Lamento - White Notes

I’m going to cut to the chase with this one since it’s been so long since I originally tried working on it. Images in this post are from the half-size scans.

Lamento: White Notes is an art book made for the Lamento: Beyond the Void visual novel by Nitro+Chiral. The first third of the book contains concept art, character portrait illustrations, and sketches by Chinatsu Kurahana, while the rest is composed of short stories for each love interest character and interviews with various contributors to the game. It’s decently in-depth and has a similar format to other Japanese art books for video games and visual novels (actually reminds me a lot of Baten Kaitos’ art book specifically).

White Notes has some plot-relevant imagery so I’d advise those who don’t want to spoil themselves that this is probably a book to look at after playing the VN. Aside from that it’s fairly worksafe excusing a couple kissing/groping sketches.

For anyone unaware, the visual novel Lamento: Beyond the Void is a boy’s love story set in a fantasy setting with humanoid cat creatures called Ribika, along with monsters, devils, wizards, shamans and all sorts of interesting creatures. Even though it can be labeled as an adult game it contains a fairly large amount of world building and lore, and as many who have or haven’t played it may be aware of - a mind-blowingly good soundtrack. There is a planned english patch in the works and one of its translators has already done an excellent job on their own translating the text of character routes - which can be found here. I highly recommend checking it out.

HI I’ve been dying to talk about this lately because as much as i said I wanted a Aya arc (and I’m REALLY HAPPY) but.. it’s been a little disappointing

Tho i gotta admit i love that the author kept her fear of appearing “weak” even when they are dating, of course we dont want another miscommunication arc but I hope to see her overcome gradually instead of “ermm now that we are dating no problems happen at all”

Even so, and it could because the chapters are small, I feel we are missing the depth in Aya I was looking for.. we didnt got any insight on what goes on in her mind. And now we are kinda rushing for a “aya finds “me to her” and wow” plot and thats such a missed opportunity to explore aya’s character .. not because it cant happen later but because this would be a perfect timing, at least that’s how i see it.

Well a lot can happen before Aya actually finds “me to her” and even tho i complain a lot I’m happy with where the story is going!!

new chapter spoilers!!

one thing that has deeply bothered me throughout the whole story was the lack of depth in Aya's character, as much as I love her, I fear her growth revolves mostly around Mitsuki even tho aya definitely can have an arc of her own ... on the other hand mitsuki had A LOT of growth and development, she has dreams of her own and is actually aiming towards them,,

for this reason, it bothered me a bit that Aya went to English literature when she has shown multiple times throughout the story that she doesn't understand english, but she did show interest in learning it!! So it didn't come off as a shock until she said this..

It's cute and all but when I tell u my smile dropped...

Either way, in the last chapter really gave me high hopes of more AYA in the next characters!! Which I hope to see!!

I've seen people wonder if she could be afraid of being left behind by mitsuki as she has much bigger dreams and even though I think that does have a play in this I hope they AT LEAST focus on aya :(
