kenma hasn’t even realized that kuroo’s caught onto his not-so-small crush on you. in all honesty, it’s hard for anyone not to notice. the way kenma stares at you and zones out while you speak, how he turns bright red at the slightest bit of physical contact – it all points straight to his feelings for you.
while kenma and kuroo walk home from volleyball practice, kuroo nudges his shoulder. “so, when are you telling her?”
“telling who what?” kenma responds, barely looking up from his phone. though his brows furrow, already irritated by kuroo’s so-called nonsense.
“telling y/n that you like her.”
“what? i– i don’t like y/n.”
kuroo lets out a cackle, clearly amused by kenma’s denial. “it’s so obvious! you two are practically glued at the hip. i saw you at lunch yesterday — sharing earbuds and playing on your phone together. not exactly subtle, man.”
kenma’s cheeks flush with embarrassment. he never considered that kuroo would notice — but now that he has, he knows his plan to never confess has officially gone down the drain.
kuroo, on the other hand, doesn’t plan to shout it from the rooftops. he’s actually glad kenma’s found someone. someone who probably feels the same. maybe you’ll be the one to finally tear kenma away from his endless gaming sessions, since he clearly doesn’t listen to kuroo.
the following evening, kuroo hunts you down after school. he finds you in the library, nose buried in your notebook, glancing at your laptop every few minutes.
you’re just trying to study for that quiz on friday when the chair beside you scrapes back, and kuroo plops himself down. “hey,” he greets casually. “watcha studying?”
“trigonometry,” you answer curtly — not trying to sound rude, but too focused to care about your tone.
he hums, nodding thoughtfully like he has any idea what that means. there’s that look in his eyes — the one that says he’s thinking hard about something. after a moment, he leans forward, resting his elbows on the table and lowering his voice. “y’know, kenma likes you.”
“what?” you blink, completely thrown off.
“yeah. pretends he doesn’t, but he does. your notifications are the only ones he hasn’t muted. and he keeps smiling at his damn phone all the time. it’s silly.”
the only thing you can do is laugh awkwardly, the reality of it slowly sinking in. “what should i do with this information?” you ask.
“up to you,” kuroo shrugs. “maybe tell him yourself. or don’t. but if you’re gonna like him back, do us both a favor and put him out of his misery, yeah?”
even after kuroo leaves, you can’t focus on studying. your mind keeps circling back to kenma — quiet, awkward, careful kenma. you’d always thought he didn’t like you that way. that you were just the friend he played video games with when he was bored.
you find him outside after practice, hair still a little damp, bag slung over his shoulder.
“hey, kenma,” you call.
his head snaps up from his phone at the sound of your voice. it’s instant — the way you capture his attention.
“hi,” he says softly, tucking a strand of hair behind his ear. his voice is calm, but his mind’s spinning.
you clear your throat, nerves buzzing. “would you… wanna go out? tomorrow, or later this week — whenever you’re free—”
you’re rambling. fumbling over your words. but before you can apologize, kenma’s already looking at you with wide, stunned eyes.
“y–yeah. that sounds good.” he pauses, the faintest smile tugging at his lips. “we could go… right now, if you want.”
his voice is so quiet you almost miss it, but when your brain finally catches up to what he said, you can’t stop the grin that spreads across your face.
“right now sounds perfect,” you say.
for a heartbeat, neither of you moves. then kenma shifts his bag higher on his shoulder, steps closer, and holds his phone out toward you.
“you’ll have to pick the place,” he murmurs, cheeks pink. “i’ve never done this before.”
you laugh — soft and a little breathless. “don’t worry. i’ll handle it.”
and as you start walking side by side, your hands brushing just once, kenma can’t stop smiling.
behind you, somewhere in the distance, kuroo’s probably smirking to himself. but for once, kenma doesn’t care.
One month ago, you applied for an internship at one of the greatest high school in Tokyo. Now, there you are, waiting for the email that will arrive in five minutes. "Everything will be alright; calm down, you're too nervous," Kita said while drinking a cup of tea. You and Shinsuke were at his house.
Five minutes later, when the email arrived, you weren't feeling very brave, so you let Kita open it. "Accepted." You started to cry and immediately hugged him, giving him a sweet kiss on his lips.
A couple of days later, while you were packing your things, Shinsuke realized how tough it would be to let you go to study in a different region. They had talked about it before, and he wouldn't ask you to stay; instead, he would be by your side whenever you needed him.
The weeks passed, and Kita wasn't strong enough to go without seeing you. On the outside, he was completely calm, but inside, he was in chaos. Later on, he started to realize that you had become a habit to him; he was used to taking care of you, and now, he realized you weren't there.
He missed you, Atsumu and Osamu had seen him more distracted than usual. His lips were drying up because you weren't there, and he still made bento boxes full of food for you, but you weren't there. When you called him, he acted like he was okay, but he wasn't, he even called your name in the middle of class. That was when he knew he was ruined—ruined because of your smile, ruined because of your lips. Ruined because of you.
The winter holidays came fast for you, but for Kita, they felt like an entire century. You had finished your semester, which meant you were back at Inarizaki High School; Kita was so excited he was almost having a nervous breakdown.
