SARAH MY BELOVED
so in case anybody has wondering why i haven’t been interacting with newsies posts or posting about newsies, is because i’m so tired of the way some of the fandom completely erases the women of the story from it. well, that’s sort of part of it.
and it’s exhausting trying to remind people to do so. i feel like this is my hundredth post asking this. the fandom gives complete personalities to an ensemble member who speaks at least once. i appreciate that we appreciate the ensemble, they work hard to make the show come together.
however, in such a male heavy show, shouldn’t we be spotlighting the women in it? medda, hannah, ester, sarah and katherine are all such incredible people and they’re such empowering characters.
medda acts as a maternal figure for the boys, and is so supportive of the boys as opposed to the other adults in the show.
hannah first spoke up to pulitzer about the mistreatment of the newsies, and later does it at the end of the show.
ester is so caring towards her children and jack, like medda is to the newsies.
sarah shows that you can still show interest in the color pink, yet still slug a guy in the face. and that there’s bravery in being “soft.”
katherine helps the newsies speak out, and without her, how would the rest of the city really know what was going on? all whilst standing up for herself too.
i don’t care if you don’t ship sarah or jack with any of these characters, that gives no excuse to ignore them, and make them seem like the ensemble.
there’s such depth to these characters. and all i’m just simply going to request is for you not to forget these girls, because they don’t deserve to be erased from history.
reminder that this blog, while not politically focused, supports BLM. bootlickers and racists aren’t welcome here, and never will be.
Race: If I had lots of money, I’d be eccentric. But I’m broke, so I’m just weird.
Davey: ...
men are so annoying, "women belong at home in the kitchen blah blah" and YOU belong in the workshop making me a fuckin table! why arent you forging steel or working metal? go out to the fields jebediah! the wheat needs to be reaped!
You ever just... yell about #newsies??
probably gonna get canceled for this but i hate when people don’t stand for the national anthem :// like show some respect ... personally i really love the song it’s so beautiful and i get goosebumps everytime i hear the “newsies need our help today” at the beginning

star gazing with davey
• • •
the sound of grasshoppers and crisp leaves gusting filled the air.
"shhh." davey whispered, and climbed up the fire escape, pulling you up.
"when you said you had to show me something, i didn't think you were taking me on top of your roof, david-"
you sat on the floor, pulling one of his knit sweaters over your head.
"look up." he gave your hand a squeeze, and you did as you were instructed.
tiny speckles of stars filled the sky, stretching across a velvet sky, making your eyes widen, and your lips curve up in a smile.
"i brought my astrolgy book."
you laughed, of course davey had brought a book. it would be unlike him if he didn't.
"that one there," he pointed up, "is the ursa minor, or the-"
"little dipper." you finished, and he nodded, smiling.
"and that's mercury." he pointed to a flickering red light.
he pointed to a new star, searching for a name in the book.
"i'm not sure what that one is-"
"let's name it."
davey looked at you excitedly.
"y/n."
"what?"
"that's it name. y/n."
you felt your cheeks heat up, "we may have discovered a new star, and you're naming it-"
"y/n. cause you're both stars."
"normally, that would sound cheeky from any other guy, but from you, it sounds poetic."
"well, i am a pretty good writer."
you opened the book, skimming through the last blank page, before the back of the book, grabbing a pen from davey's shirt pocket.
"let's write it in."

#2 - have you lost you damn mind
Thank you so much for sending this in! I had a lot of fun with it!!
“Jack, me and Kath having something to tell you, and you might hate us, but we’re your best friends and we want what’s best for you”
“Race might take offence to that Davey”
“Jack”
“I’m just saying Davey, actually Charlie would too, you know”
“Jack,” Kath interrupted softly, “stop trying to deflect, trust us, ok?”
“Jack,” Davey continued, “Kath and I, we, well we did a thing, and again, I mean I really hope you don’t hate us, but I feel like, at least for a little bit you might get really mad, but like, really we just want to help and”
“Davey, you’re scaring me here, just spit it out would ya?”
“Well, we kinda maybe sentinanapplicationforSantaFeArtSchool”
Silence. The three close friends looked at each other, watching for the others' reactions.
Jack was looking to see if his two best friends in the world were joking, they had to be right? There is no way that they had actually gone and done this.
Davey was waiting for Jack to explode in their faces. Because Jack had a pretty stable life, and a job, and even if he didn't always love teaching high school PE, it gave him the cash he needed to take care of his two little brothers, and this art school was gonna take that stability away. And Jack was right earlier, his brothers were the two most important people in his life.
Kath was easily the most calm of the three. Was she expecting Jack to get angry? Of course, but she knew she had a couple Aces up her sleeve.
“Have the two of you lost your damn minds?” Jack growled, “how the hell am I supposed to do this, not only can I not afford art school, especially Santa goddamn Fe Art School but in case you forgot, I got two little brothers who need me to have a job so they can, you know, eat and..”
“JACK,” Kath interrupted, “firstly, I need you to stop and take a deep breath, ok?? Secondly, obviously, Davey and I thought about the boys ok? You know we love them too. We already talked to both schools, you can teach and study at the same time.”
“And, well, the program you’re in is to teach high school art,” Davey continued, “so not only is this degree practical, but you already are gonna have a job lining up in your dream career. You know Dentons reaching his retirement age, and you know that school and all those loves you and has more than enough PE teachers. They can sacrifice you to the art program. If anyone can get kids interested in art, it’s you, Jackie.”
Jack looked between his two best friends and felt the anger leaving his system and being replaced with absolute joy and disbelief. But there was still one problem.
“I’m sorry for exploding at you guys, but there’s still one problem. It’s expensive as shit. It’s why I became a PE teacher, there’s government funding for that that I’d never get in an art program. And I can’t get a second job to pay for everything, my brothers need me around.” Jack sighed. “So I appreciate it, I do really, but even if I do get in, I don’t think I can go.”
“Well Jack,” Kath smiled, “Davey and I might be able to help with that.”
“I ain’t no charity case Kath,” Jack shot back, “I ain’t taking no money from either of ya”
“You got a scholarship Jackie” Jack stared wide-eyed at Davey, and every coherent thought left his head.
“I’m sorry repeat that again Davey”
“Not only did you get in,” Davey smiled, “you got a scholarship.”
Jack’s slacked jaw was the only warning either of them got before Jack talked the both of them to the floor in a bear hug.
“And Davey,” Jack whispered, quiet enough so only the two of them could hear, “I could never hate you.”
Feel free to send in more prompts!! I’m really enjoying these!!

“Hey, Y/n.” You looked up from the notes you were taking, and set down your pencil.
“Yes?” You turned around to see JoJo, fiddling with his hands, trying to keep his eyes off the floor.
“So, I dunno if you’se knows this, but uh the fair is in town.”
You nodded, and smiled, confused why he was bringing this up to you.
“And?” you asked, looking at the boy, who’s hands were shaking.
“And, some of the boys are going, and I was wonderin’ if you’d like to join me.”
You grinned, making JoJo turn a dusty shade of pink, not realizing your own cheeks matched his.
“Like, a date?” You asked, hopeful.
“Y-yeah. Like a date.”
You nodded your head, and without thinking, and grabbed his hands, cradling them. “I’d love to go with you.”
You looked down, quickly dropping his hands, making JoJo giggle.
“Great. I’ll text you the details”, he whispered then quickly pretended to jot down something in his lined sheet of paper, as your teacher glared at him. He heard you giggle, and fought back a smile, and saluted the teacher, making her shake her head, and chuckle lightly. JoJo’s smile could light up your town, and none the less your English teacher’s bitter personality.
“I can’t wait.” You whispered to him, making his smile spread even more.
“Me either.”
—————————————————————————————————-
“You look great.” You shook your head, laughing as Kath mimed taking pictures, as if you were in a fashion show. You adjusted the cuffs of your jeans, that you embroidered flowers on.
“Thanks. You look great too.” You gestured to the purple floral print dress, and she laughed, and twirled watching the skirts spin.
You snatched a bag from off your desk, and stuffed a ten dollar bill in it.
“They’re here.” Kath said, as she stared at her screen. You froze, and stood staring at her screen.
“Well, what the hell are you waiting for? Let’s go!” She dragged you by the arm out to her driveway, with a car, of noisy boys. Jack honked the steering wheel, and greeted Kath with a cheeky grin.
“Hey Y/n!!” a group of boys greeted you, and JoJo beamed, and waved, bright pink.
“H-hey Y/n. You look lovely.” You hopped over the seats, and made your way to the back where JoJo was sitting.
“Thanks, Jo.” He smiled wider at the nickname. You sat in a comfortable silence with him, and you saw him scoot closer to you, followed by coo’s, and Romeo not so subtly staring at you guys, wiggling his eyebrows at JoJo.
You rolled your eyes playfully, making the other boys laugh. They drew their attention back to the radio, Jack blasting it at an alarming volume.
JoJo stared at the floor, and looked at you and laughed. “Sorry for the volume.” He said, his voice raised so you can hear him.
“It’s fine.” You shouted back, and you giggled and Al, Race, and Buttons starting a “wave”.
“I-I like the flowers on your jeans,” he said pointing to the denim you embroidered.
“Thanks.” You smiled at the compliment and looked at your lap, and then jumped back, almost hitting JoJo’s chest.
Buttons was holding up your foot and examining your work. “You embroider huh? What stitc-”
JoJo shot him a look and he dropped your foot, and muttered a “sorry”.
You shook your head and laughed. “It’s cool. I just used a basic running stitch.” He nodded, and you noticed JoJo looking slightly jealous. You fought back a smile, as he huffed a little, and stared at the window, and you tapped him on the shoulder.
“Joey, I’m really flattered you invited me to go with you to the fair.”
He grinned and looked at you, eyes twinkling. “I’m excited too. I can’t believe you agreed to go.” he said quietly. You clasped his hand gently, and squeezed it, instinctively, then let it go quickly. “Of course, I love being with you.” You looked at him panicked. “L-like hanging out. We’re not dating or anything.” You heard a mumble in front of you coming from Al.
“Not yet.”
You and JoJo turned pink from the comment, and tried to pretend you hadn’t heard it, and JoJo replied sweetly. “I like being with you too.”
You both tried to ignore the teasing from Race and Romeo, in the seats in front of you, and you both looked at the floor awkwardly.
“We’re here!!” Romeo shouted, and Race screamed “Hurry Jack, we’se needs a parkin’ spot, and tickets, and we’se not goin’ to wait forever!!”
Jack shushed the boys as he pulled into a gravel parking lot, and all the boys shoved their way through each other, and bolted to the ticket station, paper bills crumpled in hand.
“After you, m’lady.” JoJo waved his hand obnoxiously, and you giggled at the silliness.
—————————————————————————————————
“So, whadya’ wanna do first?” He asked, stuffing a pocket full of tickets into his shorts.
“I don’t know.” you shrugged. “You pic-”
“C’mon love birds!! We’se goin’ to the carousel.” shouted Elmer, and dragged you both to the line.
You both laughed awkwardly, and raced to the brightly colored horses, and JoJo hopped on one, and dragged you on with him. “Aren’t these supposed to be for one person?” you asked raising your eyebrows. He shrugged, “Guess we’ll find out.” He wrapped your arms around his waist, and he looked at you with a panicked look. “Ya’ know there’s no seat belts. Jus’ wanna make sure you don’t fall,” he explained, clutching the metal pole, connected to the ceiling of the ride.
—————————————————————————————————-
“What’re you doing?” You gasped out as JoJo raced to a pastel cart.
“Getting cotton candy.” He smiled and grabbed your wrist dragging you over. You watched the sugar spin, and the man handed him a pink and blue swirled one. “We’re gonna share,” JoJo explained, and you thanked him politely.
“Why the blue?” You asked as he popped a piece of the candy in his mouth, and he gave you a fake offended look.
“Everyone knows that blue, is the superior to pink cotten candy, Y/n.” You rolled your eyes playfully, as you walked over to the next ride.
“They taste the same.” He shrugged, and popped another piece in his mouth. “Well, I’m only eating the blue part.” He tore off the rest of the blue piece, and handed the rest of the stick to you. “You’re an actual child, you know that?” you said teasingly.
“Well, you love me for it.” He clapped his hand over his mouth, bright red. “W-what I meant wa-”
You giggled as he sighed in relief, “I know what you meant, Jo.”
—————————————————————————————————-
“I forgot I was afraid of drops.” JoJo gulped as the boys in front of you laughed getting ready to fall.
“Don’t worry, I’m right here.” You smiled, and clutched his hand, and looked at him reassuringly.
“Oh my go-” you buried his face in your neck, and you felt his neck heat up.
“How was that?” you asked, after the drop ended, the wind blowing in your hair, your voice raising up, as the roller coaster raced around in a loop.
He blushed, and looked down at your hand holding his.“Not so bad. Thanks.”
—————————————————————————————————-
“C’mon Jo. The game is rigged.” You sighed, as he dropped another ticket in a glass bowl.
“I’m gonna win.” He tossed another ring, finally tossing it on the milk bottle. “See?” he smiled, and tossed you a miniature dolphin plush.
“Jo, you won this it’s yours.” You tried handing it to him, and he threw his hands up in the air.
“No take backs. It’s yours.” You grinned, and placed it in your bag carefully.
“Look. It’s getting dark.” He nodded, and you pointed to the sky.
He grabbed your hand, and smiled. “Let’s go to the ferris wheel.”
—————————————————————————————————-
The boys piled into a car, and laughed, as they floated away, leaving you and JoJo standing there alone, waiting for the next one.
As you guys went up, you stared out the car, and faced towards the smiling boy next to you.
“So, uh I’ve had a great time today.” You nodded, and made eye contact. “I really want to make this a regular thing, and I was wondering, maybe we could, I dunno.” he looked at the floor of the car. “Be, like a thing. ” You grinned, and nodded.
“I’d love to, Jo.” He smiled back, and awkwardly stared at his hands. “I’ve liked you since freshman year, and I-. C-Can I kiss you?” You nodded, and he smiled, and gently placed his lips onto yours, and you smiled into the kiss, and he hummed when you deepened it. You heard cheers, when you guys hit the ground, and he giggled.
“ You taste like cotton candy. “ You laughed, and kissed him again, and pulled him close. “ I’ve waited for you for so long. “ He sighed, and nodded in agreement.
“ Me too. “ —————————————————————————————————- tag list: @your-lover-crutchie, @withsome-payback, @1899-newsboy-strike, @races-erster, @snakeyboimusical, @mathletemadison, @myheartissetinmotion
