I believe what hurt Lewis the most about 2016 was that Nico left afterwards because for Lewis it meant that Nico cut off the last bit that connected them and held them together - all the history and childhood dreams - because, apparently, he wanted nothing to do with Lewis anymore.

Lewis thought they could come back from 2016... Until Nico went and left the sport. Karting, racing, Formula 1 had been their thing - the sole base for their friendship. And Nico just left it all behind, like it didn't mean anything. He left Lewis.

And in an attempt to protect himself, Lewis decided that Nico had died for him just like Lewis, apparently, had died for Nico.

Nico went to live happily ever after while Lewis stood in the ruins of their friendship, of his childhood, of his- their dreams. And he is still fucking there!

You can't even say 'oh but it's been ten years' because everyone else makes sure that Lewis doesn't forget.

For one we have Nico who turns up all the time and reminds Lewis that everything did actually happen, that they have history, that no matter how hard he tries to ignore it, they share the same scars in the same places and their names are engraved next to each other into a trophy that Lewis is still chasing after!

And then they put him in front of a camera to guess mashed up faces and tell him "You know him well" or show him a video about his friendship with Nico and then they get to the tracks and they are in Spain and everybody talks about two silver arrows in the gravel, then they are in Austin and it's all about caps flying through cool down rooms, so yes. It have been ten years. But for all it's worth it could have only been one as well.
