Prelude

I started writing an Underworld fanfiction about fifteen eighteen years ago (as of 2026). It is a slowburn love story between Lucian, leader of the lycan Horde, and an unknown vampire with the gift of bloodsight. Each chapter has visuals or points of reference that inspire me. I'm going to try and make a post for each chapter. Possibly for each character. It could be songs or imagery. And it will be slow because I'm doing this on the side as I write...

...and they don't call me Rushwriter for nothing. (Whisper: It's because I'm slooooow.)

Why do you think many readers hate Freyja?

I think Freyja has been placed into multiple roles by her society. She is the intended wife of an emperor. Therefore, she must be "perfect" in that role, ensuring that her interests align with Lucian, as well as both Southern and Northern lycan politics. Effectively, she is meant to be a shining role model for other lycan women.

She is also the "other woman," the counterbalance to Reinette. There is friction between them, but over time, you also have moments where one can show understanding for the other's circumstances (even though they do not trust one another). It's difficult to know what Freyja wants though because (even for me) she holds her cards close.

For readers, they may hate her, but I hope it's a love to hate moment (I love writing her 😆).

I'm very interested in the true relationship between Freyja and Erling. Could you tell me a little about it?

Another great question! I still have more Freyja to write, so I do not want to say too much. I can confirm that, regardless of marriage treaties, she continues to live in a world where "Erling the Heir" remains the prized child of her father. He may be angry and spoiled, but he is still her half-brother. I expect in time, we will find out if that makes him family regardless of all or someone to be removed from her path forward (I don't always know with Freyja. She keeps her cards close).

Where did the idea of ​​Sabas being a queer man come from? And how does Lycan society deal with queer people? (Actually, my theory is that Freyja is also queer.)

Excellent question! The short answer would be, "I need this to bring me joy," but I am going to try and unpack that.

I knew a few years back already that when we meet him again, Sabas would be a shepherd, and he would have found joy. From there I was thinking about why he would leave everything behind, and it became this warm lovely story in my head that Sabas left because he fell in love with a quiet, calm shepherd named Thomas who taught him everything there was to know about sheep.

As to lycan society, I think particularly after Sonja's death, Lucian would have wanted to build a society where all people could love each other. Vampire culture has rules about whom one could love, so I think for lycan culture, Lucian would have smashed those up as early as possible (Welcome, here is your sword. If you are bigot, here is the door)

I also know that lycans have to hide in mortal culture (full of barriers) without drawing attention to themselves, so I expect anyone who is a visibility minority (e.g., Raze) or queer (e.g., Sabas) would have a different experience than Lucian while hiding in Europe throughout the ages.

In my head, this leaves room for people who face barriers in the mortal world (e.g., queer people, Black people) to become incredibly powerful in lycan society.

This does not mean things are perfect in lycan society because every time you Change someone, they bring their beliefs with them, regardless of how many speeches Lucian can give about hating bigotry.

All this to say, I think lycan society is better than mortal society for being accepting of queer people, but it is not perfect.

(Right at this spot, I had written a whole loooong bit here with another example of how things are not perfect. How women eventually do rise up as lycans, but how they still do not have equal rights in society, whether because they are Northerners or under 60...and with Freyja, I think she is constantly having to work around these barriers to achieve her goals...and then I pressed Save Draft and it did not save the draft. 🫠 Alas!)

While reviewing Underworld canon, I just noticed that the name Thomas is used prominently in Underworld: Awakening for a vampire coven leader.

Unfortunately, I may have to rename Thomas from Chapter 99, even though he's already had his name imprinted on my brain as Thomas.

Woe.

Update #1: I cannot do it. Not after Sabas' affirmation. There will just have to be two people named Thomas.

Update #2: Unless I do "Tomas"...

Update #3: No. The character is definitely a Thomas.

Eighteen years ago, I apparently misspelled Tannis as Tanis in my fanfic. It may be time to finally go back and correct it.

Update: After searching a bit, I am seeing Tanis written online, but Tannis in the Underworld: Rise of the Lycans credits.

Update #2: OMG it's spelled Tanis in the Underworld Evolution credits. Apparently ROTL had it wrong. Leaving it as Tanis.

For a time, he held the stone in his hand. Gently taking her hand up and watching the fingers as she slept. Knowing…and yet no longer knowing…the scent of her skin, that scent which had once called him like a kiss on the back of a neck. Letting him believe for a moment that age had not caught up with them. That she would not die in the next ten or twenty years.

His thoughts causing him to brood over the hand. Brood that he had not been stronger, that he could not have offered her more than the death she'd receive for being mortal.
