I would say your best bet is probably a 2g or 0g and the point of no return varies person to person and depends on many factors. If you take your time and keep your ears very healthy and lubed up and happy then you should easily be able to down size back to an 18g from a 0g :)

I'm tapering to 10g right now and one is further along than the other. When I went and bought my jewelry, the dude first sold me a claw that went straight through, he measured the jewelry wrong and I went back and he sold me a damn 4g and 6g and I didn't realize cause I'm so new at this, so we tried putting the 6g (cause it was smaller) through my frozen ear and I couldn't tell we were over stretching. We realized it was too big pretty quick cause barely went 1/4 of the way through -.-

I went up to Hot Topic and finally got actual tapers (of the right size) since they knew what they were talking about and I'm so excited. I'm actually now set from 10g-4g since the idiot fucked up at the other store and I've gotten some cute Finn plugs from Adventure Time until I get more money so I can get the 2g tapers and a final set of plugs. (which will be difficult because my mother is furious and even though I'll be 25 on the 10th of December, she is well, a mother and a bigot. She told me to move to a tribe in Africa and I made things worse by telling her I was getting my septum pierced, with words she could understand, having a bone through my nose. I just like to fuck with her because she is so thick.) 

Anyway, thank you so much for the advice and I have one more question for you. I've read that porous type (I'm assuming wood is the only type) plugs are best because they don't "stink up" as badly. Have you used them? Do you know anyone who has and what type do you recommend? There are so many different varieties. >.<

I'm sorry for such a long reply and shit. None of my friends have their ears gauged and no one else offered any responses, so I have no one else to ask.
