I’m curious as to why trans* has an asterisk next to it. Or maybe I’m just reading too far into it.

That’s just the way it is, I’ve never understood why and no one’s ever explained it.

Because Trans* is short for many things, not just transgender or transexual, but also something else I don’t know about. So it’s one shorting for many things, hence the asterisk. Plus, trans* is considered politically correct, whereas “Trans” and “Tranny” are considered offensive by the trans* community.
