This 8-9 ft man was supposedly found in an ancient burial ground. According to the original 1895 article about it, it was found in a cave with a hood over the head, not a burial mound.
The Scientist who is claimed to have investigated it was Dr Thomas Wilson of the Smithsonian, and there was indeed a Dr Thomas Wislon in the late 1800s who was a chair of the Smithsonian who specialized in native american remains and burial mounds.
There are several sources who make the claim that Wilson purchased it from it’s owners for $8500 while it was on tour in San Diego. Upon further investigation, it was found to be a hoax made of gelatin. (Source)
