Janis Joplin's Psychadelic Porsche

In 1968, Joplin purchased her iconic Porsche 356c and had it painted in an array of psychadelic imagery that made the car a signature piece. Fans knew the car so well that when it was spotted, they would sometimes leave notes tucked into its windshield wipers. On the tragic day she passed in October 1970, fans knew she was at the hotel when they identified her car.

The car was inherited by her siblings Michael and Laura Joplin, who held onto it for around 30 years. Eventually, its paint began to flake and they decided to paint it a light grey before restoring all of the original artwork with a more-durable paint. The fuel filler door, pictured, is one of the only remaining original pieces of the car's art.

In 1995, the car was loaned to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame where it remained for 20 years, then it was auctioned in 2015 for $1.76 million dollars to a collector who (allegedly) bought as a gift to herself for her 60th birthday.

The porsche now resides with its new owner in Gull Lake, Michigan.
