Hitomi’s strange trance was broken the moment she felt someone walk up right behind her and begin speaking. She jumped slightly, but tried to play it off as if she hadn’t. The hair on her neck stood on end as she carefully turned her head to see where the voice was coming from.
It was another student. A bright smile formed on her face as she lifted her card, looking at the other. She then, without a word moved her hand to use her card three times, completely disregarding the purple-haired girl’s words of warning. As the items were making their way, she turned back to face the machine, crossing her arms again.
“Well then, it still won’t hurt to see what I get. Not like these token things can be used for anything else, right?”
She turned again, moving away a bit so the girl wasn’t standing directly behind her, but instead, next to her. There was some hesitation in her face, but eventually Hitomi put her id in her back pocket and then put her hands by her side. She bowed slightly and smiled politely.
“My name’s Hitomi Kamiya, and you are…? Other than disappointed in your items, I mean,”
She put a fist to her mouth and smiled a bit at her own joke. Finally, she saw the items come out of the machine. Hitomi began reaching for the first item until she realized that it was….alive?
With a deadpan expression, Hitomi watched the fish flop out of the machine. She stared at it for a few seconds, then turned to Manami, then looked back at the fish. What was going on here.
Confusion washed over her features as she tried to understand the situation. Luckily, her second item came out soon after. This time, she picked up the aloe plant and held it up to the light to see it better. She put the plant down on the ground next to her, away from the flopping fish, and waited for her last item.
“I’m not touching the fish.”
As if to ease the awkward tension in the air, she gave a breathy laugh and looked towards Manami at the fish comment.
When she saw the album come out of the machine, the first thing that she prayed for was that it’d be empty. She doesn’t mind making new memories- why not! They’re only here forever, after all. With careful hands she picked it up and opened it slowly.
Immediately, she slammed it shut and closed her eyes. Holding out the book to Manami’s chest, she cleared her throat with what sounded like annoyance.
“I think this is yours. I don’t want it.”
Opening her eyes slowly, she didn’t make eye contact, but after a few moments, she realized how harsh her tone was. Hitomi’s head turned ever so slightly and a small, somewhat fake-looking smile appeared on her face. Her eyes shifted back to the fish for a moment.
“Do you think I’ll get in trouble for leaving that fish there?”
The typist wasn't too upset that her advice went unheeded. Hitomi was gonna do what Hitomi was gonna do, after all, and it didn't make much of a difference to Manami whether she got some lame items or not. Plus, she did bring up a good point (though preferably Manami would opt for not using the tokens at all if it were for something pointless, but, y'know).
"I'm Manami Nemoto. It's nice to meet you, Kamiya-san."
Her introduction was dry as sandpaper in the desert, and she didn't seem to be visibly impressed by Hitomi's joke. She only shrugged when the fish came out, unsure what to offer as any kind of explanation. What expectations could one possibly have for a mysterious prize machine such as this? What reasoning could there be, other than for disappointment (just like she'd warned about).
The first sign of emotion in Manami during the conversation appeared when a big book was suddenly shoved towards her. What's this? Her's? She opened up the first few pages, and what had been confusion had now just turned into a great big smile!
"Big brother!! And dad too!!! Oh my goodness, thank you so, so much Kamiya-san! I'm so glad to have this, at least. Now I can’t ever forget the faces of my family! Oh, I don't know how I can repay you! Maybe I can take that gross, smelly, slimy fish for you too, if you don't want it? Please just let me know, I can't let something like this go un-returned!"
She paused for a moment, absolutely giddy. She flipped through a couple more pages, delighted at the memories pictured. It didn’t really register with her how much Hitomi didn’t seem interested in it. Instead, she just carried on, absolutely giddy.
"I was wrong about this whole machine...It's actually pretty flattering~! Someone went through all of the trouble to find such a personal item...And then they hid it away, to give it back as a gift! Isn't that the sweetest, Kamiya-san?"
Oh, how the tables have tabled in this interaction.
