the "my sister lover&co." saga
1991: noel starts writing what would become a series of songs: "my sister lover", "lock all the doors", "setting sun", and "comin' on strong".
1992/1993: oasis records the demo "comin' on strong", later they re-use its riff for another demo, "lock all the doors". 1992 is also the year noel gifted liam a star-shaped tambourine for his 20th birthday, an object mentioned in noel's solo version of "lock all the doors" (go to 18:40).
notably, "comin' on strong" also seems to reference demo 1 of liam's song "take me", which in turn seems to reference one of noel's earliest song, "hey you", which in turn blatantly references pink floyd's "hey you" lol. the sequence: "hey you / out there in the cold / getting lonely, getting old / can you feel me?" (pink floyd) -> "hey you / if you're out there in the cold / or maybe if you're feeling old / don't look ashamed" (noel's demo) -> "take me when i'm young and true" [...] "take me 'cause i'm feeling old / all my life i've been so cold" (take me demo 1) -> "you're the devil in me that i brought in from the cold / your body's still young and your mind is very old" (comin' on strong).
1996: noel co-writes a song for the chemical brothers, "setting sun", and re-uses the melody of "lock all the doors" (but not the chorus) and of "comin' on strong". the lyrics are just an alternate take of verse one from "comin' on strong", the verse with the possible reference to "take me" demo 1: "you're the devil in me / i brought in from the cold / you said your body was young but your mind was very old / you're comin' on strong and i like the way / the visions we had are fading away / you're part of the life i never had / i'll tell you now it's just too bad" etc. etc. (setting sun).
released one week after noel kidnapped liam so they could spend some time together alone in a country house. including, maybe, liam's birthday.
1996: noel records the mustique demo of "my sister lover", which contains the verses "you're my lover / i'm your brother".
1997: oasis records the final version of "my sister lover". in noel's version we have the verse "today i think i'll waste your time", in liam's it becomes "today i think i'll waist my time". it's the b-side to "stand by me", another song that seems to be about liam and noel, down to the video featuring two sisters with a complicated relationship. and both are released the day after liam's birthday (the sleeve for "stand by me" also features a photo of a couple).
1998: noel calls my sister lover "a, er, thingy' and claims it's one of his least favorite songs.
2013: beady eye gives an interview where liam is asked why he would name a song "donβt brother me", and he replies: 'well, it just sounds shi*t, "donβt sister me", doesnβt it? especially when i havenβt got a sister'. a possible dig at "my sister lover"?
2014: after 23 years (!) noel finally completes "lock all the doors" with new lyrics, claiming the inspiration suddenly found him in a tesco metro. also, he admits that for the song he nicked a bit from "ever fallen in love (with someone you shouldn't have)" by the buzzcocks. yeah.
2015: noel releases "lock all the doors" on the anniversary of oasis' split. its b-side is "(here's a candle) for your birthday cake", a song that seems aimed at liam too (possible reference to spending liam's birthday together alone in 1996/the release date of "my sister lover"?).
2016: the re-issue of the "be here now" lyrics booklet comes out and "my sister lover" is the only song without commentary.
2024: liam performs the "lock all the doors" demo.
2025: when matt morgan asks noel about "my sister lover", noel pretends he doesn't know it lol. also, on reddit he claims he doesn't remember the specifics of this whole saga. at the same time, the oasis twitter account makes a poll and one of the options is "my sister lover"; it's the first time in a long time that the song gets a proper official acknowledgement.
2026~: we finally hear "my sister lover" performed live...? who knows.
