World Sindhi Congress (WSC) mourns the untimely death of Adi Afsana Bhurghuri. Sindh and Sindhi people have lost one of their finest daughters. Adi was a passionate believer in the rights of Sindhi people, but more importantly in rights of Sindhi women, who remain grossly ignored, discriminated and marginalised in Sindhi society. She rightly believed that without the uplift of women, Sindhi society cannot progress. She tirelessly worked, and established organisation ‘Sartyoon’, for this cause by mobilising women in Sindh and overseas. Her efforts were bringing fruit and created a momentum, but unfortunately her sudden demise will be a great setback to the cause. Her death is even more momentous in time when Sindh and Sindhi people are facing multiple and critical challenges. In the circumstances, when there is a severe dearth of people who work with commitment and consistency on matters that are fundamental to societal progress, her loss will be irreparable for Sindh. She was a valued friend of WSC and helped and participated in its activities. The unavailability of water in many districts of the province to cultivate land is also a factor that affects this sector. In the coastal belt of the province, sea intrusion has been playing a lethal role in destroying the agricultural prospect of the region. Thatta, Sujawal and Badin has been prone to such sea intrusions for years. World Sindhi Congress delegates attending the 2019 UN Permanent Forum of Indigenous Peoples in New York.
