Just so everybody knows, I’m gonna be really spotty this weekend, because my mom is coming to my University for mom’s weekend and I’m going to be spending time with her.

    Garnet’s words come quietly, a trace of hurt in her tone    though she tries not to let it. She’d loved fusing with Rose,    on the rare occasion that it happened, and the fact that    she’s likely to never have that chance again twists and     pulls at her heartstrings. It isn’t something she allows     herself to think about often, to say the least.

     “Y.... N..... Mmm....” Garnet paused, then averted her       gaze with a frown. “...Sometimes.”

Do you ever watch Steven sleep for Pearl, since she asked you to since he asked her not to?

LET’S PLAY YES OR NO. 

       “...Yes.” The answer comes out with a tinge of embarrassment.       She really did want to respect Steven’s privacy, and she never       stayed to watch him for very long, but Steven just seemed so...       vulnerable when he slept. It was hard to resist checking in on        him, especially now that Pearl was supposedly not doing so.

“I dunno, it doesn’t look like nothin’.”

Garnet just stares at the other for a moment, then twists her wrist and teleports the bubbled gem to it’s rightful place back at the temple.

“It is now.”

“What the hell is that?”

“...Nothing.” 

It’s clearly not nothing, but Garnet’s really in no mood to explain herself.

For a moment, he’s sure she’s going to say no. And with everything that’s  happened he can’t exactly blame her — even if that’s exactly the reason he  needs this, the reason he can’t put off learning any longer. If there are gems  out there, if there’s anybody out there, who might hurt his family, what choice  does he have? Just sit and watch Garnet get hurt again? That’s not an option;  it never will be. 

A darker thought crosses his mind; she might just say yes and hold back. They’ve  done it before and while it hasn’t changed Steven’s love for any of them, not  at all, that might end up — bad. If he can’t use his shield right, if he can’t get a  handle on his magic —

No. That’s not going to happen. There’s too much at stake — too much he can lose if he doesn’t train. 

Steven meets her soft smile with a grin of his own, brimming with confidence  that he feels, he does — even if it’ll take a little while longer to get ride of each  of those doubts that have been haunting him for days. 

“Thank you, Garnet! I won’t let you down, I promise. The next time someone  messes with us, my shield’s gonna be even bigger and stronger, I know it.” 

He’s not his mom; he might not be able to command an army or use her sword  or — or hurt someone, but he can feel his trust for himself returning. If nothing  else, he still believes in the overflowing love he has for Garnet, and Amethyst and  Pearl and everyone in Beach City. 

“I know that you’ve been protecting me for a long time, and I’m really grateful,  I am! But I’m going to protect you too. And everyone. No one’s gonna get hurt  again.”
