I just love how wincest shippers own the toxicity. We're literally saying "yeah, they are both terrible people, yeah their relationship is the epitome of unhealthiness, yeah, Sam's will got broken in season 8, yeah, Dean has no self-worth outside of Sam, yes they are brothers, we know" and I think that is very sexy of us.
that's because they're not healthy or regular people!!!! they're mad men willing to do anything to save eachother, even if it means dooming the world!!! it always shocks me a little when people who have supposedly seen the show don't grasp this aspect of them like......what show have you been watching? have you really been skipping all the episodes focused on the brothers?
like i know we say they want to be good and have saved the world a bunch of times (which is usually ending because of them) or whatever but also they kill people!! they blur the lines of morality however they see fit! they've done all sorts of fucked up things they're not babies!
yeah they've fucked their own and eachother's lives up, yeah they've saved eachother countless times, and yeah they can't feel truly whole without the other, they are out of their minds but they always have been, this isn't news!!
i don't know what my point is but yeah they're literally insane. if some fans have watched the entire thing without realizing this was never a healthy fluffy sibling relationship then sorry to those people </3
So anyone wanna talk about the literal prophetic Dean way back in season 8 saying how he wanted to die with a gun in his hand and he wanted Sam to grow old and fat and chugging viagra? How that was his perfect ending?
And I know he was a little suicidal back then, and Sam took on the trials specifically to show Dean that he didn’t need to go out that way, but Dean WANTED to go out fighting. He tried the apple pie life with Lisa and it was never fully satisfying for him. He tells Sam, “You’re stronger than me,” Calling back to season 3 where he tells Sam the same thing. that Sam can keep going without him but Dean can’t keep going without Sam.
And that’s tragic, and painful, and Dean learning to exist in a space without Sam would have been character growth, but the story was NEVER headed there.
Dean stopped trying to exist as a separate entity from Sam after season 5. His whole arch was him learning to let Sam go, and then the instant he does it he regrets it and wants to take it back. Sam came back into his life and for the next few years he needed Dean to take care of him. First he was soulless, then the fragile hell wall, then Sam’s hallucinations, then Sam doing the trials and almost dying. this culminated in Dean making the exact OPPOSITE decision of what he did in season 5, letting Sam be possessed by Gadreel against his will. And that was really bad, and Dean had to make his way back from that. But his character growth was never centered on being able to exist separately from Sam, it was giving Sam back his agency and choice.
And he only kind of succeeded in that … sorta. But there was never a version of this story where Dean learns to exist without Sam, where he keeps going separately from Sam. And Sam would never be able to settle down if Dean was around. Sam would have stayed with Dean forever. And we can talk about how unhealthy and codependant that is and the problems with it and I’m sure we will until we’re all blue in the face and exhausted, but in terms of the story the writers and Jared and Jensen were telling, Sam NEVER would have left Dean. Dean had to be taken from him, Dean had to tell Sam to let him go, and then Sam could exist for a while until he could reunite with Dean.
Dean telling Sam, “You’re stronger than me,” is obviously referring to Sam being able to exist in a world without Dean. Sam hurt the entire time, but he did it. He lived. And he raised little Dean and healed a part of himself in the process. But the story couldn’t be complete until he reunited with Dean and felt whole again.
So sure, we can talk about the unhealthy dependency, we can talk about the mixed messages about agency and abuse and how the brothers treated each other, we should dissect the implications of Dean’s “blunt little soldier.” But in terms of this specific story, this TV show, with the actors and writers who were working on it, the ending couldn’t be anything else. It gave me closure. It gave me a Winchester left standing, and it gave me the brothers together. And that’s all I wanted, really.
Every time I think I might be able to stop crying I think of something else. Like Dean saying heaven is almost perfect and Bobby saying “He’ll be along” like his whole life all he needed was Sam and Bobby just instantly knew that.
When you just got back the parent you lost over ten years ago, and the other parent you never see is also around … and you can’t wait to spend more time with the brother you’re with 24/7.
One of the weirdest and yet most genuine parts of the episode.
