Hey HOTD fans,
Get the fuck out of our dæmonism tag. "Daemonism" is not some religion worshiping Matt Smith in a blonde wig. Tag your shit with Daemon Targareyan so we can stop seeing it in our HDM Dæmon and Dæmonism tags. Respect tag etiquette and kindly fuck off.
How tf do sports work with daemons. Like, do all athletes have to have daemons who can keep up with them in their given sport, and if you're an aspiring track star and settle as a tortoise you're shit out of luck? If you're a swimmer with a daemon that can't swim? I guess some sports you could worldbuild around, like courts being overall smaller/thinner so that no one is ever at the edge of their range, but I'm struggling to imagine a world where "let's see who can run/swim/ski the fastest" isn't something that would have evolved.
Idk, in HDM people settle younger than I think they would irl, so maybe you just. Don't expose your child to sports until they settle so they can't get really committed to one and then suddenly not be able to do it? That doesn't make a lot of sense though. Kids like to run and throw ball.
The only other thing I can think of is like a transport system or something where someone' job is to just drive a golf cart next to the track with the slow daemons loaded inside.
Long term followers may remember that back in 2020 I decided that I was going to fulfil a long term desire of mine to illustrate my copy of Northern Lights. It was a huge under taking, illustrating all 23 chapters and a second bonus design for chapter 3. As part of that I also designed a front cover, which I was incredibly proud of and included an Alethiometer that, through symbols, explained the whole story of the trilogy.
This year, however, I decided to decorate my office with more of my art, and as part of that I wanted to make a poster version of my Northern Lights cover. With 5 year's worth of experience, and much bigger paper (and significantly better quality watercolour paper at that) I have managed to create something that, while maintaining the same feel as the original, far better depicts it in a way that I am incredibly proud.
In particular I love the truly tiny details I managed to include, like Lyra, Pan, Roger and Salcilia walking on the Oxford roof, and how much clearer I was able to draw the Alethiometer symbols. I really liked how in the original, the 4 sections at the bottom showing the locations of the novel had their own vibes, with Bolvanger in particular giving a clear feeling of Dread. I am also so much happier with the Aurora and seeing Cittagazze shimmering through. I used the city scape that I designed for my Subtle Knife cover to tie the designs together better as well.
I truly can't wait to get it framed and up on my wall, and I hope you all enjoy it too.

Prince Lyre and his beloved ferret Milord
the THING about Lord Asriel (from His Dark Materials/Golden Compass) is he's a main character. He's the chosen one/leading the armies of every single world/video game protagonist/man who's going to save everybody.
BUT he's also a kid abandoner. He ditched his daughter. Both of these things are true.
And he's surrounded by the Good guys. Good people. Rebels, witches, other fathers.
So it's SO funny when people come rushing to him and are like um hey?? There's a magical girl out there and everyone is trying to kill her should we do something??
And all of the other good guys are like whoa of course right, that's what we do, Lord Asriel has risked his life for me, a STRANGER, he would do anything for the people around him- surely he'll save this girl and they get to watch him go urrrrrrk.
He's ANNOYED. He rolls his eyes.
And they're like ??????? Who is this girl????
And he's like it's whatever it's my daughter.
And they're like your WHAT!?
It's so funny that he thinks it's not even a faux pas. He thinks these people (people he collected because they ARE GOOD they are Caring, Loving people) would not be disturbed at all by that. He doesn't even see it as a character flaw he's just like yeah the church has a nuke to murder my kid- I don't give a shit- now back to saving children because I am a good and noble man who must save all children- it's CRAZY. There is a schism in his mind, in his character it's so compelling.
It's like you're watching transformers and Optimus Prime out of nowhere says yeah guess I got a kid and I abandoned them- and the mother is Megatron and megatron is actually a Better parent then me. Anyways I won't answer anymore questions about it, let's go team-
never not thinking about iorek byrnison eating lee scoresby's dead body, so as not to let it rot but instead allow it to sustain an old friend on his journey. and how this act fulfilled lee's dying wish to help lyra by giving iorek the strength to go on and find her. thinking about consumption as a form of love, loving someone in their entirety and wanting to eat them whole but also love and grief being something you carry inside of you that guides you forward
His dark materials is so funny. It starts out like “oh no, my best friend is missing! Let’s go on an adventure to find him!” and two books later they’re going “let’s start a multi universal war and kill god”. And they’re twelve.

what's really special about his dark materials is that there are so many heroes in the story who are trying to fulfil a prodigious goal, or are motivated by a higher power, but the most important change is brought about by a little girl with a wicked ability to lie, a boy who hates fighting and a random physicist who climbs trees and whose main power lies in her use of words
She felt dizzy, even in her dream; she felt a great burden settle on her shoulders. And to make it even heavier, sleep was closing in again, and Roger’s face was receding into shadow.
She sat beside Will, and her eyes never left Pantalaimon, who stood trembling at the shore end of the jetty... watching, just watching, as the boat drew away and the jetty faded and vanished in the mist.
HIS DARK MATERIALS 3.02 | 3.04
His Dark Materials has such a beautiful depiction of love, because in the end love is what saves every world, but the rest of the series is almost a lesson in all the things love can’t save. Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter loved Lyra, but it doesn’t stop them from abandoning her and using her as a pawn in their respective schemes. They loved each other but it doesn’t stop them from manipulating and hurting each other, and it doesn’t save them in the end. Lyra loved Roger but it doesn’t stop her from getting him killed, and it doesn’t bring him back. Will and Lyra loved each other, but it doesn’t stop their separation. John Parry loved Will and his mother, but he still left them. Lyra loved Pan, but she still left him behind in the world of the dead. There’s no absence of love, but it’s not the cure all other books often make it out to be. The love is there, but it doesn’t change anything. And yet in the end it’s Will and Lyra’s love for each other that saves every world. It’s Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter’s love for Lyra (and each other) that lets them defeat Metatron. In a series where love has consistently failed to save the character, two of the most important and seemingly impossible feats are accomplished solely through love. And yes that means that the story inherently contradicts itself, but that’s what I love so much about it. Love is by nature contradictory. The point of the story isn’t to show that love is all powerful or that love achieves nothing. The point is that love doesn’t usually doesn’t solve anything, but that we should continue to love, and that every now and then, love truly will save it all.
I don't know how much other people have talked about this sort of thing, but part of why I connected so much with dæmonism was because it really helped me deal with my self deprecating thoughts.
By viewing yourself as also a separate self, it makes it harder to say/think negative things. You're not just insulting yourself, you're also insulting your dæmon who is a part of you.
I'd catch myself being negative about myself and pause because I'd feel guilty. And while it's kinda a silly motivation for it, it was a really important step in working on improving my mental health.
