Back in 2017, @leotide posted this incredible piece, which is easily one of my favourite scientific illustrations of all time.

An actual photo of a skinless Geckolepis (here a never-before-posted photo of a G. cf. maculata, not G. megalepis) is below the cut. There is no blood or gore, but I could see how this would make some uncomfortable, so I have hidden it.

I have examined dozens of museum specimens of these geckos, and I haven't found a single one that appeared never to have lost at least some part of its skin or tail and regrown them. So, although it seems extreme, this is something these geckos do readily, and are specially adapted to do. Remarkably, they seem to be able to make a full recovery, even when a huge portion of the skin is lost in this way. They seek shelter in a humid spot, and let the skin regrow—a process that apparently only takes a matter of weeks. And yes, it's the whole dermis, not just the scales. This makes my work as a taxonomist very hard, because counting scales is one of the most reliable ways to tell lizard species apart.

The readiness with which these geckos lose their scales means that a careless capture can quickly result in an animal that looks like the one pictured above. Many museum specimens look like this one—impossible to count scales on. It is for this reason that I have developed special techniques to work with these geckos. It honestly shocks me that they are in the pet trade; you could not ask for a more fragile reptile pet!

I think we need to explore the body horror possibilities of hyperspace. Like, you know how it's bad for astronauts to be up in space for too long because of radiation and the effects of weightlessness on human physiology? What of hyperspace was like that, but *worse*. What if it had effects on your body, or even your mind, that are difficult even to imagine? What if if you spend too long out there, your body starts spreading out along the fourth dimension because there's nothing to hold it in place; and then when go back into normal space, you get 'flattened' back down into three dimensions but everything isn't quite where it's supposed to be? Or the matter displaced along the fourth dimension just clips out and whole chunks of your body just disappear? Or there's some exotic form of matter in hyperspace that, over time, replaces the normal matter in your body until you can't return at all because it can't exist in our spacetime? Open to other ideas.

Night Watch is a masterpiece and Hogfather will always be a personal favourite, but to me, to me, Going Postal will always be as close to perfect as a Discworld book can be. It introduces a new protagonist who immediately knocks it out of the park and establishes himself as one of the most iconic and fantastic Discworld protagonists in a pantheon of heavy hitters. He's a weasel. He's touched by divinity. He keeps getting himself into trouble because he has an unshakeable need to escalate. He's killed 2.338 people. He's apparently very attracted to women who smoke.

He's paired off against the perfect villain, his equal and opposite who has learned to cheat and swindle and con behind the language of corporate speak, "we hope and trust that our valued and loyal customers will bear with us over the coming months as we interact synergistically with changed management and our striving for excellence." It's a story about the capital-fuelled enshittification of a technology that can be good and improve the lives of thousands and how monopolies will literally strangle innovation.

It's a story about delivering a message from the dead.
