Watching your favourite movies with someone who has to nitpick every little tiny detail is a kind of pain i wouldn't wish on anyone

I like the original "Hostel" movie, but everyone always talks about how it's meaningless gore and torture with no theme, and it makes me feel stupid, because i always read it as survivor's guilt story

Paxton feels guilty that he brought Josh on this trip, he feels guilty he couldn't save his friends because by the time he found them they were already dead. And when he hears Kana, the random girl he told to stay at the hostel and wait for him, scream in pain from inside the facility, he blames himself for her getting caught and goes back in to save her, and though he gets her out he still can't save her from the trauma and she ends up killing herself in front of him.

Am i reading too much into it? Am I fucking stupid?

Extremely cold take on my part, but a the scary stories to tell in the dark movie would have been improved 1000% if they just filmed it like an anthology, because that whole "you're a coward for dodging the draft even though they sent your brother back home from the war in a body bag" thing weird as fuck

Just scrap the main story, you can keep the actors, no need to change the editing style or sfx or anything, have a group of friends telling stories around a campfire or at a sleepover, or maybe make some sort of witch or monster telling stories to the audience, to act as a bumper between each story, don't be afraid to get a little "tales from the crypt" with it
