My artwork for the Legend of Korra concert!
Katara has many regrets in life but giving her boy the Jinshi Haircut is not one of them.
THE JINSHI HAIRCUT!!!
Post canon Toph who doesn’t want to go back to her shitty parents so she just decides to stay in the Fire Nation and bum off Zuko’s hospitality.
Zuko’s like no, yeah, I totally get it, and just makes her one of his advisors. At first it’s just so she has a good excuse to stay but after the first meeting Toph storms out shouting about how EVERYONE was lying why would you even need to lie about what kind of tea you want??
Zuko: I mean they’re politicians…..but also who, and when, and in what way
They make a subtle Morse code system so Toph can warn him when someone is lying to him without tipping anyone off that she can sense lies.
Zuko gets a reputation for somehow being both extremely socially inept and yet somehow disgustingly perceptive?? You can’t get ANYTHING by him???
#my lord what EXACTLY is ms Beifongs role in these meetings #a nervous nobleman asks after the third time she interrupts them with stupid commentary #zuko with perfect deadpan: she’s my scribe
You CAN’T leave that in the tags

Poor thing, she's dying from cringe 😔

Mind you he asked her to be cautious
Sent a 12 year old on a fake Hero’s Journey last week and holy shit he actually did it
idk man just having a lot of thoughts about how loving katara was aang’s downfall, but zuko’s triumph. how they’re both struck and permanently scarred by azula’s lightning because of their love for her but in aang’s case it’s a tragedy, something that could have been averted if he’d let go of her, whereas in zuko’s case it’s his absolution, the final step in his redemption. how their scars mirror each other, with aang’s scar on his back because he turned his back on his duty to save katara, but zuko’s scar on his chest because saving her was his duty, bringing him back full circle to the heart of who he is - someone who protects the innocent, no matter what the cost.
in the end, aang’s love for katara dooms him while zuko’s love for katara saves him, and i just think there’s something so beautifully poetic about that.
He's so

Book 3 | That painful moment when we saw Zuko and Katara reach for the other from their POV *sob*
I just realized something, you see, I love the fact that Zuko jumped in front of lightning for Katara cause it shows how Zuko is as a person, not because of the implication of Zutara or whatever. Yes, it’s a beautiful scene, and it shows how strong their friendship has grown. It shows Zuko’s selflessness. But let’s say it wasn’t Katara, like maybe it was Toph or Sokka or even Suki, will Zuko do the same? A 100% yes. He’d do it without thinking, because that’s just how Zuko is.
You know what’s the best part about the Agni Kai that screams ZUTARA? It’s these; Zuko reaching out for Katara even with all the pain he’s in and Katara reaching for him in desperation even with Azula on the offensive.
From a storytelling/storyboarding perspective, these frames show that they were each other’s priorities even in the midst of the chaos.
The No “I Love You” Animatic In case Tumblr can’t play the video, here’s the Vimeo Link
Link to the AO3 collection So, when @fictionissocialinquiry laid out this challenge, it was mainly for writers; but she included some extra prompts therein, and one was a line from Hozier’s “Shrike”.
I couldn’t whisper when you needed it shouted This led me to listen to “Shrike” on repeat while I feverishly started doodling the thumbnails for the animatic I got in my head (so I hope that some of that emotion from Hozier’s amazing song comes through in the final board, ‘cause I listened to it. A. Lot.). While I think it’s a bit easier for drawings to express “I love you” without any words needed at all. I wanted to try and approach the task by thinking of ways one can confess that they love someone through acts of service and tenderness versus super obvious displays of love, I guess. It came out with a sort of courtly love-ish vibe that I really ended up liking. (Though I suppose reciprocation makes it not courtly love ANYWHO…)
I’m in an Ambassador Katara/Fire Lord Zuko state of mind! I just love any love story with them in these roles. There are so many different ways to play with the set up of them as Ambassador and Fire Lord. In this one, I kind of picture that they haven’t gotten together yet (this is divergent from whatever I did in the Reunion animatics; this is it’s own thing). Perhaps they are on the precipice of realizing they want to be together… I don’t know; it’s open to interpretation. XD but what I hope I portrayed clearly is how one can show that they love another. u.u

Please no reposting. (And while I don’t mind screenshots being posted so long as you credit me with a link to either the tumblr post or the Vimeo link, please don’t post like a bunch of frames, and there should be no money being made off of it; this is a purely not-for-profit sort of thing. These were for fun, and I enjoy people liking them one so much. However, the screenshot rule ONLY applies to the animatics, but it really is an honor system here, guys, please be judicious with how many you take.)

One girl connects emotionally, but doesn't get to touch his scar
One girl gets to touch his scar, but doesn't connect emotionally
One girl did both
The lesson of avatar was never “killing bad people makes you just as bad as them” it was “you cannot be letting fascists dictate what counts as a win or loss” guys like come on it’s been 20 years
Katara doesn’t forgive Yon Rha and hug him and dry him off and walk him home she leaves him scared and sniveling and crying in the mud but she leaves him alive because she realized in that moment that she was only doing this because she felt like she had to. She hates this man, therefore she should want to kill him, right? The narrative isn’t saying wow Katara killing a mass murdering fascist dickwad is just as bad as said dickwad killing an innocent wife and mother during a raid on her home, it’s saying wow isn’t it fucked up that this little girl has been forced to carry this deep seated anger in her for most of her life to the point where the only outlet she believes she has for it is killing a man in cold blood? And like… yeah! That is pretty fucked!
ATLA is also very clear in season one that removing someone who is doing harm, who will continue to do harm if left unimpeded, and who can't be stopped as long as they're a presence from the board is the correct move. Admiral Zhao is as close to killed on screen as you can get in a nicktoon. Chin the conqueror is murdered on screen, nicktoons style. In the finale they do as much as they have to to show the soldiers on the downed airship pop to the surface, because again, it's on nickelodeon in the afternoons.
Aang doesn't kill Ozai because the teachings of the monks are all he has left of them. Katara doesn't kill Yon Rha because she realizes in the moment that killing a sniveling retiree won't fix anything. Zuko doesn't kill Azula because his entire sense of self hinges on the idea that anyone can be redeemed.
The reasons the main cast choose not to kill are interesting and worth exploring, but the idea that ATLA shies away from death and killing is just factually incorrect.
“the parallels between Zuko and Sokka-” hey HEY. I am grabbing you. The parallels between Katara and Azula. Both the younger, gifted bender. Each one being the inverse of the other: a living, breathing what if. Katara being horrified at what her bending can do when pushed to its limits vs Azula always trying to push hers further. Katara instinctively trusting everyone so easily, even though it burns her sometimes, and Azula saying trust is for fools, fear is the only reliable way but still losing everyone she cares about in the end. Katara yelling at her dad and being hugged in return vs Azula doing everything possible to please her father still being harshly reprimanded, so you know exactly why they both turned out the way that they did. Katara’s trauma being connected to losing a mother vs Azula’s being connected to having a mother. Katara ultimately being the one to take down Azula and standing over her, staring pitifully because that’s who she could have been, in another life. is this thing on
