Subaru Alcione SVX Version L, 1991. The most ambitious product in Subaru’s 60 year history, it was their first attempt to enter the luxury/performance car market. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, it was first presented as a concept in 1989 and put into production unchanged including the “aircraft-inspired glass-to-glass canopy”. With a DOHC 24 valve 3.3 litre flat 6 engine, all wheel drive and 4 wheel steering (on the Version L) there was no lack of ambitious engineering. Apparently Subaru lost $3,000 on every SVX sold, for a total loss of around $75,000,000 on this project. It was not replaced when it was discontinued in December 1996
