Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.
the man with many faces has a lot of eyes to see
but the man with many faces cant decide just who to be
reminder that if you’re questioning your gender, “what do I want?” and “what will make me happy?” tend to be much more useful questions than “what am I, really?”

Hey, new KS reader here 👋🏽 do you have any thoughts on this scene from chapter 34: it was during Sangwoo’s arrest. He was in the car lying down in the backseat, when he saw a yellow butterfly through the window. He tried to reach for it but the window blocked him from doing so. What do you think Koogi was trying to communicate here? (I hope I explained that well) thank u 💛
Hello and welcome!! :D Sorry for the wait :3
The butterfly is a symbol often associated with change and rebirth. In Chinese culture, it also represents the ‘young love of a young heart’ and an ‘undying bond between lovers’. In Korean culture, it apparently also symbolizes ‘free love and happiness’.
According to a Reddit thread, Koreans also see butterflies as a symbol of ‘good luck in marriage’, yet they may also be associated with ‘death of the body and/or soul’ in Eastern Asian cultures.
Now, I think all of these meanings can work as an interpretation of this scene
First of all, the butterfly panel appears alongside the “he killed his family” text. We know Seungbae’s statement isn’t true because Sangwoo didn’t actually kill his parents, yet Sangwoo himself thinks he did. As the butterfly is also symbol of strong and happy marriage, I think one of the meanings this scene has is this …
Sangwoo has clearly suffered a lot through his life due to his abusive family. He was a pretty affectionate kid and even as an adult he longs for affection and is absolutely scared of losing it (hence why he turns so crazy at the idea of Bum leaving him). In a sense, all Sangwoo ever wanted is a happy family who could love him, which is what you would expect as the result of a happy and strong marriage (something that Eunseo and Mr. Oh’s union has never been). Sangwoo even tries to reenact the idea he has of the ‘happy family he never had’ in chapter 56,
[Spoiler in case you sent this ask while still reading the comic]
when he makes Bum wear Eunseo’s red apron and cook a big, fancy dinner while Sangwoo comes back home in his father’s clothes … But we know that this experiment has the worst outcome it could have, as Sangwoo hallucinates Eunseo in the room and Bum accidentally pulls a few of his triggers and falls asleep during the only time where Sangwoo actually tries to open his heart to him.
[end of the spoiler]
In this sense, I think Sangwoo trying to reach out for the butterfly but being ultimately unable to reach it, and actually scaring it away instead, symbolizes his wish for familial affection and his impossibility to reach it, because everytime he tries to get closer to it he actually takes one step closer to his own defeat.
The butterfly being a symbol of ‘free love and happiness’ can also play a role. First of all, I think what Sangwoo wishes for his relationship with Bum to be like is not exactly like the one between two lovers, but more like the unconditional love between a parent and a son, or between two siblings (as early as chapter5, Sangwoo recognizes himself and Bum as similar, tied by a similar past due to both having had to deal with abuse in their childhood). Sangwoo wishes he could be free to love and to be happy, but this is not possible due to Eunseo’s ghost still haunting him. So, even if he tries to grab his freedom and right to be happy (the butterfly), he never accomplishes it because his actions push him further and further away.
Bum may be the butterfly, his chance to be happy, but he’s forced by his past trauma to see him through his resemblance with Eunseo, which is the glass of the window making them apart and causing Sangwoo’s hand to hit the surface and scare the butterfly away. Sangwoo has an undying bond with someone, but that someone is not Bum, it’s Eunseo. All of his issues, after all, are rooted in the fact that he was never able to get over his mother’s death and he still feels haunted by her presence.
Last, the butterfly may be also seen as the symbol of change and rebirth in a similar fashion: no matter if Sangwoo tries to change, he’s into this too deep to avoid his fate and not even Bum’s love can help him. He’s going to hurt and scare Bum away over and over again just as he did with the butterfly, whether he does it intentionally or not. This kind of gets confirmed in the season2 finale, since Bum helps him out of it but all he gets in exchange is Sangwoo punching and raping him. Later, Sangwoo apologizes for it and he tries to change again, but we all know this isn’t going to last long either.

Love hurts, they say.

Reverse
Have you ever heard of the Reverse AU? Well this is my version of it~
It’s more like personality swap but yeap “Reverse AU” Basically… The dynamics are the same, same story and everything, Sangwoo is still a killer but with Bummie’s personality, and viceversa, Bum still a creep stalker but with Sangwoo’s personality…
actor au headcannons
ok an anon asked me to scream about the actor au and I’m MORE THAN HAPPY to oblige as i c a n n o t put into words how strongly i feel about it soo heres my contribution to the fandom:
sangwoo and bum are the POLAR OPPOSITE of their on screen parts like bum is super confident, never embarrassed, laughs at everything, very sociable, funny and approachable and sangwoo is really selfless, kind, really very sweet and just an all round ray of sunshine
however, seungbae and sangwoo are really competitive in real life but in much more of a jokey way like how close friends or siblings are and will make a competition out of everything
sangwoo has a younger sister who is 6 and bum has a younger sister who is 15
bums uncle was in a lot of shows and movies and stuff years ago but hasn’t acted in a lot of recent stuff but bum and sangwoo were high-key nerds about his films and were both really nervous and fan-boyish when they met him
bum is really active on social media and the producers have to tell him to stop vlogging for his insta stories on set cos he keeps accidentally tom holland-style leaking spoilers
he also is super reliant on coffee like if this boy don’t get his caffeine in daily he will not be a happy boy
sangwoo had never done any kind of acting before, bum had gone to an acting school and been in a couple of commercials and jieun had been in a small girl group that sung before the show but this was all of their first big break
sangwoo and seungbae are constantly hungry. like they could have EACH finished a whole ass large pizza and 0.2 seconds later they’ll be like ‘anyone got anything to eat?’
on the other hand, bum is constantly napping on set. like he could get a full 14 hours of sleep and still manage to fall asleep in some obscure piece of set or on a prop
bum messes up the most takes by forgetting lines and sangwoo messes up the most takes by cracking up laughing
sangwoo checks that bum is ok after every single crying scene. every single one
sangwoo cannot ski for SHIT and so a lot of season 3 was a Challenge for him to say the least
i just love the idea of jieun being a terrible cook like if this girl manages to make a sandwich without it going wrong thats honestly an achievement
bum on the other hand cannot drive. for SHIT. he’s a nightmare to be in the car with bc he will speed everywhere, almost hit anything that moves, constantly swerving and then follow the near death experience with the most deadpan ‘whoops.’
sangwoo improvises a lot of his lines like some CLASSICS were improvised like ‘i am inside’ ‘nah, you’re scary’ ‘of course it’s dark… it’s the basement’ and ‘we’re about to become one so it won’t be a problem’ were all improv. the producers were fine because it added to his character
sangwoo originally had longer, darker hair and planned only to cut it for the show but liked it so much he kept it dyed and shorter even when not filming
the whole cast calls each other by their character names very frequently as a joke
bum made sangwoo carry the crutches around for most of season 1 because they were a pain to carry. his excuse for making him do this was ‘maybe you should have thought about this before you broke my legs,’
also he is able to cry on demand in like 0.01 seconds which obviously would be helpful
if seungbae encounters any minor inconvenience, he will, even if sangwoo isn’t there, blame it somehow on sangwoo (again as a joke). once he called him after spilling his drink on his laptop to explain that this was somehow sangwoo’s fault.
BOY do i have more but this post is long af already. maybe i will do a part 2 lol anyways hope u enjoyed
pls feel free to add ur own actor au headcannons onto this!!

- After the car accident, Bum is in critical condition, but survives. Seungbae, of course, is 😱😱😱 the whole time and probably cries at his bed many times. (Bum's high school friend ends up comforting him. She is also shaken.) He's grown attached to Bum after sacrificing so much to save him and watching him "recover", only to deliver the final blow (literally) to undo it all. He really thought Bum was gone.
- One day, Bum finally wakes up. Seungbae perks up, having to stop himself from overwhelming Bum with words and questions.
- His first words are: "Who... are you? Who... am I?"
- Bum feels as if he had died. He was killed without being killed: his memory is largely wiped clean. He doesn't know who he is. It's all blank white... which fills him with both panic and relief. Seungbae explains the basic stuff, childhood friend contributes. Bum weakly smiles and passes out again.
- Bum's injuries mean he has to use a wheelchair from now on, and really needs a carer to look after him. Of course, he has no family who could take care of him at this point. The high school friend offers to help out, but she clearly can't commit enough. Seungbae doesn't hesitate to take on the responsibility. He blames himself for the accident, after all.
- As a result, Seungbae and Bum move in together. High school friend and Seungbae's friends help out when they can, too. Bum goes to physiotherapy and sees a psychiatrist regularly. Seungbae pays for any treatment that isn't free.
- Even without memories, Bum's personality is much the same - easily attached and eager to please. And who can blame him in this situation? As he recovers, he insists on helping out more around the house. When Seungbae goes back to work (this time in a less dangerous capacity, to make sure he can be there for Bum), Bum makes the house look nice and cooks him dinner for when he comes back. They eat together, laugh and chat about Seungbae's work. For Seungbae, even boring work isn't a burden anymore. He finds himself being excited to go home and spend time with Bum. His work now has a purpose.
- While they eat, occasionally Seungbae will touch Bum's hand, remarking how cold his fingers are. Every now and then he will surprise Bum with flowers - his favourite, rare lavender roses. On weekends they go on walks to pretty parks, visit a temple or explore museums and galleries. Seungbae doesn't think much of it, but Bum... well, it's still Bum. And Bums develop feelings fast.
- After dinner they watch TV together. Under the excuse of practicing physio exercises, Bum scoots over to snuggle up against Seungbae. Seungbae is surprised and flustered, but doesn't push him away. Human contact feels nice. Being close to someone feels nice. Being trusted and forgiven by Bum feels like all he would ever want.
- Over time, this becomes routine. They watch TV, read books out loud or just talk while cuddled up on the sofa, unbothered by the physical contact at this point. One night Seungbae hears Bum sobbing his eyes out in his room. Thankfully, it's just one of his nightmares. Seungbae lets Bum sleep in his bed that night, hugging him close, reassuring him that he's safe. Bum cries a little bit again into his chest, this time out of happiness.
- Bum's memories don't come back until much later - in distressing, disjointed chunks. There is a strange man with no face who fills Bum with panic and fear, but also a strong sense of longing. Seungbae explains the story as much as he can and holds him close, letting Bum cry it out in a safe embrace.
- Thankfully, this time Bum doesn't have to run after a faceless man who smells of death and abuse. Previously, it was the only kind of love he'd ever known. But it's not like that anymore. He is being genuinely cared for by someone who'd rather die than cause him (any more) harm. Someone who won't go away, so there is no need to run after them or stalk them. Bum longs for more, but this is still wonderful. Even with his mostly blank memory accounted for, such security feels... new.
- After what seems like an eternity of this odd domestic bliss, Seungbae comes home to an oddly determined Bum. Dinner is especially nice tonight, and Bum even lit some aromatic candles that made the flat smell like flowers and honey. Seungbae is puzzled, and for some reason his heart beats faster. Afterwards, Bum rolls over in his wheelchair to an empty floor space, gesturing Seungbae to come closer. Seungbae stands in front of him. Bum opens his cupped palms to reveal a ring - the same one he had with him during his accident.
"I can't stand up on one knee, but... Seungbae-ssi, will you be my husband?"
Without a warning, Seungbae breaks into tears.
It's a yes.
