuzi bÇ diĹŤ shÇ!! QĂš nÇ mÄ de!â
Unless you were fluent in Chinese, no one had no clue what that meant. Both of the videos started at the same time. The screen that depicted Yue showed her running away and it was replaced by the same video as the school yard fight.
âSomeone get the nurse! We need-â
Both of the screens shattered.
â-a doctor! Someone, radio in a doctor this second!â
The image was now one of the high seas. Two men in diving gear and one without, all surrounding a third diver laying on his side. Off of the stern of the boat ran a river of blood, tainting the ocean a sick pink with fins cutting through the surface.
âDr. Fukui, he was bitten by the largest sea snake Iâve ever seen! He panicked and the splashing drew the sharks in. Itâs so bad, Fukui. What do we do?â
âI-I-I-I-I-â
âNow is not the time for you to lose your voice. Youâre one of the head scientists on this mission, do something!â
The shot moved to show a deep gash in the diverâs leg that almost separated the thigh from the calf. Two seconds later, the screen shattered and the picture was lost.
If any of the students even so much as glanced over at the screen with Minoru on it, they could see that he was in pain. Every few seconds or so a large pulse would illuminate the crown he was wearing. Strangely enough, all the screens flickered slightly at those exact same moments. He would strain against the firm bindings, his eyes darting around the room as fast as physically possible.
âH-h-here you go, Mr. Suoh.â
A different Japanese man took center stage in this frame. He had a page in his hand and was scanning it carefully.
âImpressive, Minoru-kun. You always take your time with these notes, theyâre so detailed.â
âWell, I figured that you n-n-needed them to reme-â
âDid you bring along a friend?â
Those words made the camera scan all around this small apartment. Finally, it rested on a small girl with dyed hair and a pair of glasses. Although the word never escaped her vocal chords, she mouthed the word âdadâ before she turned and ran into a different room. The camara man chased after her.
âAi! He didnât mean it!â
âThese pictures came out well!â
It was the same girl as before, except her expression was happy this time. She smiled up at the camera and handed over the photo booth roll. It depicted Minoru and this girl smiling and posing, he actually looked happy for once.
âThis is the last time I get to go on a day trip with you before you go to Hopeâs Peak, right? Minnie, please stay safe there, okay? I know you wonât forget me, so I wonât remind you to write!â
Suddenly, the screen went out like a light and broke into a million pieces. The explosions were getting more forceful with every new scene depicted.
The first voice popped up again. Minoru was standing in front of his fatherâs desk and he was not happy.
âYou arenât allowed to hang out with that girl. It leaves a bad image on the family name. Hanging out with such poverty stricken people, it makes me sick. You are to cease all contact with her, you understand? Donât even think of messaging her, I put a parental lock on your computer. I also saw that paper you were writing on whales. I took the initiative and deleted that for you. You donât need to focus on anything other than the family business.â
There was the sound of a choked âyes, sirâ before that screen shattered as well, sending sparks and glass into the air.
One of the only people that could stand him and he was never able to see her again.
One of the larger screens showed Cerys standing in front of the information kiosk.
âAre y-y-you sure youâre okay with this? We can always go back be-before I pull the trigger.â
âPlease do it, itâs better for everyone.â
A gun rose from the bottom of the screen and pointed straight at Cerysâ heart.
âAny-anything you want me to pass on?â
âPlease take care of Yori. I just want them to be safe.â
âThat all? Anything else?â
âNo, I think thatâs a-â
The gun fired mid sentence and Cerys collapsed to the ground with a soft thump. Minoru walked closer and knelt next to the body, removing her glasses to close her eyes. The screen faded to black.
âYou remind me of an elephant.â
The voice came from another screen on the other side of the room. It was the face of a jolly looking woman looking down at wherever the camera was.
Again, the voice was Minoruâs, even younger than before. It almost sounded like he could barely force out a simple sentence.
âYou know that your voice is hard to listen to, darling. Try signing it insteadâŚâ
Current Minoru shook in his chair and was gripping at the armrests. More and more electrical shocks came and made everything feel like it was burning. His feet and hands were swollen. The pain was more and more unbearable by the second. Sadly, the other students were probably too distracted by the light show outside to notice his writhing in pain.
The memories flashing across the screen were crystal clear, and were getting louder.
âA disgrace to the Fukui name!â
âNo one will ever love you, youâre so ugly. The only person who would even marry you would be after it for the money.â
The voices came in waves now, taking up different screens all over the room.
âWhy do you remind me of an elephant? Well, you have your cute big ears and your buck teeth. Thatâs two things, but youâll grow into those.â
She was right about the teeth, but not the ears.
âYou have flat feet, you love the water. For some reason you literally charge at things when angry.â
âUgly foreigner!â
âFocus on your studies, these stupid animals will have to wait.â
âI canât believe they chose to adopt you out of everyone in that orphanage. They all deserved it more than you.â
âBig brother, why canât we call you Lyle anymore?â
âThatâs NOT your name anymore! Your name is Minoru Fukui, got that? No more of this âOâHareâ stuff! Minoru Fukui is your REAL name now, legally. I donât care what they used to call you. Leave that and everything else back in Ireland. Youâre a new person now!â
âIâll give you a smack to the face for every freckle you got on there, kay? Maybe itâll be enough to knock them all off!â
âTwenty five people in the whole world have your gift, and I managed to basically pick you out of a dumpster,â his father laughed, âYou should be thankful. You will be a successful man, even with your pathetic voice. All you have to thank is me and your⌠hyper⌠what was it?â
âBig ears was the main thing. Although the next part, I donât think this is really true about elephants, it still does apply to you, goose.â
âWhat is the name of your damn condition? Your stupid speech shouldnât get in the way of a one word answer!â
âHyperthymesia, sir. Thatâs w-w-what itâs called.â
âYou also have that cute, little thing where you never seem to forget a single thing!â
All the screens went black for a few seconds, the only light shining was the on the screen where he was taking his final breaths. The ginger was shaking and tears were streaming down his face. It seemed he had been electrocuted many times while no one was watching, he was just barely able to hang on.
âWhatâs that, m-m-mama?â
One last screen came to life, showing a large shark swimming along.
âThatâs called a whale shark! Isnât it cool?â
âIt has fffffreckles, just like m-m-me!â
âWell, you could say that.â
âDo you think I could ride it?â
âItâs far too big.â
Small, pale hands reached out and pounded on the glass.
âS-s-s-sir Big Shark! I w-w-want my ride!â
âHaha, be careful riding it. He might try and⌠EAT YOU!â
âHehehe! Mama, donât ssssscare me like that!â
The childish giggling continued until it eventually faded out with the last screen. The courtroom was filled with silence.
Lyle OâHare, SHSL Marine Biologist, has been executed.
