I want a sci fi featuring mermaids and whales and undersea stuff. What kind of technology would they develop in the water.
How would they keep records? Sea water is corrosive and coral, barnacles, seaweed etc…. Grows on everything.
How is fashion influenced. Like us flowly stuff dangerous, you could get trapped? Most parts of the sea aren’t influenced by seasons, so are there other reasons for looks to change over time - like holidays, or coming of age - or is everything stable until styles change?
What would public transit be? Are there vehicles of any kind, or is everyone happy to swim themselves whenever they need to go?
Fire and electricity. Like yes there are undersea heating vents but that doesn’t exactly give the same options as fire. And no electricity. Seems like technology may be more dependent on mechanics, which brings us back to sea water is corrosive and stuff like mussels and coral and seaweed grows on everything.
I suppose I’m focusing on the limitations under the sea. I can’t help it. I have land bias. Learning and listening.
Are there social hierarchies or different groups from different depths and haloclines? I mean it would make sense for there to be different resources, practices, and therefore cultures? And maybe conflict? Or at least trade?
