In Greek mythology, Hestia is the virgin goddess of the hearth and home. The first born of Rhea and Cronus, she was the first swallowed by Cronus when he grew fearful that one of his children would dethrone him. After Zeus forced his father to disgorge his children, Hestia was the last to be yielded up, making her both the eldest and the youngest child.

As the goddess of the hearth she personified the fire burning in the hearth of every home in Greece. Hestia receiving the first offering at every sacrifice in the household with families pouring sweet wine in her name and dedicating the richest portion of food to her. Though Hestia did not have a public cult, she was worshipped at any temple, regardless of the god the temple was dedicated to.

A Prayer to Brighid

Oh Great Brighid,

I am your ingot of iron,

and you are my smith.

What will you forge me into?

Will I be a spear, so that I may pierce darkness?

I am iron  and you will forge me into hard steel.

Old Persian Mother Goddess Anahit (Armenian: Անահիտ, Aredvi Sura Anahita ~ Arədvī Sūrā Anāhitā) the Avestan language name of an Indo-Iranian cosmological goddess venerated as the divinity of ‘the Waters’ (Aban) and hence associated with fertility, healing and wisdom in Armenian mythology. In early periods she was also the goddess of war. By the 5th century BC she was the main deity in Armenia along with Aramazd.

Goddess Durga is the mother of the universe and believed to be the power behind the work of creation, preservation, and destruction of the world. Since time immemorial she has been worshiped as the supreme power of the Supreme Being and has been mentioned in many scriptures.

Durga…(Sanskrit: दुर्गा Durgā “Invincible”) is the principle form of the Goddess, also known as Devi and Shakti in Hinduism. Durga the form and formless, is the root cause of creation, preservation and annihilation. According to legend, Durga (Parvati) Manifested herself for the slaying of the buffalo demon Mahisasura from Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and the lesser gods, who were otherwise powerless to overcome him. She is pure Shakti, having manifested herself within the gods so that she may fulfill the tasks of the universe via them.

The lion represents power, will and determination.  Mother Durga riding the lion symbolizes her mastery over all these qualities. This suggests to the devotee that one has to possess all these qualities to get over the demon of ego.
