The “wings” here are membraneous patagia originating in ornamental soft-tissue flaps attached to initially immobile lateral shoulder spikes. The subdermal musculature and connective tissue underlying the supporting spines became complexified as communication with the display flags grew more sophisticated, eventually resulting in an extraordinarily complex resonant battery of rigid ligaments and tendons attached to a powerful mobile mass of fast-twitch muscles. Employed in increasingly impressive prismatic vibratory (and possibly auditory) mating displays, the patagia were eventually repurposed into a locomotory capacity as the fluid vortices generated by the wings’ high-frequency vibration incidentally produced aerodynamic lift. Countless generations down the road, these animals are now fully functional flyers powered by the high sugar density of their homeworld’s gargantuan flowering plants. A flying/hovering nectarivorous stegosaur converging on a bee or hummingbird.
