Even Cynthia could no longer deny the impressively sub-zero temperatures, and she was usually the first to boast about her thick skin.
What? She was forced to listen to so many non-Sinnohans complain.Â
All tournaments and challenges had been called off that morning, thanks to an icy from swept in from the north, and now she was waiting for the shuttle back to Sunnyshore city. It was too risky to fly back on Garchomp, the dragon hated the snow, but the windows were beginning to frost up and the snowbank along the route to victory road had begun to pile up. The island usually didnât have to deal with much snow thanks to all the salt from the surrounding ocean. Unfortunately that also meant that they were embarrassingly under-prepared.
The Champion hoped sheâd be able to make it home.
âYouâre here too, Joy?â she asked the nurse who looked more than a little anxious about the weather herself. She was the on-site medic, a very skilled pokemon healer. But when the league was quiet so too was her job, usually she spent her days with her chin rested in her palm looking bored.Â
âI should have left on the last ferry when I had the chance,â Joy shook her head in frustration. âThis sort of thing always happens to meâŠâ
âWeâd be lost without you to worry about us,â Cynthia comforted and she was rewarded with a smile.
Joy nodded before offering of fetch everyone a coffee, a gesture Cynthia accepted gladly.
Oh yes, there were others trapped here with her. She was so comfortable in the league she sometimes forgot to greet the trainers that came and went, instead opting to hide-away in her office.
âI hope you werenât intending to challenge me today?â she asked the trainer seated next to her. Trying to keep the tone casual.
Outside a gust of wind swept past, shaking the panels in the large glass windows.
[ You can be a bit of a pain at times but I do and will always care for you, Cynthia. Thank you for being my best friend throughout all of these years. I know you say that these are cheesy and nerdy but it is how I express my feelings. I love you very much. You're like a sister to me, who never fails to cheer me up or look out for me if I do anything reckless. Happy Valentine's Day. I do hope these won't get mixed up with your admirers ] - attached is a palm sized box filled with chocolates
âWhat a big softie you are! Donât worry, chocolates from admirers may come and go but best friends are eternal! Happy valentines, lovely Riley! I hope you got some chocolates from someone other than me and your mother this year - One day youâll gossip with me about your love life!â
âMy friends call me Cyn so feel free to use it if youâd like. I can call you Liah, yes?âÂ
Liah nodded quickly, red-faced from both the wine and the Championâs teasing jab from earlier, the expensive alcohol swishing harmlessly in her cup. âOf course,â the Lady replied with a smile as she leaned back comfortably on the bed, feeling the tension seep out of her muscles. âCyn, then.â
There was a comfortable pause as neither of them spoke, both women taking sips from their glasses. The silence itself was warm, invitingâand if it wasnât for Cynthia breaking the quiet with a compliment on Liahâs tastes, the Lady might have drifted off then and there.

"Most of itâs just natural..." Cynthia echoed as she watched her companion press her finger to her lips. A far more rationale voice in the back of Cynthia's mind told her that she was very obviously staring, but then again, did she care? Not really, but she concluded that "Aliah" and "Natural" sounded just right together.
She hadn't realised how much time had passed and how late it had become until it was brought up. Without her noticing, their dramatic afternoon had become a still and peaceful night but for the faint rush of the sea.
"Fascinating? You flatter me" she teased, trying very hard to squash down the sense of pride. "I'm hardly all that interesting these days and as for my secrets? Well, after everything that happened here in Alola recently... I'm afraid I might be a little 'old hat'."
No longer content to sit, the blonde set aside her empty glass and took to the end of Liah's bed instead, her own seemed a little cold and too far away for gossiping. She laced her fingers together and rested them on her lap.Â
"I suppose I did always want to be Champion," she answered after a pause, flashing a glance at Aliah who still had her chin resting on her elbows, cheeks a little pink and eyes bright. Suddenly she felt very much like a young trainer again, whispering in the dead of night at a pokemon centre with a new rival she'd made that day. It all felt very girlish and free.Â
"Well, actually I wanted to be a legendary pokemon at first but my Grandmother wouldn't have any of it. My younger sister Celeste never wanted to leave our hometown, but I got bored of rocks and old legends rather quickly. I wanted to see and discover and fight the whole world and as soon as I met Gible that's what I did."
The blonde sighed, nostalgia turning up the corners of her mouth.
"I was quite the troublemaker," she admitted. "Not the sort of person who should be an acting Champion. I wouldn't like to say how many times I almost got my friend and I killed - he thought I was some kind of deviant animal, Iâm sure. But I took on the elite four anyway, just to show them all how powerful I was, and you know, it was rather fun being the first female Champion for a while. I definitely made the most of it."
It was probably the wine, or the compliments or the fact that Liah had been so open with her. Yes, that was probably what it was.
"But then I met these young trainers, and we had to face something much more powerful than anything I had faced alone."
She should stop talking.Â
Cynthia made a conscious effort to focus on the shadows the curtains left on the ceiling instead of losing herself in past memories.
Arceus help her, she was alone with a cute girl abroad on holiday in a completely different region. Sunny Alolah, no less! What was she doing bringing up that? The Cynthia of her youth wouldnât be wasting the midnight hours away reminiscing about past challengers or those kids or holes in the universe. Hadnât she come to Alola to get away from that?Â
Maybe she should message Dawn in the morning, or finally sent Lucas that post card, or ask Palmer if Barry liked the Birthday present sheâd sent.Â
More importantly; would nurse joy allow her another bottle of wine at this hour?
"Look at me, now I'm the one talking us into the night," she scoffed at herself, checking her poketch for the time. Not all that late for her usual habits, but an unsociable hour for most. "I'd imagine you don't need to hear about the woeful time the Sinnoh region almost caused the destruction of time and space? All that stuff happened, what? Ten years ago now?"
Cynthia, in a futile effort, attempted to brush her hair out of her eyes. The air was thick and freezing cold, but that didnât quell the warmth rising in her face as the snow piled up about her, or the sweat on her brow. Snorunt surveys were a harmless way to pass the time, but the real draw for Cynthia was all the physical activity.
What? The holiday season was never kind to her waistline (too many sweets) and what better than a good old-fashioned Sinnohan-style snow-shovelling to get her slim, trim and ready for swimsuit season?
Today was no exception and the champion already felt exhausted from bagging up half a dozen samples and clearing a path to the site. The survey wasnât the largest sheâd ever taken part in, about 20 square meters all neatly cordoned off with tape looped between trees. (It had only taken one night for a group of pesky sneasel to start tearing it down.) But to add an edge of frustration to her hard work - There wasnât a snorunt to be seen, but then again, they did have a tendency to be shy. Besides, this year Cynthia had her eye on a bigger prize.
Thrusting her shovel into the snow to make a momentary arm-rest - she checked her watch, no mean feat thanks to her large snow coat and mittens, and liked what she saw.
âTwelve thirty on the dot!â she announced with a mitten-muted clap of her hands. Turning to her companion, and flashing them a wink. âYou tired yet? How about we break for lunch?â
At the magic âLâ-word her Glaceon immediately popped her head out from the snowdrift she had been burrowing through, chirping with interest. Cynthia couldnât help but laugh.
Observant as always, Liah frowned slightly as she mulled over Cynthiaâs surprisingly deep response. The Championâs advice struck a chord with the Lady and lessened the sting of her earlier trauma, but she couldnât help but notice the faraway look in the blondeâs eyes upon dispensing that same wisdom. Liah noticed other little thingsâthe speed at which Cynthia drained her drink, the pensive frown on her lips.
I know that you hurt too, even just a little, the Johto native thought sympathetically, undoing her hair tie and sipping her drink a bit quicker, if only to keep pace. If youâre the strongest, then who do you have to fall back on when times get tough?
You were brave and acted quickly, if youâre unlucky and thereâs a next time, youâll be that much stronger.

Cynthia opened her mouth to protest - âIâm not a leader, that would make the Champion position wholly undemocratic, a caretaker perhaps?" but she promptly forgot to follow through with her words.
What was it she had just said? âIâm going to take care of youâ?
This woman⊠She was either incredibly brave or incredibly foolish. Perhaps too inexperienced to know the difference?
Cynthia was content to watch, cheek rested idly on her hand, as Liah made quite the show of ordering Cynthia to sit, retrieving the drinks from the rather put-out Nurse Joy, checking on her arm, pouring the glasses, making the toast - declaring it in Cynthiaâs honour. Not that the blonde minded the fuss, she enjoyed the attention, even if she was beginning to feel a little spoilt. If it had been anyone else it might have been excessive, but Liah somehow managed to always seem genuine.
There was a warmth about Liah that Cynthia found intriguing, a playful spark in her instructions even as her cheeks began to flush pink from the wine. Besides, it wasnât every day she was ordered about. Cynthia rather liked enjoyed the challenge.Â
âYou deserve a break like this⊠Cyn? May I call you that? It still doesnât sound quite right, Miss Champion.â
Cynthia blinked. Ah yes, a question. Better answer.
ââMiss Championâ is awfully formal donât you think, Miss Aliah? Especially since you were so kind and provided all of the drinks this evening. Are you trying to get me drunk to spill my secrets?â Cynthia teased, raising a brow. âMy friends call me Cyn so feel free to use it if youâd like. I can call you Liah, yes?â
She took another sip, savouring the taste. It was local Alolan wine, with an unmistakable aroma. Strong, but nothing she couldnât handle. Warm and pleasant like their room. An evening definitely worth the cost of a few stitches.
âYou have good taste.â she concluded, turning her attention back to her companion, suddenly curious. There was more to this story. She had underestimated Liahâs bravery earlier that day and had underestimated her of acting so brazen now. âI didnât have you pegged as the sort. A skill you picked up on your travels, or did your tower teach you?â
