Did you know that after they switched to blind auditions, major symphony orchestras hired women between 30% to 55% more? Before bringing in “blind auditions” with a screen to conceal the the candidate, women in the top 5 major orchestras made up less than 5% of the musicians performing.

so I believe it was actually more complicated than that, in interesting ways. Because at first, when they did blind auditions, they were STILL hiring more men.

…Then they put down a carpet, so that high heels didn’t clack on the floor,  and BOOM women were suddenly getting hired.

The testers didn’t even know that’s what they were picking up on, which just goes to show how tiny of a cue it takes for misogyny to kick in.

The case of blind auditions for orchestras and how it dramatically changed the gender makeup of orchestras is a very illuminating example of gender bias, and an interesting possible way of countering it.

What you don’t usually hear about when discussing this blind audition process is that after the blind auditions were implemented, when women had gotten many positions in the orchestra, men no longer saw being a member as prestigious and the salaries for the entire orchestra dropped.

This reminds me of a case study in Sweden in 2021 (in the book “Can We Change Our Minds?” by Jessica Nordell). After analysing and testing a number of interventions, the thing that stopped gender stereotypy at a Swedish pre-school was not just avoiding gendered presentations of things. It required treating all children the same way (allowing only for individual differences of need). This resulted in removing stereotypy and having all children be confident and curious about all aspects of their lives, regardless of gender. This difference persisted into school, despite the school not being part of the experiment for any purpose except continued evaluation. (Thankfully, no meta-misogyny/machoism occurred as a result of this).

has anyone noticed that after the porn ban of 2018 tumblr was essentially killed from the mainstream and everyone flocked to other social media sites like twitter and meta. then those sites got enshittified to where twitter became Nazi Central and meta sites had an entire meme around getting “zucced” aka mark zuckerberg himself would ban you for saying a no-no word like fuck. and then the mainstream shifted to tiktok where infamous toddlerspeak sentences like “he got unalived by a pew pew” were born because if you once again say a no-no word like kill or gun or any other word that isn’t corporate i mean kid friendly then the algorithm will bury your post into the ground. and somehow we’ve come full circle and tumblr is now the most bearable social media site because although we can’t have female presenting nipples we can at least talk to each other like adults. has anyone noticed that at all or is it just me and the flaming skull

Pros of AI: my landlord that im sueing is using AI for his defense instead of hiring a lawyer (despite having the money to do so) and it is fabricating laws that don't exist which im told is not great in the eyes of the court, so maybe ill win :D

Fundamentally the problem with the "bad boy" is that he is always also bad to you. The character traits, personality traits that make them deviant and aggressive are distributed globally. You think, "Oh, surely he has the discipline and self-control to only ever lash out at deserving targets! I, the woman, will be categorically spared such treatment! Because deep down he's got the right values!" BZZZZT! Wrong!

I'm not allowed to play paladin with one of my playgroups anymore, because the last time I did, one of the rogues in my party decided kill a townsperson in front of me "just to see what would happen," and the moment she did I used a smite evil and killed her instantly. Everyone else (except the DM) thought it was a dick move that I basically forced her to roll an entirely new character after one night.
