I swear if Cynthia and Ariana were alive back in the day, we would study their encounters in present day swearing they were lovers but just couldn’t be out back then.

Talking as someone who love Gelphie, I believe that a good chunk of the people thinking Gelphie should have been endgame and/or are hating on Fiyero for getting with Elphaba are only thinking of it from Ginda's side of things.

Because yes Gelphie would be every little bit the happy ending she wants, she's getting to have Elphaba, peace, and power (if we keep her growth/access to the grimery at the end of the movie). She'd literally be getting everything she wanted so of course it would be the best ending for her.

But if you look at things from Elphaba point of view, the only way for her to end up with Glinda (in Canon) would be for her to give up on her morale code. She would have to compromise herself and her belief ( join the wizard side, or get her name cleared at the cost of Glinda and/or the animals) which is something she would never do. (and if she ever did she would never have been truly happy with that decision) Just like Glinda couldn't let go of her position in the regime hunting Elphaba until she had lost everything.

So no Gelphie could not have happened because Elphaba would not compromise herself like that and Glinda wouldn't give up her social position. The movie could never have ended with the two of them happy together
