Lmao yes,a lot of ppl mischaracterize him into a golden retriever guy who is always smiling and and does absolutely nothing in the book. Hes a very complex character and if you compare him to mae even more,hear me out:
Nelyo IS portrayed in the silm as a morally gray character,sometimes hes the good guy, sometimes hes the villian and you can see him fighting with that across the whole narrative. But finno is portrayed as a good guy,hes valiant and strong,and made a lot of good things but he has done bad things too. He followed Feanor when none of his family wanted,he persuaded Fingolfin to do so bc he wanted to see the unknow lands and rule a kingdom there. After Namo's words he and turgon are the ones who still wants to keep going,the text says:
"Furthermore,Fingon and Turgon were bold and fierce-hearted,and they hated abandoning any task they had begun before the bitter end,if bitter it was to be."
And this is after the kinslaying in wich,finno leads the march bc he thinks the Teleri were the ones attacking first. He is impulsive and this boy literally craves for battle. I mean he had his own special forces of mounted archers,he beats glaurung's ass with them,COMMON THATS NOT A SWEET BOY.
And then he just casually walks alone into morgoth's territory to save Nelyo,and you can see trough the silm that he is a feanorian supporter,even though at the moment of the oath he calls them fools. And before his death morgoth had a prize for his head,he doesnt do that to any other king and that alone speaks of how much morgoth hates him and wants him death. All of this makes him a grey character,bc he has made decitions that affected ppl in a negative way and he lives with it,he is seen as a hero and great leader and ppl forget that he is also a kinslayer,a pro feanorian guy,an elf that likes and seek for heroism.
