i might be overthinking this only because i studied media in school and ive picked up how important lighting/ clothing symbolism is in scenes, so, idk heres an overanalysis of scenes in fellow travelers.
so first off, hawk is always wearing darker colours, with a tinge of white peaking through, wether that represents he’s hiding himself, the dark is like a vice/ he’s not showing its true self openly. he has a secret, he’s mysterious, cold. where as tim is usually in lighter shades, or white, which represents purity/ he’s more casual with it. more himself. but the second hawk smiles, light shines on him, because tim his light, in the darkness.
again, the differences, the lighting is even, but behind hawk, the tree?? the sun is mORE ON TIMS SIDE? the legs crossed, tims more relaxed.
hawks fully wearing black here, restricted by his family, where as tim is showing bare skin, openly himself?? again with the darkness behind hawk, the window behind tim with a white curtain.
now, the lightning is very similar to both of them here, it’s been years since they’ve seen each other but we both know what happens moments after, been yearning for so many years that they both want the same outcome. two sides, ying and yang. the light shining on the same side of their faces.
how tim’s more in the dark, he’s sick, hasn’t seen hawk in years as if now he’s the one losing himself, they’ve switched roles, hawk’s no longer wearing black, because he doesn’t have to hide it anymore, he’s in grey.
but now he’s tims light, it’s peaking by tims waist as he’s looking up at him.
