hoshina is the first one to explicitly thank kafka, not kaiju no. 8, for saving the third division back then and i couldn't be more grateful to him. kafka really needed to hear those words, even more so in the moment he doubted his worth again. indeed, the vice-captain is always kinder than anyone (i say this remembering his acts of kindness during his day off)

after seeing a thousand posts about how hoshina looks really good in compression shirt (which is a fact), and how the intensity of his aura matches his competency in hand to hand combat and swordsmanship (which is not a lie), i think there is an obvious lack of posts about how hoshina soshiro, in the simplest terms, is such a good man.

imagine, this is the same vice-captain who saluted kafka, when majority of the anti-kaiju officers doubted kafka's humanity. i think it takes a hell lot of respect for someone with such a high authority to be humble enough and acknowledge that a mere officer, who barely passed the entrance exam, and a goddamn kaiju, saved him and the lives of everyone in the third division.

and it might be easy to say that hey, maybe hoshina is just really nice. but that's just the thing - hoshina soshiro is not nice, he doesn't mince words, doesn't sugarcoat his criticisms. what hoshina soshiro is kind: he knows how it feels to be powerless thus he took initiative in training kafka - even advised the guy to relay on his own strength, not just his kaiju powers.

not even gonna include how wholesome his activities are even during his days off work.

I’ve been trying to decipher why I like Kaiju No.8 so much. I don’t know anyone else into it so I’m gonna cook on here.

I haven’t read the manga but I watched it a couple months ago and became utterly bewitched. I’ve kinda come up with a few basic ideas but nothing that really goes “ah yes there it is.”

I'm going to get the obvious out of the way. I love giant monsters and shounen/battle anime. I'm just big into that when theres friendship and a banger fight scene riddled with feelings.

1. 95% of the cast is adults

Now I love it when kids go on journeys of self discovery and identity. Hell many things I want to write is that. But adults can go through those journeys too and it’s refreshing to see an of age cast do the self discovery thing as mature people. When the main girl is 27 I cheered! Anime could use more of this

2. It feels homey.

Which is weird to say because I feel like I don’t care about most characters. But I think Kaiju No.8 does a good job at showing communities and their impact. The clean up crew all felt like they knew Kafka and though not close relationship there is a bond of care. They wanted him to feel ok with himself as well as succeed.

Then we have squad 3. Highkey I don’t believe that the main characters of that group are all friends. It’s yet again another instance of co-workers which I’m pretty fond of? Everyone has their pairs like Reno and Iharu, Mina and Hoshina, Aoi and Haruichi, Shinomiya and her two friends, and the familial dynamic between Kafka and his two kids Reno and Shinomiya. Those guys are friends. But lets put together lets say Iharu and Kafka. They've got respect for each other and they seem kind to one another but thats like it? Yet the whole squad is depressed and feels the need to level up once Kafka gets found out as Kaiju No. 8. Lets go COMMUNITY lets go CO-WORKERS. I fully believe these people would have lunch together then go home in their respective pairs!!!!

Unpacking all this actually helped me find the core. I think this series is be about people vying to be more than themselves without changing who they are. And I think the different age demographics help push the narrative. No matter how old you are or where you are in your life you can still pursue your goals and become your best self.

HUH, and it's modern setting and co-worker dynamics really tailor to that. Anyway, can't wait to keep watching S2!

YES and i find it soooo entertaining for some reason (im hundred percent sure it's bc most of em are adults). totally one of the good shows i watched this year!
