I feel like I need an edit of The Magicians to Ginger Lemonade by Good Kid…
Oh shit oh god it’s sad puppy man season.
Ryland Grace weakened me so Quentin Coldwater could deal the final fucking blow.
These goddamn adorable losers with their puppy dog eyes and all the love in the world who just want to love and be loved and something to live for and the world just says hmm how about screw you.
Star Trek is one of those generational fandoms where it’s not impossible for like a parent/grandparent and child/grandkid to both be a part of it without the other knowing.
Like imagine you’re super into a… idk let’s say a K/S fanfic, which gets the most sporadic updates and the author’s notes always have the craziest explanations for why updates are taking so long. And as these incredibly specific ANs continue you realize they sound more and more familiar and you suddenly realize….holy crap is the author my mom?? Does my mom ship??
Don’t mind me I’m just thinking about the parallels between the Project Hail Mary and The Martian.
Project Hail Mary is a movie about a world in crisis, willing to sacrifice one man to save everybody else. It’s a decision made not by the world, but by one person, and ultimately not even the person who has to make the sacrifice. An unwilling sacrifice was made.
Conversely, in The Martian, a world not in crisis comes together to save one man. And it’s a decision made by the world, because if it was just up to the people in charge that man likely would not have been saved. And the only sacrifice really being made (by Watney’s crew) was a willing one.
Both movies are about hope, love, perseverance, and discovering the capabilities that you didn’t know you had to survive and succeed.
But while Project Hail Mary is about a man who finds love and companionship after being rejected by and losing his earthly companionship, The Martian is about a man whose salvation comes in the form of his friends, of the love of the world, being there to rescue him.
And while PHM ends with our protagonist never seeing the Earth he loved ever again, but living with reminders of it in his new home, The Martian ends with our protagonist returning to Earth, while still facing reminders of the life in space he left behind.
One thing I love about Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace is the look of love on his face throughout the movie.
You can see it in so many scenes, but one that especially sticks in my mind is him in that damn sweater vest at the party, looking absolutely besotted as he watches Stratt sing. Watches her open up.
And of course that scene specifically does have to do with the special bond between Stratt and Grace (platonic or romantic or something completely different, take your pick), but I think it also is just a facet of something so crucial to Grace’s character.
Ryland Grace is besotted with earth, and he is besotted with life. He enjoys living and experiencing life so very completely, and you can see it plain as day not just at the party, not just at Tau Ceti, but also in the classroom (engaging his students), in awkward super-classified meetings (cracking jokes), in Home Depot (turning shopping into a game), and so on. He finds ways to enjoy and experience love and happiness in every aspect of his life, especially before he left (was stolen from) earth.
And I think to me that’s what makes what Stratt did to him all the more devastating. Because she does justify it in some way by pointing out that he doesn’t have people, the subtext being that he doesn’t have love in his life to stay for. But he does; he might not have a family or a romantic partner or even a pet, but he lived a life that was so incredibly filled with love, and that just went unappreciated and unrecognized by Stratt.
He had love, and he was taken from it. And nobody bothered to really acknowledge the real sacrifice he was making, was being forced to make, because they just didn’t recognize that love for what it was.
Okay I love love love the names given to the individual songs in the PHM sound track. Like we’ve got two separate ones that start with “Amaze Amaze Amaze”.
Maybe after work I’ll post some of my favourites but like I love the funky soundtrack names.
I keep hearing “grace wears science pun shirts to break the ice with his students” “aww grace wears those shirts to make science more interesting to kids”. Bullshit dude, in all of the classroom scenes he’s wearing business casual. His dumbass science shirts are for the love of the game and nothing else
Though I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them were gifts from his students.
I don’t know if the books go into it, because the movies didn’t seem to…. But if every star is being affected by the astrophage except one (eventually three), wouldn’t that eventually pose a huge problem? Like I only ever took one astronomy course but if every star in the immediate vicinity is being eaten up and reduced to nothing… won’t that eventually cause a major shift in gravity within those star systems and eventually the entire galaxy?
I’m sure given the distance between stars this wasn’t the most immediate issue and it’ll probably take a ton of time to kick in (human lifetimes upon lifetimes, maybe) but wouldn’t that be an eventual concern? So wouldn’t earth eventually want to send taumoebas to other star systems as well?
And I guess, even if it doesn’t pose a problem for the stability or habitability of earth, I can just imagine how sad it would be to over the decades, suddenly see less and less stars in the sky, until there’s only two left.

Despite everything, it's still you.

Why was my first thought (albeit jokingly) that even the space photos have succumbed to modern Hollywood’s washed out palette standards 😔
It’s such a small thing but I’m just thinking about how in the beginning of the movie Stratt says to Grace how she needs people like him who won’t admit they’re wrong… and then in the end his parting words to her after he succeeds is that she was right, that he was wrong about himself.
Novelty t-shirt that says “Am I a Lover or a Fighter? Try a Lover, Fighter, and Biter”
this recent trend of teenagers using genAI chatbots to talk to fictional characters is fucking grim. what you should be doing is roleplaying on private messages with your friends until the lines between you & the characters begin to blur & you develop some very complex & confusing feelings for each other that culminate in a massive fallout you dont have the tools to process nor understand
Ugh I miss shamchat
I know Veronica Mars is one of the quintessential Teenage Sleuths™️ but I feel like the series as a whole makes more sense when you view it less through the lens of the Teenage Sleuth and more through the lens of the Noir Detective. Or at least as a progression from one to the other. Because Veronica Mars is essentially the origin story for a modern Noir Detective.
Especially after the first season, as we see more and more corruption in Neptune as the very atmosphere of the city changes, and Veronica changes. The movie is pretty peak this for me, but I think Season 4 and beyond supports this progression.
There are so so many good parallels between Alastor and Vox but one thing I thought was the most interesting was that for Vox, power was his goal and murder/depravity/manipulation was his means, but for Alastor acquiring power was his means to continue his “fun”— murder/depravity/manipulation was the goal.
Maybe I’m totally off base but based on what her power projection looked like when destroying the bomb (almost like old film), her outfit/aesthetic indicating what era she’s from, and her weird thing against cameras… I’m wondering if Niffty was an overlord related to (and maybe whose death related to) movies. And I mean OLD movies…. Talkies or silent films.
her costume is from the 1950's. her weapon is an oversized sewing needle. her power displayed as stitches. her whole schtick is that she's a housewife & homemaker--cooks, cleans, sews, mends, attacks commies.
Kinda fits (except time period) one of the women Vox kills in his origin song. Though that’s an even bigger stretch and not a theory or anything.
But also I’m not saying she’s a movie star, but I think television/home-makers were incredibly connected to television as the TV became the center of the home. Especially as points of contention/focus in nuclear households. So still might have a connection for an extreme dislike of cameras.
Of course stitches makes a lot more sense for what the power resembled lmao.
