ââ1. push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise. 2. push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable. 3. erase processed food from your diet. start with no lollies, chips, biscuits, then erase pasta, rice, cereal, then bread. use the rule that if a child couldnât identify what was in it, you donât eat it. 4. get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else. 5. stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything. 6. buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice. 7. buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small. 8. strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full. 9. organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you donât want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle. 10. have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck. 11. push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dogâs behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog. 12. message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you donât follow through. push yourself to follow through. 14. think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything. 15. become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends. 16. lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasnât a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.ââ
â Sixteen Small Steps to Happiness (via wethinkwedream)
I havenât met all of me yet.
What a lovely and terrifying thought all at the same time
Every day my inbox has messages from people calling me fake and saying thereâs no way anyone can be âthis niceâ to which I say, youâre right. I am not a naturally nice, kind or even a particularly patient person. I also worry endlessly that I might not be a particularly good one either.
I am in fact very angry, usually exhausted and often standing on my absolute last shredded nerve.
But I try.
Because I know the person I have been, the person I am, and the person I hope I am capable of being.
And I make the choice to try and do better. To contemplate before speaking, to challenge myself on why something upsets me, to correct myself when I make mistakes, and to hold myself to those corrections because otherwise it really would be fake.
I try to make time, to listen to what people say, to process it and reflect on how what I say in return might affect them, and then I try to speak with patience and understanding, even when someone has chosen not to be kind in return.
In short, as much as I hate what the term has come to mean in certain circles, I have chosen to be mindful. Not just for the sake of others but myself too.
And do you know, there seems to be some truth to the adage âfake it till you make itâ because the longer I do these things, the easier it becomes.
Itâs scary, to open yourself up and look at all the things you dislike or even outright hate about yourself. Itâs really, truly unpleasant, and there will likely never be a time when I am ever content with what I find when I look inside. But treating myself and others with love, civility and respect is a start toward fixing it.
So yes. You are right. I am neither good nor kind.
But Iâm trying.
And I would think that is something to be encouraged instead of torn apart. Donât you?
This is such a true part of being a public figure, even if that only means running a popular blog. Iâve often discussed with my friends how much more patient and kindly-spoken I am on my blog than in real life in general, because I have time to think. If an ask strikes me as important but upsetting, I can say, âIâll come back to that tomorrow, when I have less to worry about.â If someone is downright mean, I can delete their message without engaging them at all. In real life, if someone confronts you, especially aggressively, there isnât much of a choice whether or not to respond or retaliate. The situation demands attention. Even if you are doing your best to be patient, and kind, in the moment, even if you are right, you may not seem like the person youâre working to be. Online, if someone confronts me aggressively, I have the option of saying, âbut whatâs the point?â Itâs not being âfakeâ to seem cleaner, more patient, nicer, online. Itâs just how it works.
Mindfulness is exactly the word.
I will continue to have a sunny outlook. Because [people with] a sunny outlook are a lot easier to deal with, be around, befriend and handle than people who are bitter. People who are, like, complaining about the life of being a celebrity. Itâs a little irritating.
Iâm upset because I want to change the world but the world is too big and people are too mean
âDo not be daunted by the enormity of the worldâs grief. Do justly, now. Love mercy, now. Walk humbly now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.â - Rabbi Tarfon
itâs scary how many people think they want to die when really they want to start livingÂ
â° tag yourself: cities â°
paris: soft smiles, blooming flowers, lots of sunlight, stories swirling in your mind, cursive letters, piercing eyes, whispers filled with secrets
new york: gives zero fucks about othersâ opinions, perfect eyebrows, no sleep, a bit sad inside, huge equal rights activist, red lipstick, artsy af, string lights, lots of coffee, high waisted jeans
london: new ideas, old architecture, a soft voice, flickering candles, intelligent eyes, loud laughter, dancing alone in your room, big dreams, hot tea
montrĂŠal: comfy socks, french bakeries, lover of books, bold thoughts, wide smiles, kinda broken, cute jackets, warm hot chocolate, cobblestone streets
tokyo: aesthetic af, pen sketches, bright colors, bold fashion, small yet powerful smiles, striving for greatness, cute glasses
rome: loves museums, kind words, tangled earbuds, a bit in love, bright eyes, artsy photos, likes history, open windows, probably sings in the shower
ultimately i think kindness is the most radical thing you can do with your pain and your anger. itâs like, you take everything awful thatâs ever been done to you, and you throw it back in the worldâs teeth, and you say no, fuck you, iâm not going to take this. Â you say this is unacceptable. you say that shit stops with me.
humans are fucking terrible and this awful world we live in will fucking kill you but if you are kind, if you are brave and clever and try really hard, you can defy it. you can impose on this bleak and monstrous structure something beautiful. even if itâs temporary. even if it doesnât heal anything inside you thatâs been hurt. Â
iâm gonna sleep and iâm gonna wake up and i swear by everything in this deadly horrible universe iâm gonna make someone happy.Â
iâve seen a number of comments and tags where people feel that they must swallow or repress their anger in order to engage in kindness. that is not at all what i am recommending here. radical kindness is an expression of anger. it is not passive. it is not repressive. it does not require you, in any way, to forgive those that have fucked you up. it does not require you to be quiet.Â
it just requires that you be kind. viciously. vengefully. you fight back. you plant flowers. give to charity. play games. pet someoneâs dog. scream into the dark. paint and write and dance, tell jokes, sing songs, bake cookies. you have been hurt and you donât have to deny that hurt. you just have to recognize it in other people, and take their hand, and say: no more. enough. fuck this. no more.Â
have a cookie.
i will say this again: we are all going to die. the universe is enormous and almost entirely empty. to be kind to each other is the most incredible act of defiance against the dark that i can imagine.Â
i will say this again: we are all going to die. the universe is enormous and almost entirely empty. to be kind to each other is the most incredible act of defiance against the dark that i can imagine.
1. The universe is indifferent. We ought not be.
2. A good quote:Â There are two kinds of people. Those who think, âI donât want anyone to suffer like I did.â And those who think, âI suffered; why shouldnât they?â
3. Two good quotes by Kurt Vonnegut: âHello babies. Welcome to Earth. Itâs hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Itâs round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, youâve got a hundred years here. Thereâs only one rule that I know of, babies-âGod damn it, youâve got to be kind.â
And: âBe soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.â
Another good quote:
âI. THIS IS NOT A GAME.
II. HERE AND NOW, WE ARE ALIVE.â
You can be kind and fuel it with rage. You can be kind and fuel it with a bitter twist, or you can be kind and fuel your kindness with righteous anger, or you can be kind and fuel it with love or spite or ecstatic joy. And no matter what your fuel is, you still can make kindness happen in the world so that people can warm themselves by it.
Kindness isnât an emotion, kids. Thatâs the thing. Kindness is action. Kindness is choosing to take your emotions and channel them towards doing the most good where you can; to choose the targets of your actions carefully; to spread a little joy behind you, when you have a little to spare.
Kindness can mean a gentle word or a shouted imperative. It can be a warm meal or a gentle hug or a clean death. Kindness can manifest in many ways, and not all of them are one hundred percent nice. The kind thing to do may be doing nothing at all.Â
But kindness is, above all else, an action. We are imperfect humans, and we cannot control our emotionsâbut we can control what we do as a result. We can control the actions that our emotions and experiences propel us to perform.Â
The darkness is nothing but the absence of light, you know. It is endless and nihilistic and all enveloping. A lit candle has no hope against it.
But if enough of us light small candles and little matches behind us as we walk through this wide, uncaring universe, we can light up that sky. We can take an empty world and we can fill it with each other.Â
Thatâs how we can take the bones of an empty universe and forge a warm hearth fire humanity can use to keep back the night.Â
But kindness is, above all else, an action. We are imperfect humans, and we cannot control our emotionsâbut we can control what we do as a result. We can control the actions that our emotions and experiences propel us to perform.
Iâm also a fan of Camus:
âIn the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. And that makes me happy. For it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, thereâs something stronger â something better, pushing right back.â
âThere are three ways to ultimate success. The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.â â Fred Rogers
âAny man can be kind when he is comfortable. Iâd always thought kindness a trivial virtue therefore. But when we were hungry, thirsty, sick, frightened, with our deaths shouting at us, in the heart of horror, you were still as unfailingly courteous as a gentleman at his ease before his own hearth.â âEvents may be horrible or inescapable. Men have always a choice - if not whether, then how they may endure.â      â   Lois McMaster Bujold, The Curse of Chalion  Â
i know weâre still very young, but i donât have a doubt in my mind that i love you with all my heart
âGirls, we are wolves. We hide our fangs behind innocent smiles and red lipstick. Girls, we are dragons. Our voices carry the heat of our injustices and pain. Girls, we are fighters. Bullets and knives can pierce our skin but not our souls. Girls, we are human beings. We crack, we fall, and we bleed. But we always, always stand back up.â
â You canât break us //Â k.s. (via starcrossedpoetry)
Decided to make a flower crown for my cat Hani
dear universe;
hello. i am writing to let you know you did good job on the stars, and also on cats.
yours respectfully, me
dear universe,
in the original post of this, it says âdogsâ where it now says âcatsâ. i do not know when (or how) it got changed, but i am glad that someone loved cats enough to do that, because i love my dog and i also love my cats and i felt bad about not mentioning it that first time. iâm also glad for all the tags where people told me what i should have added (like libraries and waffles and maple syrup) and i am glad for all the comments about how much they love their pets (and some people have such cool pets!)
i kind of think, universe, if we are your children, this is our macaroni art. see, see, see, you gave us a little bit of the stars, and weâve made our own constellations. we tried to give back to you by making art and music and books and bad poetry and our laughter and our love and our tv dramadies. we took pictures of the night sky and pictures of sunsets and pictures of dew, we fell in love with space and the rivers and the rain. i personally have my desktop background as a picture of one of your nebulas. your hair looked great that day.
i thinkâŚ. you did a good job, universe, on the stars, and what the stars became, because you put us together and yes, yes, things might be terrible - but good gracious did we make so many things worth loving, worth writing to you about, worth telling you - thank you, iâm taking the spark you put in me and using it to be kind, to be alive, to be wildly fierce about our gardens and gentle about our pets.
so hello. i amend my previous memo. i am writing to let you know you did a good job on the stars, and on my dog and my cats and the lizard i kept illegally in my apartment. and universe, i hope youâre watching, because some of the people you made? theyâre great, universe, and theyâre full of love, just endlessly capable of loving. and they give me hope.
and through them, universe, thatâs you. thatâs how the stars sing.
yours respectfully, me

Pay attention to the things you are naturally drawn to. They are often connected to your path, passion, and purpose in life.
