Can we really trust speed cameras?
Speed cameras are a drivers worst nightmare, yet they continue to be installed along roads with the hopes to forcing drivers to slow down and to calm traffic, but ca we really trust speed cameras?
The original idea behind speed cameras was that they could be put up in areas where speeding or traffic accidents where common to promote safer driving by punishing those who broke the speed limit.
The idea worked for a time, and people began to slow down if they saw a speed camera so they would be caught on film speeding and receive a hefty fine, that said not everyone slowed down at the sight of a speed camera though. Criminals in stolen cars still sped through, and some younger drivers even began having competitions to see who could go fastest past the cameras!
Sino Concept rubber speed cushions would have slown them down!

Overall though speed cameras did a good job slowing honest drivers down, who did actually care about keeping their driving license, but then speed camera began to change!
So if the original idea behind speed cameras was to be a visual deterrent to speeding drivers, then why did local authorities begin to hide speed cameras behind trees, or in bushes?
Why did they begin to camouflage speed cameras by painting them black or green so they could easily blend in at night or when located near trees?
Hidden speed cameras don’t fight speeding drivers. Thy are just used to catch speeders and make money. To stop speeding physical calming solution are needed!

Speed cameras soon stopped being a means to slow cars, calm traffic, and make our roads safer, and instead became a tool for generating a lot of extra money for local councils!
There are of course speed cameras which have been set up with warning signs telling drivers to slow down due to the camera, and even having bright reflective yellow paint on them so they can be easily seen day or night or in bad weather, however this still doesn’t stop criminals from speeding!
And it also doesn’t stop cameras becoming faulty and either not working or taking photos of cars that were in actual fact not speeding!
Hazardous driving near speed cameras
Another problem with speed cameras is the dangerous driving that goes on around them. Drivers will suddenly slam on their breaks as they approach them causing accidents.
Or they will accelerate away back up to a higher speed once safely passing the speed camera!
So overall we can see that speed cameras, for the purpose of slowing down vehicles, are pretty pointless and some would argue that they even promote even more dangerous driving when installed along roads, but a lease they make some money for the government right? Which can be used to improve our country?
Well if this were true it would be great, but it isn’t as the cost of buying, installing and maintaining a speed camera is actually more than they generally generate for the councils! In fact a Gatso speed camera in the UK costs from £20.000 – £40,000 to buy and install and then can cost thousands of extra pounds to keep running!
Disadvantages of speed cameras!
So we have identified a few major problems with speed cameras which desperately need address;
They don’t slow all drivers.
They require on going maintainance.
