Inflaming Purile Lies with the Gilt of Sin | Calandra | Motive Reaction | Monoko
monoworldmascot:
As the motive was being revealed, Monoko was more intent on watching those around her than the fool. No, not to identify those who might have motive to act on this motive, instead to find those who appeared to be taking it badly, to be scared. Calandra fit that bill, at least in Monokoâs eyes. She remembered her reaction to the first motive, running off and praying for⌠ruuning off and praying.
Now she stood there, silent and shaking. This wasnât a reaction the mascot had come to expect from the consigliere. She always seemed so composed, so certain of herself. Being the lovable caring creature she is, Monoko couldnât leave someone in that state, let alone someone she considered a friend.
As Monoko approached however, the girl managed to find her composure, regardless, Monoko knew all too well that it was possible to maintain appearances while undergoing an internal crisis. This may have been one such time. She wasnât concerned that her âsecretsâ would be revealed. More that it was causing such an effect on others. She worried what pains could be dredged up by the fool, and how they could hurt her fellow alumni. She worried that someone may try to stop it. Luckily the mask prevented this concern from being made public as she placed a hand on Calandraâs shoulder. âHeya Jeggare-san!â She spoke in her usual cheery voice despite recent events. âHow are you holding up?â Genuine concern could be heard behind her voice. âIf you want, we can go to the chapel again. I donât mind.â Admittedly the last time had made her uncomfortable, but right now, her comfort was not a priority. âOr⌠we can just talk?â She offered. âO-or if you need some alone time, thatâs okay too. Iâm here for you. Whatever you need.â That kind of offer is dangerous to make Monoko.
Someone was talking. Can she hear them? No. Only barely. She is thinking. That is what is important. The Queen shan't be interrupted while she is in thought, wondering, pondering. What could the Fool know? What could it say? What would happen, hrm? All these thoughts are rushing through her as she traces her tattoos.
Ah... There IS someone there. How rude of Calandra. She'll have to answer now. How annoying. How frustrating. How... useful. Its a distraction. (No Calandra, a person)
"Ah? Oh, Monoko-chan. I didn't see you there. I was a bit lost in thought. Troublesome, isn't it? Its... I won't say its nothing to worry about. Its very worrisome. But I don't know... what that Fool knows. I am not sure... perhaps it knows nothing of me. I don't think it can."
She turns, smiling. Its beautiful, her eyes shine.
Its horrifying. Its cold. It is like beholding a blade pulled from its sheath. Icy cold and hard as steel.
"Dead men and Made Men don't speak. And I know plenty of Made Men."
Inflaming Purile Lies with the Gilt of Sin | Calandra | Motive Reaction | Monoko
Another week, some fine conversation with Natsume. A new direction. A new thought. A new plan. Itâll work. It has to work. It has to has to has to has to.
And then the Fool calls them all up. And shoots its fucking mouth off, ranting and raving about how fascinating it finds the âdarknessâ of the human heart, the sin and depravation of a murder.
It lives up to its name then, is all Calandra can think.
A murder in self defense?By a weapon she did not consciously pull the trigger for? Dark? Depraved? Did⌠Did the fool think about who it spoke to? What Family Calandra spoke for?
All this⌠is⌠so childish. So shallow. So purposeless. Truly it was just another attempt by the Fool to create enough chaos to amuse itself.
âŚThen it manages to slip a needle into the cracks of Calandraâs queenly mask. A secret. A secret can only be kept by made men and dead men. Neither speaks. It couldnât know. It SHOULDNâT know.
But the thought that it might
Ah. All it takes, dear reader. Is the smallest bit of Chaos slipping in. To send a girl like Calandra into a tizzy, into a spiral of plots and plans all crashing down around her. Enough to force her hand? Maybe. Maybe not.
She stands there, silently shaking, mind working like a wartime factory, cranking out curses and thoughts in equal measure. A paranoid fit, perhaps. But one survives the underworld by being paranoid. Its justified at that point.
A few long moments and she is composed again. Her thoughts are straight and true, unbending, unyielding. She will call the Foolâs bluff again. She has to. Its the only play that makes any sense. She hopes no one else is⌠Is as dedicated as she is. To keeping the lips of men sealed shut.
Witches Sabbath Francisco Goya, 1789
Every Day, A Little More, You are Dying | Calandra | Body
She nursed herself, moving oh so gently, keeping half her face from the sun. Her eye hurt to look into the light. To say nothing of the massive welt that nearly swelled the eye shut.Â
Shin-san surely could throw a punch, the Pit-Dammed Bitch. Devil help Calandra, her perfect complexion ruined by a brute who canât see the big picture. Who canât understand the necessity of the JeggareâŚ
And now what? Dear Natsume has found a corpse. The painter boy. Aki, was it? How⌠dreadful. The scent of blood is clinging, awful, terrible. Rife with impurity. How did the shinto call it? Kegare? Something like that. Its justâŚ
Why its so blindingly stupid. If the Fool wanted something interesting, would not vandalism, destruction of property, arson of one flavor or another? Would that have not fulfilled the âFelonyâ requirement? What idiot would skip straight to murderâŚ.
And even now, the Fool calls them monstersâŚ
âTchâŚâ How many times must Calandra be called a monster before this is done?
Mack The Knife|Chapter 1|Calandra
âHey! Hey Callie!â
For someone in so dire a situation, Shinâs mood seemed excellent, or at the very least she was excellent at faking it. With how casual her wave was as she headed towards her pal, it really may have felt like she was just enjoying a nice stroll through the small village. Such excellent weather, after all. And such nice scenery.
Calandraâs choice of it had been the duck pond, nicely central, just behind the cottages where they had all made their homes by now, and Shin, having just returned from her dinner (lacklustre as always, in this place), had seen that choice and decided to join her in it.
The smaller girl turned upon her call, only slightly, only enough to see who it was approaching her, and after confirming it to be the dancer, gave that small, soft smile, more like velvet used to smother than to soothe, which Shin took as an invitation, or at least not an open rejection of her company. She covered the distance between them in large strides, and came to a stop next to Calandra.
âPretty wild stuff, huh? That whole Fool business.â
Her hands were in her pockets, her eyes on the pond in front of them, and her light laugh on her lips. Even with the acknowledgement of their situation, it seemed like it stopped at acknowledging that things had indeed happened, stopping short of taking them seriously.

Calandra begins gently murmuring to herself in Italian as she searches, just something under her breath to keep her focused, awake in the mind. To keep the constant music from drowning out her perfect crystal memories and plots and plansâŚ.
Finally, she was sat down, and even though the world was still spinning nauseatingly, she did feel somewhat better with a solid surface and no risk of falling if she lost her balance. She gripped the seat underneath her. It would all be alright once she got accustomed to the music, she knew that, or at least it would be easier, but for now she was grateful that there was someone willing to help her. Kohana did feel somewhat embarrassed - she hated losing her composure, especially in public and especially in such a drastic way - but there was nothing that could be done.
She could see the other girl sitting across from her, searching for something. What was her name? It began with a C, a hard C. It was Italian. Claudia? No, no, it wasnât like that, it was more uncommon.
âKohana.â She replied, voice slightly stronger now. âWakahisa Kohana, but just Kohana is fine.â She placed both of her hands on the table. It was easier to lean on that. âIâll be fine, itâs just - itâs just the music, I donât deal well with chaos. Iâll be fine once Iâm used to it.â
She remembered everyone elseâs expressions. They were concerned about something the Fool had said. What had they said? Sheâd hardly been listening, had been trying too hard to hold it all together. Why hadnât the music stopped yet?
âWhat was the announcement? Iâm afraid I wasnât listening. Was it bad?â
Ah, chaos, that most dreaded and hated of foes. Disorder is the death of the self, death of humanity and meaninh. Calandra's face of pained sympathy is an easy face for her to wear, it is close to the truth, only barely cultivated for an intentional probing of Kohana's empathy. "I understand, Kohana-chan. I am Calandra, Calandra Jeggare. First-last." The expressions of the others, pained and worried, concerned and (in a few cases) apathetic. Let us see what face Kohana makes. "Oh? The announcement? The clown made idle threats towards our families, certainly nothing to worry about... oh well, maybe for you it's worrisome. My Family is certainly beyond the clown..." How DOES she make the "F" sound capitalized?

shslclassicist:
Kohana had apparently managed to latch onto one of the shortest people in all of Cliffside, and when she summoned the determination to open her eyes she saw the tattoos and realised she may have accidentally clung onto one of Cliffsideâs most objectively dangerous residents. She remembered everyone in her class whispering about the new student, the mafia one. Thereâd been something of an uproar about it, after all.
Still, beggars couldnât be choosers, and anyone who would help her sit down while her world was spinning was an acceptable ally in this situation. She offered as close to a smile as she could muster. Kohana hated these situations, the only times when losing her composure was inevitable. She didnât feel at all like herself. But even having someone solid and unmoving to grab onto made it all feel slightly less disorientating, and so she was grateful.
âThank you. I - Iâm not good with - loud noise. I get dizzy. Iâll be alright when Iâve sat down and gotten used to it, but itâs justâŚâ
She trailed off. There was no point in going into an in depth explanation now. There would be time enough for that later, and time to find out exactly what the Foolâs announcement had all been about. For now, there were more pertinent matters at hand.
âMy books - theyâre by the picnic tables, so if you could help me please.â She closed her eyes again when the music gave another jaunty lurch - polka, really? - and she felt her balance fail her again. Still, even if they were said through gritted teeth, she knew better than to neglect pleasantries. Â âThank you.â

âDâaaaaaaw~ Heâs adorable!â Secretly Monoko was a bit salty that she didnât get to pet the duck before he waddled away, but⌠maybe heâd be back? He seemed fairly calm around humans⌠He might stick around if people keep feeding him.â Monoko laughed, grabbing the little pudge she had. âThen I should be a knight before you know it!â She joked before turning her attention to Callie once more.
A part of Monoko wanted to offer Calandra a part as a cast member at Monoworld. Sheâd be a natural for Monokuma, but⌠Monoko feared she wouldnât be able to filter her language and content around the kiddos, and got the feeling asking her to do so would be taken as an insult⌠After all, this was apparently her religion, which she seemed to take rather seriously. Monomi tilted her head a bit in confusion. âSpinning bodies?â She shook the thought from her head. âRegardless, itâs nice to meet you Jeggare-san!
When Callie said the dreaded âD-wordâ, Monoko slipped. âLanguage, please.â She almost immediately placed a hand over her maskâs mouth. âEr⌠Sorry, habit. Used to working around kids.â She nodded. âBut it sounded like a quality recording! They did a real good job!â She was silent a moment before speaking again. âSo who were you praying for? Your daddy?â Yes, best to avoid mention of the whole praying to destroy her foes thing.
Rosa bowed her head to greet the other, and glanced after the duck friend. He was long gone now, but smiled.
âWell he already likes me, and heâs a fan of Magnus-kun! Sir Waddlefoot seems pretty comfortable around us. We can go meet him sometime. See if the little knight is playing nice with the other ducks.â
âA consigliereâŚ? Forgive me for asking, but that would be⌠a Mafia thing right? An adviser?â
Well, she supposes all her jokes can't be winners. She thought 'spinning in your grave' was obvious... maybe it wasn't. Was she losing her edge from this fucking music, work of the Enemy and the Archenemy? Or like, whatever. Its so hard to THINK.
"...Devil its weird hearing people who aren't me calling him daddy. But no, I wasn't praying for him. I was praying for all of us. The Enemy above has such a tendancy to abandon people to their fates to test them... His Infernal Majesty is a bit more willing to listen and assist~"
There's a sudden chill as the chanting ends, and even the polka seems muffled. What a killing-aura Calandra can manage, almost as if her tattoos were penned in crimson, not black, and dripped...
"And if my daddy does hear my prayer, he'll come get me, and I can have our soldiers paint the dammed walls with that Fool's brains. Bang bang~ Just like that....~"
And then she snaps back to herself, smiling sweetly to Monomi and Rosa. This is the way of the Jeggare, to be the devil in plain sight.
And always, always, people come to the Devil and let it take their souls away. Because you always need a Devil.
"Yes yes dear Rosa, that's a mafia thing. The Consiglier is the voice of the Soldato, the soldiers; is the one who advises the Don. I organize things, I help out... its busy busy work! I hate being away from it so much.... ugh..."
She shakes her head, trying to shake free of the influence of the music. It keeps making her lose composure. She keeps doing it. Her Queenly mask keeps cracking when she doesnât mean it too. It must just be the writthing music, it could have been worse... Could have been more loud or more droning or in any way more insidious sounding music....
âLet me just play the chants some more... they should help me focus....â

fortunespeak:
Prior to the obnoxious interruption of the polka music, Kohana was quite peacefully sitting at one of the picnic tables, happily scribbling away at a translation. Although she was in no way content to spend the rest of her life in Cliffside, she could admit that being there had done wonders for her productivity. Metamorphoses book three was now done and dusted, dragons, flower transformations, filicides and all, and she was instead now translating the admittedly less exciting tale of Pyramus and Thisbe. She could do with a break, with switching to something more exciting.
Abrupt, loud polka music was not what she had in mind.
The immediate effect on her was drastic, and before she knew it all her pens, her books, her translation work had all been swept to the floor. She froze, gripping the edge of the table, eyes screwed shut.
This wasnât an accident, she knew, and to that end she got to her feet and made her way, slowly, to the main stage, not even taking time to pick her books up off the floor. She was vaguely aware that the Fool was saying something, and she could see that the other students were distressed by it, and she guessed sheâd have to find out what had been said later, but the music - the music - wormed its way into her mind and proceeded to flail about in there, scrambling her thoughts. Of all the things that could have happened, this had to be it. Couldnât they have just been kidnapped normally, and not by some polka music fiend?
Soon, most of the students had dispersed, but the music continued, just as loud and as excruciating as before. She felt seasick, genuinely, and once again screwed her eyes shut to try and re-balance herself. But it was no use. The music was simply too loud, too jaunty, and even though in time she was sure sheâd get used to it at the moment she wished sheâd never left that picnic bench. Although Kohana made it her primary objective to remain composed and ultimately inconspicuous at all times, she reached out a hand and blindly fumbled until she grabbed someoneâs arm.
âI need to - Iâm sorry, this is rude of me - but - can you help me - I need to sit down, I feel - I just need to sit down-â
Its infuriating, the music, the arrogance. But that has been stated of the Fool. Did you think it was about Calandra? So sorry. Its not. She is focused, a terror. She means to make to the church but...
Ah, sweet suffering, look, a dear fellow student, crawling in the muck, blindly grabbing at Calandra's scrawl-covered arms. It makes her stomach twist, slightly. Only slightly. Anger shouldn't be directed towards potential allies, only towards foes.
Let the sweetness come through, for a beggar given meals is a man enslaved through chains of debt.
"Its alright dear, here, let me help you. Up we go!"
Calandra, not that she'd let anyone know outwardly, began to curse herself. Hauling others to their feet was not a strong suit of hers. But help and haul she did, even if it... it took a bit longer than it should have. It isnât Calandraâs fault sheâs small. Its fucking genetics, alright? And it isnât her fault she only goes to the gym every... we... every two weeks... She has a busy schedule
"There, just hold onto me, I'll get you to the picnic tables, okay?"
A slave bound in chains of debt is more loyal than one bound in chains of iron. People will do anything if they think youâre kind, think they owe you. Theyâll sell you their soul, for nothing at all.
Say, can you see the cross? Inverted solemnly... | Calandra | Motive Reaction
Monoko managed to make it through the whole prayer, not wanting to stop and potentially offend, but⌠Yikes. Once it got to the whole striking down enemies, and letting them drown in blood bit, she started getting a little uncomfortable with what she was saying. It wasnât a problem that that was Calandraâs thing, but⌠That wasnât something Monomi should say⌠If she were in her Monokuma costume, MAYBE, but⌠heâs still a childrenâs character.
âIâm Monoko Mioda! But you can call me Monomi if you like! I was the SHSL Theme Park Mascot back in my day. Itâs nice ta meet you missâŚâ She hung her head. âIâm sorry⌠I donât think I remember your name.â
Rosa seemed to be praying herself⌠but not saying the words, since she felt rude to act as if she was a part of it. She would respect Calandra though. When she turned to the two of them, Rosa found herself actually going to pet Sir Waddlefoot and getting him a bit a lettuce. The duck happily ate it before waddling away. Goodbye Sir Waddlefoot Quack-A-Lot!
With a smile, she straightened up to the other two, mostly speaking to Calandra for her own greeting.
âRosa Join, from the most recently graduated Hopeâs Peak Academy Class. Um⌠I was the Super High School Level Childrenâs Book Author.â
âAnd that duck is my friend. Sir Waddlefoot Quack-A-Lot! Although I guess heâs had enough for now since heâs wandered off. Probably back to the pond! He is super cute, and friendly. And very, very greedy! But to be a knight, you must eat lots and become big and strong!â
Look how happy she is about a duck.
How sweet a smile the two girls get from their Satanic aquaintence! Its like honey, dripping thick and perfect and golden as her eyes. But honey is easy to poison, you know? The sweet hides a lot. It hides so so so much.
"My name is Calandra Jeggare, I'm the SHSL Consigliere, it truly is a pealsure to meet you Monomi-chan and Rosa-chan and the... leaving Conquering Hero, our dear Duck Knight hem hem hem~"
Calandra waves to the duck as it leaves, she can't help but imagine a crusader with a Donald duck face.... deus vult, dear Sir Waddlesfoot... What a thought indeed, but now let her attention fall on the humans. Both so cute! Nauseatingly pink and a tyke. How strange. A mascot and an author.
"I am Calandra Jeggare, the SHSL Consigliere. It's a pleasure to meet you both. Or well I suppose, I was such a thing. Now I'm just my father's Consigliere. Oh well~ Thank you for joining my prayers, I hope these musicians are dead, so we can harness their spinning bodies to power the world..."
She sighs and taps her feet, going tip tap tap. Thinking and pondering and trying to block out the fucking music.
"Ugh, I'll have to find a damn speaker system for my chants to drown this all out, and the choir worked so hard on it..."

âHiya Roomie-chan!â Monoko welcomed the new arrival. Hopefully they didnât mind the unimaginative nickname. Rosa seemed concerned about the words to the prayer, which placed Monoko in a bit of a tricky situation. If it would offend her for Monoko to participate, then she shouldnât, but that would likely offend Calandra⌠One appeared to be in more need of her brand of help than the other. âOoh~ I know a little bit of English. That would help a lot! Thank you.â
She turned briefly to Rosa. âIâm going to join her. You donât have to though, okay?â She didnât want to put Rosa in TOO awkward of a situation though, and was trying to give her a way out.
âSounds like a good idea to me!â She didnât necessarily buy into it herself, but⌠She knew that prayer could be incredibly important to people, and saw no reason not to show Calandra some solidarity. The mascot glanced to her new acquaintance periodically throughout the prayer, doing her best to keep up, and copy Calandraâs posture and body language. She assumed she wouldnât be doing anything disrespectful to her religion, and found it best just to copy her. The Consigliere would note that there was NO hesitation whatsoever.
Rosa greeted Monoko in return, holding the duck to her chest. After a moment, she put down the duck, offering him some lettuce that she had become accustomed to carrying with her for her friend - who wasnât always with her, but she was a little sad about everything.
She did show a moment of surprise as she recognised the words in English entirely. She ended up speaking in English as a follow-up. Her English wasnât bad by any means, just spoken with an accent - Japanese of course.
â[Satanism? Oh. I have to say Iâm a little surprised.]â
The surprise was quickly followed with a smile though.
â[Um, maybe not right now, but Iâd love to have a chat with you about it. Iâm aware of it, evidently, but I donât know much about it.]â
Rosa did join in though, she didnât copy the words, but she was somewhat praying herself.
What fun responses. A willing sheep and a nervous little one. What fun, what fun~ Let the prayers continue, backed by the droning chants coming off Calandraâs phone. The earthy scent of patchouli filling the air as the Devilâs own daughter lights the incense.
With theatrical flair, her voice rings clear and the prayer continues
"[Strike down our foes and make ready thy fires. For we forgive nothing and forget less. Our foes will drown in the boiling blood or be cast into the Pit. Forever in your service on Earth and In Hell]â
With a dramatic CLAPÂ and a twirl of her heels, the prayer ends and Calandra faces her fellows. Backlight by candles and surrounded by strange-smelling smokes, she certainly cuts a figure, doesnât she? Look at her skin, darling ones, look and see.Â
â[nemA]â
And behold. The Mark of the Beast upon her breast, the claws and sigils and strangeness all across her flesh.
With narrowed eyes and a wicked smile, Calandra Jeggare feels oh so at home.
She feels in control.
âNow my friends, what ARE your names, hrm? Iâm ever so dreadfully curious, and it feels just rude to not know a thing about you yet~ Why, Iâd be hung from the gallows for my rudeness had I broken bread with you and not known your names.â

Being suddenly assaulted by loud polka music was⌠nothing new to Monoko. Working in a theme park for your entire adult life made you surprisingly tolerant of that kind of âmusicâ. It almost made her feel at home. She could deal with this no problem. However, when the fool appears, and claims to be bored of them? Pardon? Werenât they the guests of this place? As the host it was the Foolâs job to entertain them, not the other way around. To be frank the Fool had done a terrible job of that, but luckily her classmates were more than interesting enough to give her limitless amounts of fun.
The fool kept talking, and her heart sank. Did he just⌠threaten her family? This⌠was completely out of bounds. This was supposed to be a relaxing experience, a getaway. The whole âyouâre locked in here foreverâ thing was a hamhanded touch, but⌠Monoko could see where that could be a fun thing to play with⌠It was never real though⌠Now if they were threatening her sister⌠âThis⌠This is wrong⌠A-and illegal! You didnât get anything signed saying you could hold us against our will. We can just walk out of here andâŚâ her voice trailed off.
She hopped in front of the other students. âItâs okay everybunny! Nooneâs going to hurt your families or friends. This is all just a joke⌠a really BAD joke. Everything will be fine, so⌠Just enjoy the music I guess?â
She was trying to reduce panic if there were to be any. She noted one of her classmates heading off towards the chapel, and took chase, watching from the doorway as they⌠turned all the crosses upside down? That was⌠interesting? Were they a follower of Saint Peter? She hoped no one would find it disrespectful⌠She personally didnât care too much either way. She was a judgement free zone. Even so, something about the chanting was a bit off. Still she approached the tattooed woman slowly. Not out of timidity, but out of respect, and not wanting to interrupt her. âHeya!â She finally spoke once she was practically beside her. If she were praying this hard, this must be a hard time for her, right? Monoko had found that offering to pray with park guests usually resulted in a positive experience for them so⌠âMind if I join you? I donât know the words, butâŚâ
Meanwhile Rosa had walked off quickly. She was a bit worried, but there was no need to panic. Level head. Thatâs what she needed. While Monoko had arrived pretty soon, Rosa was a little later, standing at the door⌠holding a duck? A stuffed duck or⌠nope. Thatâs Sir Waddlefoot Quack-A-Lot. Her friend!
Just what was going on? Her eyes glanced over the room, taking in the crosses that had been turned upside down, and then turning her attention to Calandra and Monoko. So her roommate was also here?
While Rosa didnât know Latin, she did know English and if one has studied English, you can sometimes work out words.
âHm⌠Father and Hell?â
That was about it that Rosa picked up but it gave her an idea. There was only a few guesses, but she didnât want to assume. She bounced up behind Monoko, before reeling in her curious excitement and petted the duck in her arms.
âPerhaps you should know what the words mean first. Something about Father and Hell right?â
Ah, there are guests now. An audience perhaps? Certainly not Faithful. Or maybe they are. But even the faithful aren't as loved by Him Below as a Jeggare. And neither of them have the proper look of a Jeggare. Plus, she'd have recognized family from sight.
...probably by voice for the first of them. The stranger was. A mascot? Calandra would never understand the Japanese obession with mascots. Not every store needed one. They were for sports teams and amusement parks, not grocery chains and electronic stores. They were asking to join at least, which was nice of them. She would turn down her chanting, letting the polka through just a bit to speak...
Where she not sort of interrupted by the other one, with a duck. She's so small... smaller than Calandra herself. But she also seems to know enough to recognize a few words. Calandra smiles sweetly at her, and begins properly
"I can start again, in English if that helps you both? I don't mind terribly if you join me in prayer. I'm just trying to... center myself a bit. And the chapel is a good place to start on that, don't you agree?"
"[Our Father, who art in Hell, unhallowed be thy name. Cursed are the sons and daughters of thy nemesis, who art to blame...]"
She watches their faces, or at least watches Rosaâs face. For Monoko she merely pays attention to body language. How troublesome their outfit is. But Calandra pays attention. She wants to know how they react. If they understand. Thereâs no malice to it, of course. Thatâs merely how she is.
To know every angle is to know every method of control. To control is to rule the world.
Say, can you see the cross? Inverted solemnly... | Calandra | Motive Reaction
Oh by all the Evils in the Pit and the Fires of the Deep. A clown is going to be murdered. The music is unacceptable. It interrupted her reading. Not that she has anything good to read. Just a mystery novel from a station. That sheâd solved by page 50. God. Even boredom would be better than this garbage.
And then the Fool is there, with a varity of comedy props, like some kind of asshole. Oh wait, exactly kind of the asshole the Fool obviously is. And it thinks it has the right to rant at them? The Fool kidnapped them. And⌠it wants them to entertain it?
By all the devils in hell. Its stupider than she thought.
But that wonât make getting out any easier. Not when it starts demanding corpses. Demanding death.
Fuck this, holy shit. Calandra, dear girl, just abjectly refuses to play along with it. It threatens her family? How can something like it be a threat to them? How can whatever masters it serves hope to destroy the Jeggare, where Kings and God have failed to do so again and again, since the ancient times.
What a thing it is, what a Fool.
Devil help her, she needs something to help herâŚ
And sheâll help herself. Sheâll head to the chapel, reverse every cross she can find. And pull up something on her phone. A bit of music. Music here of course means⌠well. Latin chants. Recorded from her familyâs personal chapel. A nice reminder of home. Of the proper way of things. Of worship.
She remembers the words at least, for the first of the prayers as she lights the candles and incense dug from behind the altar.
â<Our Father who art in Hell, unhallowed be thy nameâŚ>â

shsl-taxidermy:
He felt now that his duty was to watch. She told him to hush, so hush he did. A curious form of comfort came from taking commands from someone under the guise of helping. Since his uncle had died, the only person ordering him around had been his friend Aikoânot the gravedigger, mindâand all of her commands had been clearly for his own benefit. So he resisted. But falling in line, like heâd done before he was famous, felt comfortable.
He watched her pull out her tablet, and his fingers itched to reach for his own, but he watched her instead. A solution was there, he felt, in her face. Her eyes sought answers, and they seemed to find the beginnings of one.
I just need to let him know, she said. Cell signal was kaput, he didnât need to tell her that, so a way to let her father know what was going on seemed like a challenge. He touched his face thoughtfully, sighing as he considered possibilities.
âThe Fool didnât seem like they wanted us to suffer,â he said quietly. Itâs possible she may not have heard him. He looked to her, his smile curiously absent from his face, and spoke again. âIf weâre not meant to suffer, then thereâs a possibility theyâre willing to do favors for us. Our phones are useless, butâŚâ
He gestured vaguely to their surroundings. He meant to indicate the decorâthe medieval theme to the locationâbut it was a pretty generic gesture.
âWriting a letter to daddy dearest to assure him youâre okayââ If his eyes ever appeared to open, this would have been a good time to wink. âMight suit our captor. Theyâll be looking for you anyway, so a charming letter from camp might go under The Foolâs radar.â
He paused. âMight have to wait a few days, though. So itâs not obvious. Plus a letter going to your home country might be a while. Itâs not foolproof.â
Calandra is focused, she is coming back to herself. Plans are forming. Are there plans within plans? No of course not. Only an idiot trips themselves up like that. A situation like this calls for multiple avenues of attack and maximum trust between conspirators. How loathsome that she must rely on the charity of strangers...
Or. Well. Near strangers.
Her voice is a whisper as she speaks next, for secrecy is the cloak and her words the dagger.
"I'm supposed to call in every day, a letter is out of the ordinary enough to get him into a fury... but the clown might know that."
She stands and sort of... well she sort of leans against Tsubasa and his chair. A sign of mental exhaustion, yes. A calculated bit of intimacy to make him trust her, yes. A sincere sign of her slight affection for her friend? Yet again, the answer is yes.
"Don't ever refer to my father as daddy again, its so weird, Tsubasa-san. I only call him that in private and you ought to never say it."
A heavy sigh, the rising and falling of her ruffled front, like fluttering shadows in the corner of the eye.
âAt least given where we are, I can practice my illuminated script. Or my calligraphy. I shall have to pluck a goose for writing pencils and wring ink from the stones of the well, or some other fairy-tale bullshit.â
Tsubasa is so... useful. Â So attentive. So obedient. He fell in line so perfectly. And his advice was reasonably well thought out, in line with the themeatics of the Fool and its... stupid mystery bullshit. How... comforting? To have a useful friend, a good tool in him.
She'll have to see that he stays close. For his own good, of course.
Calandra will spend but a single coin. Prudence is required, the coins might have later uses to her.
The crone awakens with a long mechanic groan and straightens up painfully slow. She stares at Calandra for a few moments, void of emotion as a machine is. She doesnât even open her mouth to speak and, after a few seconds, she slumps back to her slumbering state.
An item and a paper fall out of the machine.
Calandra received:
Red Asphalt: A driverâs education film depicting a number of graphic car crashes.
The paper reads:
âGuns donât kill people. People kill people.â
