I'm a second year life sciences student, a dog mom (Tommy = loml) and a lover of biology.

I started this blog because my brain is 90% bio facts and 10% spiraling. And honestly, that needs an outlet.

Days 59–61

The past few days have been quite exhausting.

Day 59 was probably the hardest. I was feeling really sick, but I still managed to attend two classes and a seminar before coming home to rest. Looking back, I probably should've listened to my body a little sooner.

Day 60 was my Animal Physiology mid-semester practical exam. It went okayish, and after that I attended my French class and a Skill Development session before heading home to continue recovering.

Day 61 was my Angiosperm Systematics and Taxonomy practical exam. Honestly... it didn't go well. I'm just hoping I manage to pass. Once the exam was over, I decided not to dwell on it too much. I came home, went shopping with my mom, started preparing for my mid-semester theory exams, had noodles for dinner, and called it a night.

The past three days reminded me that not everything goes according to plan. Some exams feel good, some don't, and sometimes you're trying to get through it all while being unwell. All I can do now is focus on the next exam and keep moving forward.

Rating: 6.5/10

Improvement: Trust my preparation, take care of my health, and avoid overthinking exams once they're over.

could you maybe elaborate more on the phylogenetic trees sometime, it sounds very interesting :3

absolutely!! 🥹🫶 We only had an introduction to phylogenetic trees in class, but I already find them so fascinating. They're basically like family trees, except instead of showing how people are related, they show how different species are evolutionarily related based on their DNA and shared ancestors. I'll definitely make a post explaining them once I learn more. :)

Day 58/365

Today definitely didn't start the way I wanted.

I accidentally left my ID card at home and had to turn back to get it before heading to college. Thankfully, I still managed to attend my classes, but I wasn't feeling well. As the day went on, my cough got worse, and I started having chills and a fever, so I decided to head home early and get some rest.

After lunch, I went out with my mom for a while, but by then I was feeling even worse. The rest of the day was spent resting, taking it easy, and trying to recover. I didn't study at all, and honestly, that was okay.

Had a light dinner, took my medicines, and went to bed early, hoping to wake up feeling better tomorrow.

Rating: 5.5/10

Improvement: Listen to my body sooner and prioritize rest when I'm unwell.

Day 57/365

Today was a pretty normal day at college.

One of the most interesting parts of the day was learning about phylogenetic trees and how they're constructed using nucleotide sequences. It was something new, and I'm looking forward to learning more about it.

After coming home, I had lunch and went out with my mom for a while. Once we got back, I helped her with some chores, had dinner, took Tommy out for his evening walk, and finished my assignments before finally calling it a day.

A simple day, but a productive one.

Rating: 8/10

Improvement: Try to sleep a little earlier and stay consistent with my routine.

Day 56/365

Not the most productive Sunday, but definitely a refreshing one.

I went to my cousins' house for a much-needed break and got to meet everyone after months. It was really nice catching up, laughing together, and just spending quality time with family.

We reached home pretty late thanks to the traffic. After dinner, I downloaded the software needed for my classes and sat down to make a study plan for my mid-semester exams. It felt good to end the weekend with at least a little preparation for the week ahead.

Called it a day by sleeping early, ready for a fresh start tomorrow.

Rating: 9/10

Improvement: Follow the study plan I made instead of just making one.

Day 55/365

Today was a nice mix of learning and relaxing.

We had two hours of Python, where we learned about lists, tuples, keys, and a few other concepts that I'll definitely need to revise. In Angiosperm Systematics and Taxonomy, we finally started the systematics portion of the syllabus.

After classes, I watched a street play, got my laptop configured, and headed home. I had lunch, watched a movie with my mom, and later went for a walk at Lalbagh. It was a peaceful way to end the day.

After coming back, I had dinner, took Tommy downstairs for a walk, and spent the rest of the evening just relaxing. Since tomorrow's Sunday, I let myself stay up a little later than usual.

A calm and refreshing day overall.

Improvement: Revise today's Python concepts while they're still fresh in my mind.

How to Study Each Subject (Shwetha's Version™)

Disclaimer: I have absolutely no qualifications to give study advice. This is just how I somehow survive these subjects.

Animal Physiology

This subject is basically biology saying,

"Have you ever wondered how literally every organ in your body works?"

...and then proceeding to answer that question in 300 slides.

My method:

Read the chapter once without trying to memorize anything.

Accept that I understood approximately 20%.

Watch YouTube videos until someone explains it like I'm five.

Draw terrible diagrams that only I can understand.

Keep asking myself, "But why?" until the physiology actually starts making sense.

The best part is when everything suddenly connects.

The worst part is when the kidney shows up.

Principles of Forensic Science

This is less "studying" and more convincing myself I'm about to solve a murder case.

Every lecture has me thinking,

"Hmm... that's an interesting bloodstain pattern."

I love this subject because it feels like learning through stories rather than memorizing random notes.

The only downside is that now every crime show makes me go,

"Actually, that's not how evidence collection works."

AI in Biological Sciences

Every class starts with me feeling like a biology student.

Every class ends with me wondering if I accidentally enrolled in computer science.

The study process goes something like this:

attend class → google ten new terms → watch a video → google those words too → suddenly understand everything for exactly five minutes → forget everything again

Then the next topic starts.

Python

Python and I have a very interesting relationship.

I write code.

Python says there's an error.

I stare at the screen.

Python silently judges me.

Thirty minutes later, I realize I forgot a colon or an indentation or a bracket.

I correct it.

The code runs perfectly.

I hate it.

I love it.

We'll do this all over again next week.

Angiosperm Systematics & Taxonomy

This subject has personally humbled me.

Leaves.

Flowers.

Inflorescences.

Fruits.

Floral formulae.

Scientific names.

Taxonomy.

Families.

Everything looks easy until the exam paper arrives, and suddenly every leaf is just...

green.

My actual study technique is looking at real plants whenever possible because the diagrams and I are simply not on speaking terms.

Whoever decided there should be fifty different botanical terms... we need to talk.

Also, Carl Linnaeus… you're close enough. I just want to talk.

French

Attend class.

Think,

"Yeah, I got this."

The teacher asks me to solve questions.

I suddenly forget every French word I've ever learned (The only word I'll ever remember is Bonjour.)

Five minutes later, after class, I'm suddenly fluent again.

Merci, brain.

Also, special mention to lab classes.

Theory makes me think I understand the topic.

The practical reminds me that I absolutely do not.

Microscopes, floral formulae, stained slides, preparing solutions...

Humility is truly the greatest lesson these labs have taught me.

Final Thoughts

No two subjects deserve to be studied the same way.

Some need diagrams.

Some need YouTube.

Some need coffee.

Some need emotional support.

And some need me to stare out of the window for ten minutes before my brain agrees to cooperate.

Somehow...

I'm surviving second year.

I guess that's enough.

Day 54/365

Today was a pretty relaxed day at college since the syllabus for our mid-semester exams is finally complete. Most of the classes were spent finishing pending work.

In French, we continued learning verbs and also got the syllabus for our mid-sems. During lab, we studied two plants and wrote down their general and floral characters, which I genuinely enjoyed. It's nice when practicals make the theory feel more interesting.

After coming home, I had lunch, helped my mom with some chores, watched a few SWAYAM lectures, had dinner, took Tommy for a walk, and ended the day with an early night's sleep.

Nothing extraordinary today, but it felt like one of those calm, productive days that quietly pushes you forward.

Rating: 8/10

Improvement: Make better use of the extra free time by starting my mid-semester revision instead of waiting until the last minute.

Day 53/365

Today was a pretty good day.

Started the day with Animal Physiology lab, where we did an experiment to check the pH of saliva. It was really interesting, but it took a lot longer than I expected. After that, I had French class, where we learned about verbs, followed by a Skill Development session on growth mindset and professionalism. Definitely picked up a few useful things today.

Came home, had lunch, went shopping with my mom, and finally got around to finishing some incomplete record work. Had dinner, took Tommy for a walk, and called it a day with an early night's sleep.

Overall, a simple but productive day.

Rating: 8/10

Improvement: Finish my record work on time instead of letting it pile up.

You know what I find kind of symbolic? The fact that students are now using the National Anthem as a shield against the Police Violence. Like.. during Independence this very anthem was used to protest against the colonizers and then it became a sort of a pride symbol for every citizen and now the very anthem drafted for PROTESTING colonisation is being used as a shield...

Day 52/365

Today was a pretty normal college day. Classes went on as usual, and we had some really long breaks in between. We also had skit practice, which was fun and a nice change from lectures.

After coming home, I had lunch, but the rest of the day didn't really go as planned. I started feeling sick with stomach pain and wasn't feeling great overall, so I spent most of the evening taking it easy. Also, mom got a lot of snacks, but I couldn't relish them 😭.

I had a light dinner, took Tommy out for a walk, studied for a little while, and then just relaxed before going to bed.

Not the most productive day, but sometimes listening to your body is productive too.

Rating: 6.5/10

Improvement: Take better care of my health and not ignore the signs when my body needs rest.

Day 51/365

Today was a pretty normal college day.

Had classes as usual, and there was so much note-making that my hand is actually aching now. We also had skit practice for one of our assignments, which was honestly a nice break from just sitting in lectures.

After coming home, I had lunch, chilled for a while, worked out, and did a bit of my SWAYAM course. Had a really good dinner, took Tommy for a walk, and then made the mistake of opening Instagram.

My entire feed was filled with videos from the Jantar Mantar protests in New Delhi. Seeing so many students being hurt while peacefully protesting for our education genuinely broke my heart. I still can't stop thinking about it.

Ended the day by sleeping early.

Rating: 8/10

Improvement: Spend less time doomscrolling and more time being present.

It's heartbreaking to think that so many people stepped out hoping their voices would matter, only to end up getting hurt. Behind every protest is a person with dreams, a family waiting for them at home, and a reason they felt they couldn't stay silent anymore. No one deserves to pay that price just for asking to be heard.
