“When I’d been sad, I hurt myself. Amma hurt other people.”
SHARP OBJECTS (2018) dir. Jean-Marc Vallée
“ ‘ the woman in white is the only thing haunting this town. ’ ” baseless rumors ( were they? ) and fears formed from the phantasm of the fictitious. wind gap truly preyed upon the living and ate it from the inside out --- and amma was already so lucky to be hollow; to be aware of it, too. “ or at least, it’s all anyone will tell you if you ask. ‘cept nobody wants to talk. ” a dead town that thrives on the ghosts of gossip.
@gangled ♡’d for a starter .
hi, hello. while it’s true that amma is an abused child, it doesn’t change that she herself is an incredibly sick individual at heart.
she is a serial killer. she killed ann and natalie because they were threats. not only were they taking away the uncontested attention she received by adora, but she wanted to protect her mother from investigation in spite of being completely aware of her mother's abuse. in her own words, "they started asking me questions about being sick. they were going to ruin everything." not only that, but amma killed a cat with natalie and ann. amma killed lily similarly as she had to the two other girls, because camille was giving lily more attention than she did to amma.
she hadn’t batted a lash in accusing john keene of murdering the two girls (including his own sister), rallying the other youth against him and ridiculing him at every opportunity while knowing just how hurt, heartbroken, and vulnerable he must feel in struggling to cope with his sister’s death. she attended the funeral of her victims, saying how she “owed” it to them because they had been her friends, yet would deface and steal the offerings made in “paying respects” laid about town for these same girls. even after “ridding herself of her problems”, she’s unsatisfied and is entirely petulant regarding how this affects everyone in town (including her mother) and expresses childishly that she wishes she had been murdered. because if she was murdered, then she’d get the most attention and she’d be perfect and then her mama would keep thinking about her the most.
the girl’s as fucked up as they go.
FALLEN cherubim laughs in the face of a mad dog, porcelain veneer of her teeth glinting like moonlight before the headlights of his car, skates grumbling harsh over gravel with how amma throws her weight toward the vehicle. “ try’na make road kill out of me, willy? that’d actually give the girls somethin’ to talk about! ” her hands tap raucously upon the sapphire hood to the beat of bon jovi. nice tunes, billiam.
@heebiejeebies ♡’d for a starter .
i rly try not to spoil people and i know it’s not like everyone has read or watched sharp objects, and as much as i love how well planned and foreshadowed the reveal is, i don’t think i can have fun with writing amma if i’m holding back at all re: her role in the series, so this blog will not spoiler-free friendly at all!
another update! i’m going to base amma off of both the show & novel, but novel-based more prominently. i do love eliza scanlen as amma so i’ll stick with her as a faceclaim, but amma being thirteen during the events of sharp objects is important to the huge bag of EUGH surrounding wind gap --- i get why they aged her up for the show ( + jumping from 13 -> 15 isn’t much of a gap, since she’s still a kid ) but there’s a lot of factors that make for the reader’s discomfort ( or at least to provide some discourse and mixed feelings ) as they are presented in the novel that i think should be considered. a lot about amma is controversial, should be discussed, and be treated with nuance, just like any other.
also blows a kiss to @heebiejeebies for the beautiful crown made for our feral persephone proxy ♡♡♡♡♡♡

“ i guess it’s just part of growing up . ”
“ HOW’D feel to have flown the coop, then? ” it’s a bold question to ask, she’s sure, but he’s got grit on display. sands of time haven’t washed all those wounds away, looks like, and amma is nothing but fearless to poke and prod and peel at the scabs. takes after her mama in that regard. “ feels like i can’t go too far from home. even if i want to. so makes me ... stir crazy. ”
jackie - off jill / dncingquccn :
pretty hazel eyes, blinking once, twice, then three times, using this tactic to get whatever she wanted. ❝ oh come on, ❞ she finally said, rolling her eyes now, giving up on that act and now onto the next. ❝ i’m jackie burkhart. do you know who i am ? most people would bend over backwards just to be in the same room as me. ❞
ARE all jackie’s such loudmouths? amma sucks in her cheeks, transformed sallow where baby fat once reigned, before releasing with a hollow pucker, lips blowpop pink, and she rubs the side of its shiny candy globe across her lips to smear it more than opaque. the gloaming of baby blues are swallowed by the pitch black of her pupils; promising both disaster and the ecstasy amma wrings from it.
“ uh - huh. you the butterball princess or what? ” money recognizes money, of course, the hungry, green-eyed monster that demands and never begs being born from it. they have each of their own, like familiars ------ amma recognizes it, but she’ll give jackie burkhart none of it.
hush little mama don't you cry baby's gonna play with fire

Am I good at caring for Amma because of kindness, or do I like caring for Amma because I have Adora’s sickness? I waver between the two. Especially at night, when my skin begins to pulse. Lately, I’ve been leaning toward kindness.
