What was happening right now? To say the reaction of the girl to him returning her wallet did surprise him, would have been an underestimation. Sure, he did expect someone to be thankful for getting such an important item back, but he wasn’t exactly the guy that was used to hugs and the like. However, he did notice the rather unique sounding ‘thank you’ she let out too, but it would be rude to comment on something like that, wouldn’t it? Especially right after meeting her…

A little relieved when she let go of him, he tried to sort his own thoughts, while taking a few steps back. She seemed like a really nice girl indeed, but truth was, he was kind of embarrassed right now, so small talk was the way to distract from that. 

“Ahaha, you’re welcome. It was actually kind of lucky that I did find you, really. So… you’re standing in line for one of those games? Which one did you have in mind trying out?”

Shouko is still far too invested in the return of her wallet that she fails to realize that the kind stranger is attempting to initiate small talk with her. But as soon as she looks up at him and realizes that he’s seemingly waiting for an answer, she flinches in surprise and quickly pulls her phone out from her pocket. 

It doesn’t take her longer than a minute to type down exactly what she needs to say in every first encounter she finds herself walking into. She breathes in with a nervous rise of her shoulders before finally presenting the screen of her phone to him.

❝Thank you so much for returning my wallet and I will forever be grateful! I was born with hearing impairment which is why I’m using my phone to communicate. I would love to reward you for your act of kindness though!❞

The blond boy squints as he leans forward and reads the text. His realisation is plainly visible, his eyebrows raising as the brown eyes followed the lines. Propping a finger to his chin, Ryuji looks between the phone, and the girl repeated times.

“Hearing impairment, huh…? Geez, must suck…”

Someone not possessing something that he took for granted certainly made Ryuji feel a bit guilty. And if the slight redness of his cheeks wasn’t enough to indicate his embarrassment for rambling to the bed, the nervous scratching at the back of his head certanly did.

Despite that, what he felt wasn’t pity per se. Closer to… respect? He had always felt repressed in some way by society, but then there are those who are physically repressed, and yet there she was, playing volleyball, enrolled in university.

With a sudden spark of inspiration in his eyes, Ryuji reaches into his pocket and pulls out a weathered smartphone with a cracked screen. He excitedly taps away at it before flipping it over to Shouko.

He turns his phone back and thumbs a few more words.

He gives a cocksure smirk, feeling proud of himself for bridging a gap.

The uneasiness that follows after is almost palpable and Shouko brings her phone to her chest, hazel eyes trailing down to the floor in fear of seeing how her companion would react to her disability. While it is rare for people to respond in an unpleasant manner to her hearing impairment nowadays, images of her middle school days still flash viciously in her mind every time she feels the need to reveal her lack of hearing.

A certain movement from Ryuji catches her attention and she musters up the courage to lift her gaze back at him again. She finds him tapping away on his phone, a gleam of unexpected enthusiasm flooding his features. There doesn’t seem to be a touch of malice in his expression and for a moment, a wave of relief overcomes the butterflies in Shouko’s stomach.

She suddenly jolts in fear as her body instinctively tenses up the second the boy shows her his phone.

Oh.

She blinks at the text written on the screen that appears to be cracked (which goes to show the possibility of the other having clumsy fingers). After a second or two, a reassured smile graces her lips and all worries of being picked on are sent flying out the window. She starts tapping on her phone again in response:

❝That’s all right. Perhaps I just need ibuprofen. The nurse must have it in their cabinet somewhere.❞

❝    okay chouchou  ,  which one do you want to make  ?  cupcakes or cookies  ?  ❞  with each word  ,  the blonde’s hands would gesture to sign towards the pinkette  .  genuine simper portrays patience  ,  understanding  ,  excitement  .  shouko and minako have grown to be sisters  ,  especially after sharing a space for quite some time  .  while they were only a year apart  ,  minako took on the duty of being the protective elder  ;  blackwood university housed sharks that would try to devour the girl alive  ,  given her personality and innocence  .  ( NOT ON MY WATCH !  )  the urge to strike anybody down that attempted something disgusting towards her was pre-ordained from the moment they met  .  

chouchou  ,  it was a nickname minako gave shouko because she reminded her of a butterfly  .  while it initially derived from her mispronouncing her real name in her half - sleep disorientation  ,  it ended up sticking and becoming a cute petname .  pointing towards the cake box and the cookie mix  ,  the blonde awaits her answer  .  ❝  and don’t worry  ,  you don’t have to pig out on them  .  i’ll take care of that  ~   !!  I just wanna celebrate how good you’ve been doing with work and classes  ,  definitely can balance it a lot better than me  ,  you know !  ❞  

❝Ahm...❞ Hesitation dawns on the young girl’s features as she carefully considers the two options presented before her, tapping a finger on her chin as she does so. Both desserts sound equally nice to consume today but she couldn’t possibly inconvenience Minako with that excessive length of time. Unlike her, she’s fairly certain her roommate has her own circle of friends to occupy her time with on a weekend and the younger girl simply doesn’t want to keep her from doing as such. Nevertheless, she’s grateful for her friend’s efforts to reward her for all the hard work she’s been doing and this very moment almost has her missing her friends and family back home.

They used to always celebrate everything together and she’s certain that they would have absolutely loved Minako if they have the chance to meet her. To say that the blonde is a good friend would be an understatement. Over the course of time they’ve spent together, Shouko could say with certainty that the person who was just once a roommate to her is now her family and she wouldn’t have it any other way. They differ a lot in terms of strength, interests, and perhaps in personality as well— but they still click. Shouko couldn’t possibly imagine what her university life would have been like if Minako isn’t around to keep her motivated.

❝I would love to make cookies.❞ She settles on a final decision with a gentle move of her hands. ❝Perhaps we should make more for your friends as well?❞

Semimaru is coming back from his classes, shoulders drooped and steps heavy as he meanders across campus. He’s starving and once again he didn’t understand half of what the lecture was about…and his backpack is so heavy with his soul and also what all he’s got to do.

So when she stops him he takes a second or two to blink at her, confused and initually annoyed–

“What? If this is some frat–” his eyes follow the line of her hand to her backpack.

“What the hell?? How’d you get it way up there?!” Of course he’s going to ask first. 

While Shouko still has problems with reading lips, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the guy is asking for an explanation. But should that really matter? The cause of her dilemma is not one she could explain without feeling or looking silly. Instead, she just insists on pointing at her backpack for the second time before pressing her hands together in a gesture of desperate plea.

She just hopes he knows how to climb trees because if he doesn’t and he refuses to do anything to help her, then she’ll be back to square one. She wouldn’t even blame him if he turns her down though. Not everyone is free to fix her inconveniently dumb mistakes.

          HIS WORKS WERE ALWAYS APPLAUDED ! A prodigy like himself had met thousands of musicians and made a name for himself in that world, that’s why since years ago he had claimed the right to be a judge to those who allowed themselves to participate in musical activities. 

          It is when he was in the backstage of the auditorium ( which is usually empty in common days ), his home, the place that had met his art countless of times, it was being invaded by someone foreign to his knowledge. It was bad, her singing was out of tune, barely making any sense, though it seemed she was aware of it, so he would give her that, to have the courage to stand up there even if her public was a single person. He starts walking towards her, slowly clapping after her performance, perhaps he wasn’t acclaiming her talent but her audacity, or perhaps he was just faking it, who knows! 

          ❝ Sorry if I interrupted you! That was quite the performance huh?❞  His hands rests on the side of his hips. ❝ I am curious though, are you deaf?❞ He asks nonchalantly, a smiling face almost annoying intruding in someone’s business. 

Shouko couldn’t figure out the gears shifting behind those indecipherable eyes but she catches the word ‘deaf’ forming on his lips and that alone is enough to tell her what he thinks of her singing. In an instant, images of taunting classmates blaming her lack of vocal finesse for making their class look like a joke cloud her mind. It sends the familiar paralyzing spark of fear down her spine and she feels her fingers twitch by her sides.

Is he going to taunt her as well? Or is he already taunting her? She couldn’t tell. He’s smiling but there’s not a trace of sincerity in it. Then again, she has been told that she has poor judgment of character so perhaps she’s just reading him wrong. 

She opens her mouth, closes it, turns around, and immediately runs away.

Shouko sprints down the stage in an attempt to escape the possibility of ridicule. But the adrenaline flooding her system just pushes her to catch her own foot and she crashes down to the floor in a pathetic, humiliating heap before she could even get any further away from a potential bully.

The line for the pizza food truck wasn’t long. But it sure wasn’t moving either. Octavio tapped his foot rapidly in his impatience. Then shuffled his weight. Looked around. Tapped his foot again. This was pizza, it couldn’t possibly take this long. He was about to abandon his want for cheesy, saucy bread when a waft of roasted garlic on the wind smacked him across the face. No, he really wanted pizza.

It was time to see what was taking so long. Breaking out of the line, Octavio went up to the window. There was a girl trying to order her food, and the guy behind the register was, whether intentionally or unintentionally, being rather belligerent. He didn’t seem to understand what she’d typed into her phone for her order, and the exchange was going back and forth, delaying the hungry masses their pizza.

Sliding up, intending to correct this so he could eat, Octavio put himself halfway between the girl and the counter, facing her. His hands were a bit jittery and he moved fast enough that it would be a blur to most people who didn’t know what he was doing.

❛ SSL or ASL? ❜

He’d learned the first from that one time he’d ruptured both eardrums standing a little too close to a concussive blast. The second one just came naturally, since it was similar enough and he knew English anyway.

A hurricane of panicked negative thoughts occupies her mind as she takes a quick glance over her shoulder to see that the people lining up behind her are starting to look like they’re on the brink of their patience. A tap on her head brings her back to the situation at hand and she faces the unpleasant male employee who has been tapping her head with his pen and gesturing to the line every time she tries to type something on her phone.

For some reason, whatever order she shows the guy, he just shakes his head and shrugs his shoulders as though informing her they’re all out of that type of pizza.

Four types of pizza already asked and they somehow don’t have any of those anymore. It makes sense considering it’s very late in the afternoon and they are known for having really good pizza. As Shouko tries to tap the words ‘chicago thin crust’ on her phone and failing miserably thanks to her shaky fingers, a shadow before her catches her attention and she looks up to find an unfamiliar man moving his hands in what she understands perfectly well. 

A relieved and excited smile graces her lips at his question. Finally! Someone who knows sign language! She regrets not having met him before, even though fate is completely out of her hands.

❝ASL.❞ She naturally switches to her preferred form of communication amounted to hand gestures. She’s much more comfortable with JSL, but she’s glad that she’s learned ASL as well. ❝I’ve been trying to order pizza but they’re all out of the things I’ve mentioned so far. Would you be so kind as to ask if they have Chicago thin crust? If not, then I will be on my way.❞

Sou wouldn’t consider himself as the most earnest person on campus, but when found a lost wallet around all the people getting ready to celebrate, something inside of him wanted to return it to the right owner. Maybe it was because the ID photo of the person inside of it, looked innocent more or less. too. But he knew best. that you couldn’t always judge a book by it’s cover. No matter who that girl would end up to be though, starting into the new year with a wallet lost, was pretty crappy. 

It was pretty lucky that he got to see her, when she was standing in some line for one of the game attractions. Could it be,that she didn’t know yet that she lost it? Or was he mistaken her for the girl on the photo? No, it had to be her. 

“Excuse me, miss!” He called out for her, but no reaction. Well, he couldn’t blame her… ‘miss’ could be anyone, right? That’s why he approached her closer and poked her on her shoulder from behind. “Err, sorry… Don’t worry. I’m not some weirdo or anything. It’s just, uh…” He just handed her the wallet he found earlier. “That’s yours, right?”

A lot of people seem to really like the classic Whac-A-Mole arcade game and Shouko isn’t one to pass up on the chance of a brief sense of nostalgia. So as she lines up for the game, she slides her hand into the pocket of her jacket in search of her wallet just to check if she still has enough tokens for one game. But when her fingers brush nothing but fabric, her heart immediately skips a beat.

She tries checking her other pocket as well but she only finds her pink handkerchief and a small comb. Did someone snatch her wallet while she wasn’t looking?! Oh no, this can’t be happening. Everything she needs is in that wallet! She will never hear the end of it from her mother— 

A poke on her shoulder sends her jumping in surprise and she immediately looks back to find a young man handing her what she’s been looking for. Relief quickly washes over her and a bright smile spreads across her lips. Overwhelmed with delight, Shouko takes her wallet and gives the kind stranger a grateful hug— thanking him with an unintentional loud voice and an off-sounding pronunciation.

“…Hah?”

Ryuji leaned in closer to stare at the screen.

“Shouko…? Uuuuuuuhhhhh….. Ryuji?

Pointing to himself on the last word, he pauses briefly at the awkward reaction before giving out a deep sigh and dropping himself into a sitting position on a nearby sickbed.

“Y-Yeah, no problem… As if i was gonna leave you with a knock like that. Besides, it’s not my style to leave someone in need, right? …Geez lueez, Where the heck is this poser…?” 

He mutters a few more choice words under his breath, propping himself up with a single palm on the sheets. Not taking the silence well, he looks up to the girl.

“Y’sure your forehead’s okay? Was a pretty nasty hit, dude. Wouldn’t blame ya if you wanted to conk out for a couple of minutes while we wait for this prick…”

He falls silent for a moment, expecting some kind of response. He stares into the middle distance for a few seconds before his curious brown eyes flick to the girl, who seemed to be holding her phone close. “…Huh? You, ah… you can talk, right? You shy? O-or is that phone your uhhh..”

He trails off, making a difficult face, not breaking his gaze.

Shouko could only hope she read his lips right when he introduced himself. Ryuji, is it? Or was it Ryushi? Oh no, that just sounds silly. His name must be Ryuji then. Just as she’s about to type something else on her phone, she notices Ryuji sitting down on the bed nearby from the corner of her eye and she looks at him to realize that he’s still talking.

Unfortunately, she didn’t catch any of that.

But he also seems to have said a lot already that Shouko feels a bit awkward now to point out that she didn’t hear a word he just said. She looks down at her phone again, wondering if she should still type something to let him know that she’s deaf or just nod her head and pretend that she could understand him. The latter idea doesn’t seem very nice though. They will both look like idiots, wouldn’t they? Shouko doesn’t want to make him feel as such.

She looks back at him again and notices the uncertainty clouding his features. Did he just ask her a question? Shoot! She didn’t pick up on that either! There’s no way she could pretend that she heard him when he just asked an unknown question. Embarrassed, Shouko focuses back on her phone and types in her response. After a few more seconds, she brings the screen up for the blond to read again:

❝I’m so sorry but I didn’t catch any of that! 😫🙏 I was born with hearing impairment which is why I use my phone to communicate.❞

Aesop is starting to worry that perhaps he looks odd, or even suspicious, having been loitering around the shop for so long. But he didn’t mean to ‘loiter,’ it was just that… he didn’t actually know what he was thinking, coming here. He would like to get a nice bouquet, yes, and especially for this person, but… what did he know about arrangements? (or about gestures like this at all?) She knew plenty, but he was far too embarrassed to ask her about it, so he came alone.

He regrets it more by the moment, really. Though eventually, he does stop avoiding that he needs to ask for help… Looking around, he decides to make his attempt with a nice-looking girl he spots in the shop with him. She probably wouldn’t get mad or anything… right?

Cocking his head her direction, he starts, perhaps a bit too softly, “…Excuse me… Do you know how to make arrangements? Or is there someone else I should ask…?”

Shouko had been busy labeling their new sets of flowers when she feels a tap on her shoulder. She looks to her side and sees her co-worker gesturing to someone next to her with a hurried wave of their hand. 

Right away, Shouko diverts her gaze to her other side to find a customer appearing to be very hesitant about something. He isn’t the first nervous customer she’s expected to assist today and she’s certain that he won’t be the last. She doesn’t understand what is it about people being a bit embarrassed to ask her regarding anything that has to do with flowers but she’s more than happy to help them in any way she could.

An easy smile tugs the corners of her lips as she pulls her phone out of her pocket, her message already typed out for faster communication as she presents the screen to him:

❝Hello! My name is Shouko and I’d be happy to assist you today! Please understand that I have hearing impairment so if it’s not an inconvenience, I would be grateful if we could communicate through writing or sign language. If you don’t wish to be bothered by this, I could also ask someone else to assist you. Thank you very much!❞

She then hands him a pen and a notepad, gesturing to it for him to write down his response.

Forgetting to charge your electronics the night before, or having them almost dead will give any college student a gut-retching feeling. It’s not like Joe plans on using his phone and not pay attention to the lecture, it’s just that it’s nice knowing you could. At least he brought along his charger with him, and there was a decent amount of time remaining before his next class. Though, he didn’t expect there to be so many people in the library right now! It was almost impossible to find a proper seat! 

That’s when he saw an open power outlet, and somebody sitting at the table with it. He’d recognize her since they had a few classes, but it’s a bit embarrassing that he couldn’t remember her name.

“Do you mind if I sit here?” He spoke to her casually, of course he didn’t know she was deaf, and kind of mumbled a bit when he spoke.

Shouko looks up from the online article she has invested her attention in when she sees a classmate of hers approaching her. She doesn’t need to make him write down what he’s trying to say to know that he’s in need of a seat. The library is rather packed today and Shouko is quite glad that she arrived here hours earlier before the rest of them because she got the best table in the room, or at least it’s the best in her book.

She smiles at him anyway and gestures to the empty seat across from her. She then reaches down into her backpack to pull out a small pack of dried strawberries. Snacks and drinks are prohibited in the library but tiny snacks such as the one Shouko has doesn’t seem to bother the librarian as much as it should.

She then offers it to her classmate, her friendly smile still intact.

Shouko knows she isn’t a good singer. She spent a good majority of her childhood being told to shut up whenever she tried to carry a tune but still, who could deny that singing can often lift one’s spirits up? So here she stands, alone in the auditorium, imagining herself in a scenario where her voice doesn’t cause discomfort to others. She smiles at the empty seats and gives an almost theatrical bow. She then begins to sing. Loud. Her voice is but a muffled noise to her damaged hearing senses but for once, that is the least of her concerns. Once her song comes to a finish, she smiles and does another theatrical bow— but then she feels approaching footsteps lightly thumping the stage floor behind her.

She looks back over her shoulder to see a dark-haired stranger emerging from the backstage and Shouko finds herself rendered frozen in absolute embarrassment. Just how long has he been there?! Did he hear her poor attempt at singing?!

With another deep breath, Shouko makes another attempt to yank the large daikon out of the ground. She has been trying to pull the comically large vegetable for the past fifteen minutes but to no avail. She should have known better than to let it grow this big. It’s not like she’s signing up for the county fair! As always, her hands slip and she falls back down on her rear with a light oof!

She sighs and wipes a bead of sweat away from her face. She takes a gander at the greenhouse and spots a stranger walking past outside. He looks like he has the shoulders built for pulling overgrown radishes out of the ground! Quickly, Shouko stands back up on her feet and rushes out— waving her hand to catch his attention.

To say that she’s embarrassed would be an understatement. Having a volleyball hit her head in front of a large crowd is not just something she could shrug off, especially when the people who went to her team’s practice to watch had high expectations of the university’s volleyball team. Perhaps the only thing she’s grateful for in this whole ordeal is that someone was nice enough to walk her to the infirmary. Except, the university’s physician is out for a lunch break and now they’re just awkwardly waiting inside.

In an attempt to break the uncomfortable tension, Shouko fishes out her phone and thumbs in a message— pleased that typing down what she wants to say is keeping her occupied for a few seconds. She then presents the screen to her blond companion:

❝Thank you very much for assisting me here 🤗 I’m Shouko, by the way.❞

How in the world could she possibly explain this situation without looking silly? Shouko helplessly stares up at her bag where it can be seen hanging from the top branch of a tree that is just too tall for her to even have the courage to climb it. Oh dear, what a dilemma. She looks around in hopes of finding someone who might help her without asking the dreaded question: how did it get up there? Without a second thought, she opts for the nearest person she sees and steps in front of him before he could walk any further.

Shouko waves her hand at him in polite greeting before pointing at her backpack, hoping he could get the message that she’s in need of help.

Shouko knows that she shouldn’t be staring. Staring isn’t polite after all! But how could she resist taking a good look at the piercings adorning her classmate’s ears? Shouko has only ever seen such piercings on the internet and magazines— never up-close. They look so pretty and mesmerizing that she just couldn’t simply take her eyes away from them. Unfortunately, her state of awe has taken away her reflexes because the second her classmate catches her staring, she fails to immediately look away.

Shouko flinches in her seat, embarrassed. She quickly places her clenched hand on her chest and moves it in a circular motion in an attempt to express her apology for staring.

   When it comes to his precious succulents, their numbers were never enough! Despite having almost an entire balcony stocked full of various potted plants, Kisumi’s latest Bloomerang purchase spree was likely his biggest haul yet. The shop assistants had done their best to pack everything safely, but he’d grossly overestimated the upper body strength involved in lugging that much heavy pottery packed with soil around. The inevitable happens just as he’s a few feet past the threshold, his shoe catches on a jagged piece of pavement and out of his arms came flying the cardboard container, spilling his newest recruits all over the ground. 

   The sound of fragmenting ceramics as the pots smash into the asphalt below is an ear shattering one which prompts a reactive wince and then a woeful glance at his crushed, ruined plants.

“Oh shoot!”

“Careful there, don’t cut yourself on the broken bits.”

He warns, only now noticing a girl coming down the same path as the scene of carnage.

Shouko would usually head back to her dorm room around this hour due to her shift at Bloomerangs coming to an end but when she saw a familiar head of fluffy pink hair coming into the shop, she did what she does best. She hid. Her co-workers find her behavior amusing and perhaps a tad bit embarrassing but she couldn't help it! A boy that handsome is just too much for one heart to handle. Even after he had left, Shouko still stuck around the store just in case. By the time she was sure that he was completely out of the area, she finally picked up her bag and signed out of her shift.

But the chances of seeing the pretty boy are apparently higher than she thought because the second she nears her dorm room, she sees him again. And it appears he has made a mess of the potted plants he had bought earlier from the shop. Have they been living in the same dorm building all this time? Shouko wills herself to keep her state of panic buried deep inside of her. She knows that she should help him but that would mean being in his presence longer than she could handle. But she doesn’t want to come off rude by simply walking over the mess.

She steps closer and gestures to her door before making a sweeping motion with her hands, wordlessly offering him a broom that she keeps in her room.
