Remembering Nirvana’s ‘Unplugged’: Cobain’s Battles Nearly Pulled Plug on Classic Appearance Nirvana taped their appearance on MTV Unplugged 20 years ago this week, resulting in the most memorable episode of that venerable franchise, as well as what's generally regarded as one of rock's best live albums ever. After Kurt Cobain died five months later, this unusually quiet turn for the band became even more beloved, as [...]
As someone who identifies as gay, I remember growing up and going to the bookstore and going to the gay and lesbian section and thinking to myself, “This is it. This is what we have. This one shelf. That’s it.” And, you know, we have some short stories, and we have some history, and stuff like that, but you know, like, the fiction all centered around being gay. Like, it was defined by that. And so, I think what I hear a lot from the fans, and I share their sentiment, is, here is something where being gay is just one aspect of a much larger world that we live in. And that world is beautiful, and terrifying, and insane, and funny, and it just fits in there, and for me, being a gay artist, working on a show like this, like, I like gay stuff, gay stuff is cool, but I mean, you know, so many times I see independent films and and independent books and they’re writing the “Oh, this is gay fiction.” Well, what does that mean? Like, does that mean you have to be gay to read it? Do you have to be gay to write it? Like what? I don’t understand…Like, just one aspect of Cecil is his sexuality. And, on top of that, in this crazy world of Night Vale, his sexuality and his relationship with another man is the least weird thing to happen on a daily basis. And it really makes me feel so good to think back on where I was when I was like fifteen, sixteen and thinking “Yes, this is it.” Like, we’re making it. We’re pushing boundaries out, and saying, “This isn’t a gay podcast. We’re not gonna check your card at the door.” I love that.
Cecil Baldwin (via theopoiesis) This makes a really valid point. I have read some "Gay Fiction" in my time and the one thing I always saw was how centric it seemed on the sexual aspect of it. Being Gay is so much more than that though. They are people, just like Heterosexuals and pan-sexuals are. I would like to see fiction, or even non-fiction where the MC is gay or is somehow involved in the Community but that isn't the defining aspect of their entire lives. Its one detail, one strand that is woven together with a million other strands to created a beautiful tapestry that is that person.
30 Covers, 30 Days: Day 4
Today’s cover was designed by Thy Doan, and inspired by participant Jason Black:
Freight Train Bennie and the Gold Run by Jason Black
During the Great Depression, a 12-year-old boy leaves home so his parents have one less mouth to feed. Soon he finds himself in a new life, riding the rails as a hobo with a new name, “Freight Train”.
There, he meets another “road kid” who goes by Shackle, and turns out to be a girl in hiding. As Freight Train is leaving his family behind, he learns Shackle is on a journey to re-unite with hers. That is, if she can stay out of the clutches of the menacing “Jungle Buzzard” hobo known as Sidetrack, who also knows Shackle’s secret, and isn’t above taking advantage.
Together, Freight Train and Shackle make their way across America, struggling to stay one step ahead of the railroad officers, and one train ahead of Sidetrack.

I have a powerful need for The Graveyard book to become a movie so I can stop having to prove to people that Scarlett was black.
Or wait is this why writers spend half a fuckin chapter mentioning someone’s race/background? I’ve always hated that but I guess if you take the…
There is truth to stereotypes, but this does not mean that somebody should feel pressured to follow one because it’s what society says they should do. A christian gay does not have to become agnostic. A femme does not have to become butch just to be seen as a lesbian (an issue known as Femme Invisibility). A masculine straight girl should not have to prove that she is straight by becoming feminine!
Stereotypes are not a tool for you to find out somebody’s sexuality or gender identity.
THIS IS WHAT ANARCHY LOOKS LIKE.
Hope for the future.
This kid is incredible.
This makes me incredibly happy.
Look at what miraculously positive things result from people thinking for themselves! Who would have thought!?!?!
