can do you headcanons for sick nick and judy please?
like sick to the point where they pass out (fever, throwing up)
thank youuuu
thank u sm for another question!!
Wildehopps headcanons: sick edition!
Judy!
As frequently seen in the fandom, i believe Judy would refuse to believe she’s sick– or even be totally oblivious to it. instead, she’d just go about her day, maybe take some painkillers in the morning, chug some water, and go to work.
That is, until the 'big sickness' comes in.
She wakes up one day, dizzy, boiling hot, sweaty, barely able to see. at first she’s in a flurry, terrified that she’d caught some rare disease and she’s going to die in the next few days. yet after a phone call with her mom, it turns out it’s just the common influenza.
Ignoring her mothers insistence to drive six hours and come take care her of her, Judy insists she’ll take it easy for the day, hoping it’ll clear up in time for work.
Obviously, this will be quite difficult for the usually hyperactive and excitable bunny. but alas, she knows it’s for the greater good, besides the last thing she’d want is to get Nick sick. so she rests for the day, sleeps, scrolls Pinterest, TikTok, and Instagram all in an effort to get better by Monday.
it does nothing– in fact it gets worse.
It’s so bad to the point where Judy knows she’ll have to call in sick tomorrow. so she does, explaining her situation, to the ZPD and her foxy partner, leaving Nick in a state of sheer panic. I mean, Judy admitting she can't work- surely she must be on death's door!
So the second that clock hits 5pm, Nick dashes out to grab his partner anything he can (food, medication, fluffy pillows, etc) and shows up at Judy's door, demanding to be of help.
So after a few days of rest, alongside Nick's constant care, attention, and nursing, Judy recovers back to her bubbly and optimistic self, full with newfound admiration and love for her partner.
Nick!
In my opinion, considering Nick's past, i feel like he would be conditioned to ignore sickness. This is purely because a day off work is a day without pay- and Nick couldn't afford that.
So he's used to ignoring symptoms, masking off-days, and pushing on.
Yet when it comes to the ZPD and getting paid sick-leave, best believe that Fox is jumping at any opportunity to call off work. (jokingly... of course...) a sore wrist? deadly. growing pains? fatal. a slight bump on the head? call the ambulance!
At least, that's what the Fox initially thought... that was until he realised that time off work meant time away from Judy.
Thus, Nick finds himself ignoring every past terminal illness for the sake of seeing his partner.
Until one day, the sickness is genuinely too much. Nick can hardly see- let alone walk. so whilst standing on death's door, he very very reluctantly calls in sick, without so much as a word to Judy out of pure nausea.
Spending the day sleeping, lounging, and watching TV would've been past-Nick's dream come true. yet the current-day Fox found himself longing for the mounds of paperwork and stakeouts. deep down, Nick knew it was because he was missing a certain bunny.
So imagine his surprise when an impromptu knock on his door and the scent of warm soup wakes him from his slumbers. of course his partner would turn up after a long day of making the world a better place in order to care for others- that selfless bunny! was this a dream?
Ignoring Nick's protests about contagious diseases and overly sensitive bunnies, Judy promptly whips up her homemade "get well soon" soup on the stove alongside some comforting tea. it seems that his partner had fully fledged herself into "Mom-mode" (not that he was complaining...)
It was only after he had finished dinner, when Judy had launched into a full hour-by-hour recap of the day's events and made herself very comfortable and at home, that Nick realised she was staying the night.
So together they begin a new routine: Judy waking first, preparing two breakfasts and coffees, before leaving for work. Judy returning in the evening, preparing two dinners and teas, the daily recap, repeat.
The cycle continues until, slowly, Nick begins to feel himself again, and he is finally able to join in on the early starts.
He's pleased that Judy won't be alone on the force (though a part of him wishes he could drag out this illness for just a little longer...)
Mainly, Nick learns that he was wrong; it is possible to fall more in love with Judy.
Thank you for your question! i'm sorry it took so long but alas it is here; i hope it lived up to the anticipation. feel free to ask any more questions.
hellooooo sorry for the disappearance i've been mega busy behind the scenes with life.
But fear not! during my hiatus i've been putting together my new one-shot! I’m super excited to announce after a 6 month WIP process, my fic “wanna bet on it?” is out now!! An 11.4k word ficin which Nick and Judy make a bet involving a… personality swap?
“So what exactly are we betting on here?” Judy questioned suspiciously.
Nick shrugged “You claim you're twice as good at my nickel worthy jokes and that’s it’s my entire personality, let’s put it to the test then.”
“Okay…” Judy said hesitantly. “So what you’re getting at is… a personality swap?”
“Right.” Nick sat upright. “You. Me. Acting as each other. Whoever goes the longest is the winner.”
OR
an extended one-shot in which Judy is determined to win their little bet.
fic inspired by the Victorious episode “Sleepover at Sikowitz”, the Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse episode “don’t bet on it!”, and finally the Wednesday season 2 episode 6! (aka the body-swap episode)
posts, uploads, and questions will resume from this point onwards. Thank you for your patience :>
Out of the pair, i feel like Judy definitely uses Instagram more frequently. Firstly, for practical reasons, such as keeping in touch with her family and friends. but also Judy just seems like an avid story-poster and social media user in general. she’d definitely just love posting her daily coffees, morning runs, ootd (outfit of the day), morning routines etc, which accumulated into quite a big fanbase!
After the reptile case i feel like Judy would start doing more “photo dumps” just bc it’s easier to just post a bunch of stuff in one go. (she is a busy bunny afterall!)
In terms of her photo dumps, i included pawpsicles for when they celebrated at Gary’s house (but also i think Nick and Judy just genuinely eat pawpsicles) as well this, i think she'd just post everyday pics or monthly dumps of her and Nick. (yep, that’s them on a definitely-not-a-coffee-date!)
Furthermore, she’d probably write complete essays of a caption to include and explain everything going on with her life. like seriously over 400 words.
In concern with the highlights, i like to think that “life <3” is just a bunch of aesthetic photos from behind the scenes of cases and police work. yet to Judy’s complete oblivion; it also happens to also be filled with Nick! thus it gives a very strong impression of a boyfriend highlight…🤭🤭 (not that she’s aware lol)
Nick’s Instagram was pretty fun to create. he’d definitely be more of a “random post here and there” type guy and barely checks or uses instagram; he claims he’s “against social media”. (yet as i stated in my previous post, miraculously he is able to like every single one of Judy’s posts/stories…)
Overall, Nick’s page is much less curated; he simply posts whatever he likes the look of. but i think he’d post the Zootennial gala suit just out of sheer pride, captioned: i brush up quite nicely, huh?
furthermore, i added a little mug of Judy there bc he’d definitely love posting them to her utter dismay.
But ofc, similar to his apartment, his most important and valued post (hence the pin!) is the one with him and Judy, aww how cute. personally i think he’d like this particular picture as it shows them together, both in uniform, as the “Dreamteam!”
A noticeable aspect is of Nick's page is that he has more followers than Judy (over 100k to be exact!). although in reality, i believe Judy would probably be more well known and thus have more followers, another half of me thinks that because Nick gives off this “nonchalantly cool” persona. this would get him a bunch of followers (from teens but also from interested vixens 🙀). Furthermore i like the idea that Nick would constantly tease Judy about being more “popular” than her, so it works out!
A another noticeable aspect is that Nick also follows way more people than Judy (152k) this was purely out of the whole “i know everybody” thing.
lmk if u enjoyed this!
(i do not own any of the photos and they all belong to the original owners on Pinterest!)
what are some headcanons you have for wildehopps overworking themselves?
thank you sm for another question! i LOVE answering these!
WildeHopps Headcanons: burn out edition!
okay let's split this up and start with the easy one first:
1. Judy!
Judy definitely struggles with burnout frequently- she's constantly on the go and desperate to prove herself by taking on tasks way too big for a bunny her size. As well as this, she's quite prone to becoming emotionally invested in her cases- taking failures to the heart.
(In fact, i wouldn't be surprised if we see her struggling with burnout in the third film, although how that fits in with their new bird case.. i'm not sure, so perhaps not? considering she's solved the two largest cases of the year in one year)
On a more everyday-basis concerning burnout, she would probably get caught up in her cases, run on like 4 hours of sleep, but be totally unaware it's affecting her physically and mentally until one day everything just comes crashing down. (she'd also probably feel pressure from her family to uphold this happy-go-lucky persona, in order to not stress them out).
This would result in her making silly mistakes at work, but one day this comes back to bite her. One day, she makes one small mistake and it snowballs into something massive. Bogo would get mad, Nick would get mad, because she's clearly overworked but being stubborn, and she'd have a breakdown.
After this, she would probably receive some sort of counselling, paid time off, and have a self realisation again (like we see in the second film) that being vulnerable is okay.
Here's my take on addressing the elephant in the room: wouldn't Nick intervene before it gets to this point?
Yes and no.
Whilst I believe he would definitely be aware that something's up with her, i would argue he would not force anything out of Judy, nor demand an answer... yet (as we'll see later in this answer).
Whilst the events of Z2 do show they promised to communicate better, this type of change doesn't happen overnight! i believe Judy is the type to need some sort of harsh reality check; she is more of a learn-from-your-mistakes-and-improve type of person due to her throw caution to the wind approach. Thus, by realising that her mistakes not only impact Nick, but also the rest of the mammals around her, and undoubtably her job, she would recognise the importance communication and burn out.
So how would she handle burnout? personally, i see her as a puzzle book lover- she can get wrapped up in something but in the sake of leisure instead. i also think she'd like to do long runs in the park listening to Gazelle.
But mainly, i think she'd spend her time with Nick (obv) hanging out at his place, going out to dinner, or just doing other stuff other than work. I'd like to think one of the ways they'd cope together is just exploring the city, since Judy is still relatively new to Zootopia.
2. Nick!
I think it's easy to write off Nick as someone who isn't stressed easily- which is to a certain extent true, he's a very laid back character - however i also believe he is, or was, quite prone to burnout too.
Let me explain.
We know that Nick was on his own for most of his life. This meant that he had to think, plan and carry out his hustles, all whilst avoiding the law and putting food on the table. That's quite a lot for a young fox! so he definitely had moments of burnout trying to juggle all these things at once.
At some point though, things probably settled a little with the purchase of his apartment and he had some level of stability in his life. Especially with the addition of Finnick, who i headcanon that he met in his 20s, bc then at least he had someone to lean on. Plus he was making 200 bucks a day, so financially he was doing alright.
Emotionally however? probably not so good. Whilst before his burnout was mainly economically concerned and hustle based- he now probably suffers from the fact that for over 20 years, he's never had anyone to truly confide in. He's became a master at masking his emotions, but at what cost?
In concern with how i think he'd cope with his burnout, unfortunately i think he'd turn to alcohol (not an alcoholic per se, but definitely overdoing it more than once in the week), mainly because it's something quick and easy to access. Additionally he wouldn't be doing it totally alone- he would have Finnick and they'd probably make a night out of it. But most importantly, he'd be able to pour his heart and soul out to drunken ears, without facing the consequences afterwards or admitting he was vulnerable.
Life for Nick just became a matter of cruising through life, detached, emotionless, stable- but never truly happy...
until Judy comes along.
Now Nick feels lighter than he's ever felt in over 20 years- he's reached a new level of stability he didn't know existed. Thus, he's the least burnt out ever.
As well as this, Nick realises the importance of staying balanced because, deep down, he knows Judy depends on him between the two of them. Thus, he makes jokes, says comments, and riles up Bogo to distract her for a moment, because he knows she needs it. Nick takes on the unbothered, laid-back, and unstressed Fox out of personal choice this time, rather than it being forced upon him.
Furthermore, he grows more confident in himself (not just in ego!); he's aware that Judy depends on him, thus he's aware of how he needs to be the voice of reason and step up when needed. Nick would learn to trust his gut instinct and not trust Judy when her actions and character are clearly off.
Altogether i think they'd have another long talk about trusting each other, being truthful, hug, make up, and promise to never shut each other out.
i hope u enjoyed that! feel free to send any more questions! 😸
If you ship wildehopps romantically, how do you think their first kiss would go?
great question, thanks for asking! i actually have two/three answers to this.
How I think Wildehopps will happen in Zootopia 3!
1. The Realistic Version
Unfortunately, this is the more “lowkey” version of how i think it will happen. but do NOT LET THIS DESTROY YOUR HOPELESS ROMANTIC DREAMS, i pray that they give us more than this for my own mental health🙏.
Because the directors have been reluctant to admit (or even confirm!) that Nick and Judy are potentially more than friends, or that even one of them have caught feelings, (but we ALL know Nick fell first) i believe they will “address it” without evening “addressing it”.
let me explain.
okay picture this, it’s the end credits of the most amazing zootopia film in the history of disney. the banter was there, the plot was there, the flirtation was there.
we see the end credits rolling in normal fashion: the gazelle concert. everyone’s jamming around, Gazelle is performing, the vibes are immaculate.
we get the little zoom of Nick and Judy for their voice actor credits, they’re dancing around having a great time…. when…
woah!
Judy all of a sudden pulls Nick down by the tie so he’s tilting slightly and presses a kiss to his cheek.
yeah you heard me CHEEK not lips (😾).
Nick pulls the 😳🫣🤭
and then the camera cuts away to the next main character and their credits.
why? because if Disney is so reluctant to confirm anything, this is the easiest way to “confirm” to the fans, whilst also keeping it vague enough for the wider audience.
2. The Middle Ground
this next potential scene would ideally follow the “realistic” version, or could stand alone, depending on how brave Disney is feeling.
it would be an end of credits scene.
why? It would follow the formula that we saw in z2 with Judy and the carrot pen- it was an announcement to the fans.
this would be a short scene involving Nick and Judy going home after the concert- it’s nighttime, we see the glowing city lights and the atmosphere is calm.
Nick and Judy are walking together back to their apartments. they stop at the place where they part, right under the glowing light of a streetlight.
the camera is set at a far away distance so just their silhouettes are visible: Judy leans in, Nick leans in. you get the picture.
screen fades to black.
this is a nice, lowkey version, made for the fans for that warm comfy end of a movie feeling.
personally i would rather this scene NOT act as a standalone and would rather it follow on the from the realistic version. just because it would give some closure to the film and would seem sort of random. but hey, if disney is reluctant to pair them in the actual film this may be the next best confirmation.
3. The Ideal
okay THIS is the one we’ve all been waiting for, where my little fanfic heart can pour out her endless hopes and dreams for a canon wildehopps moment. i admit, this part took me the longest to think of which is why this post is so late, my apologies!
this is the most realistic and ideal way i can think of disney confirming their relationship.
It's the Gazelle concert (again) and ending to the third movie. the whole film is FILED with will-they-won't-they moments and we're on the edge of our seats on whether they will confirm it or not. most notably, i feel like there would be a moment of very very close confession, like in the weatherwall scene, but somehow it's interrupted or unresolved perhaps just to keep us on our toes.
for this, there are two gazelle songs released for this film: one upbeat and classic pop tune, the other? a little more softer and romantic? which we find out only WHEN we're watching it. (they kept it a secret for max effect) picture "sky full of stars" type song.
we zoom into both of them giving each other those wide-lovey eyes. they smile. discuss their unresolved moment. the chorus builds. the lights strobe. the camera cuts to slow-motion
then WHAM chorus hit and they KISS.
and yeah.
OR we get another heat of the moment confession, which ends in a kiss- cue orchestra and screaming.
either way i'm sat!
i hope this answers ur question, lmk what y'all think! and i bet you i'll change my answer after reading the comments lmao.
The FINAL chapter of parenting is out now! chapter six!
“Okay, let's start then.” Judy paused. “What were you doing tonight?”
Nick made a noise between a scoff and a chuckle, finding her formality bizarre.
This felt awfully like the interrogation room back in the Precinct.
“Gee i dunno, having afternoon tea with the ladies,” he huffed sarcastically, hoping to break the rigidity with some humour.
He was never one for formality.
Judy felt her paws clench. “Seriously?” Clearly, this was some big joke to him. Clearly, her feelings apparently didn't matter.
“What do you think, Carrots?” He gave her a look, tilting his head.
‘This damn Fox!’ Judy cursed internally, dodging her questions!
this officially brings the end to my first ever multi-chapter fic! woohoo! i wanted to thank u guys for ALL the support through kudos, comments or anything. it actually means so much to me!!
fear not!! i have a super exciting extended one shot coming soon which is gonna be amazing. so look out for that!
due to the popularity of my last post, i thought i’d follow it up with my SECOND favourite scene in zootopia, because i fear this scene does NOT get enough attention due to the fact it’s only about 2 seconds long. Thus, it needs some more love!
i call this one, “the adorable Wildehopps concert scene!” but officially it is known as “Gazelle’s Concert/Credits Scene.”
we open up with this beautiful shot of Nick and Judy at said concert. front row seats ofc. again, the lighting is impeccable.
i LOVE the contest in angles: we go from live footage of gazelle that is shown on the screens at a tall mammal height, straight down to the smaller fox and bunny height. it really shows just how MASSIVE this concert really is, as well as how intimate it is for them.
Judy is just ADORABLE here, she’s clearly having a good time. the camera actually focuses the slightest bit more on this interaction so we can see their expressions more clearly.
judging from her reaction, and Nick’s lack of reaction, she seems to be:
a. proving to Nick that she in fact is loving it and
b. waiting for a sign of his emotional state,
which makes me wonder if the tickets were a surprise from Nick or something, because she really seems to want to outwardly show her excitement.
her smile widens and she’s clearly waiting for Nick’s response.
her little bounces up and down are just so ADORABLE and ughh i love her sm.
Nick turns to look and her, slightly amused.
and HERE IT IS!
it’s so clear she’s waiting for Nick’s approval to confirm to her “yes Judy, it is really wonderful isn’t it? and i am having a good time, everything is okay.”
AHHH.
and then Nick’s little smile back to her is just EVERYTHING. he seems to be saying “you’re having a good time, aren’t you?”
i hope u liked my analysis! lmk by leaving a comment or shoot me a message id love mutuals.
unfortunately the scene is only so short and therefore, this post is only this short. :(
Aka a list of my most recommended WildeHopps fics. (pg13 ofc…)
and yes, i’ve deliberately kept the description quite vague so you go and read them!
Tactical Heartstrings - i’ve quite literally been OBSESSED with this fic, the amount of times i’ve screamed is unholy. most notably it addresses the fact that Judy is such a hottie, like ofc she’d have Agent Jack Savage pining over her. kinda. love triangle? basically a fic surrounding Nick being so jealous it’s insane and an exorbitant amount of gift giving. bonus points for teaching me flower love language.
A Conflict in Biology By @marvelouscoyote - how does one write so in character! how! this little fic gives a unique perspective into Dr Fuzzby’s take on Wildehopps. if you’re a banter enthusiast like me you’ll love it. it’s also so interesting to hear another characters perspective on their obvious flirtation.
Not Awkward at All - also by Marvelouscoyote! again so in character it’s insane. like wtf. please lend me some. Nick and Judy are awkward the night after some- awkward - events? trust me here. also kinda drunken confessions?
Paradise on a Budget - this is so canon it hurts. like this screams behind the scenes so badly. Nick gets to show off all the things he loves about the city , showing Judy a real night out in town! unfinished but do not let this deter you! it can read like a one-shot (but i beg the author to finish the fic please.)
Love Languages by @literaphobe - popular for a reason duh! Wildehopps take on love languages whilst being totally in denial. what’s not to love?
Heads or Tails - drinking, drunkenness and games. i just love drunken confessions ugh. bonus points bc YOU can pick who does the drunken confession.
It’s quite a cost, but nothing comes for free - a classic new case falling in love trope, with just the right amount of head canons and cute moments. this fic inspired my head canon of Nick liking AC/DC!
Note to Nick - a cute one shot by @lawbreaker13 focusing on Nick and his emotions including his gratitude towards Judy. a little angsty but with plenty of fluff to go around
Tell me Something i don’t know - just freaking beautifully written. in character, pacing is perfect, it’s literally like a cup of hot chocolate on a winters day. Revolves around Gideon’s bakery
Champagne Problems - taylor swift reference i love it.
Broken Record - the aftermath of “Love ya Partner” is just too FREAKING GOOD. Aka Nick uses the L word
The case of Judith Laverne Hopps - 20k words of bliss. read it.
hope this helps! and a reminder this is just my opinion. remember to leave a kudos or a comment in support! it really motivates us writers!
btw i’m giving myself bonus points for not doing self promo for my own fic, so you’re welcome btw.
Jealous Judy - i mean come on, they gave us jealous Nick WE HAVE TO SEE JEALOUS JUDY.
The falling asleep trope - yk where someone (most definitely Judy) falls asleep and the other mc has to take them to bed? yeah come on this is smt that Judy would 100% accidentally do.
a WildeHopps movie night - collectively as a fandom we all agree that these two do movie nights. so it would be so cute to see it irl.
a Nick pov scene from Judy - that short little snippet of Judy through Nick’s eyes was just AMAZING. PLEASE i beg 🙏. also the height difference was just so cute.
a tail wagging scene - this would be ADORABLE to just quickly include and would demonstrate Nick genuinely catching feelings. bonus points if we does the “🤔😳🫣🤭” (in that exact order) trope
Nick’s family - memories or flashbacks of his parents and to give some more info on his mother and father. personally, i feel like she’s alive however Nick’s father left very early on.
Nick and Judy high school flashback - i just really wanna see a teenage Nick and Judy.
following on from that, meeting a character from either of their pasts - an old friend or even an enemy. bonus points if they start bringing up embarrassing high school moments please.
“and i’m not the liar, he is!” scene - they scrapped this for z2 but it would fit so well for the action-climax part
A soft Judy reaction - where she observes Nick doing something quite impressive or when they’re playing dress up again, and she pulls the “wow he’s so stunning” face (echoing Nick during the gala)
a WILDEHOPPS DANCE SCENE - okay this is pushing it but some sort of dance (or even little snippet) of something similar the Tangled dance scene.
okay scrap that, i need the entire Tangled dance scene for Wildehopps bc it includes all THREE of my previous points: a soft judy, a tail wagging scene (YK WHEN EUGENE LOOKS AT RAPS LIKE 🤭 WITH HER HAIR BRAIDED) and the dance scene is just 🤌
when watching the second film i absolutely fell in LOVE with the “going home scene” which is what i call it. or maybe better and more officially known as, according to the zootopia wiki, “the dream team scene”.
i just love everything about it, the slice of life idea, the beauty, the characterisation but most notably the fact it underpins their differences so VISUALLY. it is a key example of “show don’t tell” in media.
firstly we open up with such a STUNNING atmosphere, the sun is setting, the lighting is soft, the sky is pink, we see Nick and Judy together ugh. hats off to whoever worked lights for this.
the whole vibe just gives off a hard days work.
Nick’s shirt just stands out so well here and compliments the lighting/atmosphere too. plus gawd damn does he look fine 😽
we see their differences in personality visually and outspokenly: Judy holds a bunch of case files and on top her partnerships for dummies book, showing the pressure she feels and is carrying. Yet on the top is her partnership book, demonstrating she finds that her relationship with Nick to be the most important.
contrastingly, Nick carries nothing and has his typical laissez faire attitude, paws in pockets.
they discuss proving themselves outwardly.
we get this ADORABLE shot of Nick’s pov and a little glimpse in how he sees her and omg she’s just adorable. the lighting really compliments her eyes.
plus, this scene highlights their height difference like geez Nick really has to look down.
Wildehopps banter ofc.
but just admire the golden sunlight, the acacia tree, the camera blurs and focuses on Nick.
this shot is so amazing.
the hustle and bustle of everyday life in Zootopia- contrasted with Judy studying her files already (characterisation yipee!)
as well as that, the glowing gold lighting framing her is so beautiful. i feel like it kinda highlights how she’s still a smalltown bunny in a busy city.
ofc contrasted by Nick and this shot. like look how cool he looks hitching a ride on this garbage truck. it’s so playful and cool i love it.
it shows he’s at home in the city. he knows it inside and out.
and hello we finally get to see Nick’s apartment?? i love how the lighting turns quite cool and dark, contrasting the previous scenes, maybe portraying how Nick feels “better” with Judy?
and ofc we finish the sequence with the SHRINE. the carrot pen. the newspaper.
Judy occupies his space and has her own dedicated place in his home, how cute 🤭
thank you for your question! i hope u enjoyed the answer! feel free to send any more!
If you’re currently stuck with writers block, or even debating whether to start writing, let this post be your sign!
the text you’re reading is something i sent to my friend in regards to the most important aspect of story writing. That is, staying in character. (aside from having a convincing plot!)
so this begs the question:
How do I write in character?
here are some small tips and tricks to get in character, and stay in character!
speech!
when creating dialogue, try and make the conversation sound as natural as possible to the character! re-read/re-watch scenes and study how they talk. for example, do they use a lot of rhetorical questions? do they use any catchphrases? do they use certain words? if so, put them in! capture the “mood” of their speech. study whether they swear or not, this reveals a lot about the character!
speak out loud! read the dialogue to yourself. this is superrr helpful for punctuation, as you naturally take pauses in sentences. additionally, you can see which words take stress in certain conversations.
when finished, read through each line of dialogue and really consider: would they say this? would they react this way? would they NOTICE this?
characterisation!
study body language, movements or gestures, link these to moods. find anything unique to the character, and use this to show, not tell! for example, Judy’s ears lower when she’s negatively surprised, sad, vulernable or emotional. this can also be applied to help break up dialogue heavy scenes. for example, break up sentences with movement that implies how they’re thinking. (“I don’t know…” her gaze lowered, “we’re stuck?”)
think of how they would describe things, how would they perceive things? are they a pessimist or an optimist? skeptical or open minded?
look at how they move. confident? shy? incorporate this into their gestures etc. (he flicked his hair, she tucked her hair behind her ear, he fidgeted with his hands)
roleplay!
try and get someone to act out the scene, or art out the scene yourself. take notes of your own facial expressions, movement, tone of voice etc.
music!
listen to music and find lyrics that resonate with the character. or find music that you think that character would listen to. are they a pop lover? or do they not listen to music much? why do they connect with this song?
mood boards!
create Pinterest boards of what the character would wear or do etc. what’s their style? what are their aspirations?
instagram!
additionally think of what they would post publicly on instagram, what would their social media look like? would it be empty? organised? or even public? this reveals so much about the character!
inspiration!
if you’re struggling to write emotional scenes, look into similar situations the character has canonically been in, and take inspiration. for example, you’re unsure how they’d face in a life threatening situation, look at scenes where they’ve had to do something urgently etc
outside sources!
find other characters who are similar and take inspiration!
lastly, research!
if you’re still struggling, i’d recommend looking up acting techniques of getting into character.
(so it’s true that once you come to the end of your longer fic, new ideas take over and you slowly dissolve into complete chaos…)
HELLOOO it’s been a long time since i’ve last written something and OMG THIS FELT LIKE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR i needed this badly. school can literally die its taking up 2 months straight of my calendar before i can get back into my rhythm. wtf.
unfortunately y’all with have to bear with me for a while for the last chapter of parenting :(
but anyways! i thought id share this little snippet of what i managed to write in my free hour. it’s for an upcoming (very long) one shot which i’m super excited about yayy!
i hope you’re having an awesome day, and happy late Chinese/Lunar New Year!
