I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive the Castlevania team for not making Hector/Isaac a canon couple and its not even about the lack of M/M pairings in the series. As a viewer, the first time they're shown in the premiere of Season 2, Hector is shown walking up to Isaac and places his hand on the other Forgemaster's shoulder. Naturally, Isaac scoffs at the initiation of contact and Hector pulls back awkwardly. This interaction is a clear demonstration that depicts the nature of their relationship; Hector wants to connect with Isaac, most likely due to the fact that he's excited to be around someone that's just like him, while Isaac is indifferent to Hector's attempts at befriending him, because of his severely traumatic past dealt by the scourge of humanity.

Through the course of Season 2, we see the two Forgemasters constantly at odds with one another; Isaac completely giving his all in protecting the ambitions and motives of Dracula while Hector is clearly not on the same page and wishes for humanity to be culled, not killed off entirely. However, its clear that the two Forgemasters respect and trust one another despite their differences in philosophy, otherwise, I'm pretty sure Isaac would have dealt Hector the same fate that was given to Godbrand whose tactlessness cost him his life. In the forest when they are talking about Dracula's court being in complete disarray, I thought this moment would lead to Isaac either killing or turning against Hector after Hector questioned Dracula's tactics. Instead, Isaac hears Hector out, allowing the other man to express his thoughts, even throwing a flirtatious remark Hector's way which completely stuns him.

Even though we see Isaac complain about Hector's naivety when confiding in Dracula about the other Forgemaster's questionable ramblings, he never throws Hector under the bus, instead backing the man. The most interesting aspect of this conversation, in my opinion, was Dracula's response to Isaac's critique of his other general. Dracula makes the point of highlighting their combative relationship, wishing that the two generals were closer in nature. Isaac, at this point in his journey, offers that there is no reason to seek companionship from another human given their current mission of wiping out humanity.

Maybe I'm reading too much into the interactions between Hector and Isaac in Season 2, but them reuniting in Season 4 rekindled my stance of the two as a viable pairing. When Isaac enters his chambers after invading Styria, Hector gives no resistance and fully expects death, because of his treachery against Dracula and alliance with Carmilla (admittedly against his will). However, Isaac being the king that he is, expresses the wisdom that he accumulated along his journey and allows Hector to live. And then the scene with Hector breaking away from the Styrian council occurs; prior to this scene I could have cared less about Hector's fate, but seeing him reclaim his freedom with his own hands was epic. Immediately, a troubled Isaac cauterizes his wound and handles Hector with such a gentleness that it made me cry seeing the scene the first time around.

All I'm saying is the history between these two made me feel things, more than whatever Hector and Lenore had going on.

not sure if you also sent in this earlier ask, but since they're about the same thing i'll just put them together.

i mentioned in a past post that it feels like light and night has multiple genre universes under the umbrella of its main universe (the one we players play) and i still stand by this opinion. it means that every male lead feels like the “otp” when we’re in their “universe” and so all couples have strong chemistry and it just depends on what you personally like.

Sariel = xianxia

Evan = gothic romance

Osborn = wuxia

Jesse = greek tragedy

Charlie = modern drama

SARIEL. this pair can be summed up as the immortal nonhuman + mortal human couple. there are even xianxia tropes here like past lives (still waiting to be confirmed but there’s too many hints), sealed or wiped memories, punishments for defying fate and crossing the interspecies line. these two really give off the feeling of star-crossed soulmates.

EVAN. not only is he a vampire, but also a byronic hero. think of the atmosphere from charlotte bronte, emily bronte, and jane austen but then crank up the gothic romance vibes to something like crimson peak. there is not enough space here—and i’m not eloquent enough—to talk about what vampires represent in classic literature (sexual taboo, transgressions, etc) but just know that light and night writers are well aware of the savagery, inhumanity, and hedonism behind classic vampires and lean into that hard. this is peak monstrous vampire + human couple.

OSBORN. he was a punk, she did ballet. what more can i say? sorry, sorry, but he really attracts good girls who have a rebellious streak. the way this works in a wuxia universe is to think of him as a wandering swordsman who has his own moral code that protects the weak and innocent, not necessarily upholding justice because he kills people but overall doing good. the heroine is the sheltered princess or noble who longs for freedom and adventure and joins this wanderer. meanwhile, the swordsman learns to love and be loved by the innocent girl and has a home that tethers him to the world. they can be summed up as the rogue and noble or, as Osborn would say, it’s the big bad dragon who kidnaps the sword-wielding princess.

JESSE. they’re childhood friend to lovers so there’s no way they don’t have chemistry. what i really like about them (because i normally don’t like this trope) is that they roughhouse more than other childhood friend pairings i’ve seen. they do so much playful ribbing to each other; makes me feel like they’re a college couple. his genre universe comes into play here—and, admittedly the example sounds bad—by forcing a path onto Jesse because of his very nature and the heroine can do nothing but maintain her love for him and pray for his safety, like penelope in odysseus.

CHARLIE. pick any dog blood drama currently playing right now and this is their chemistry, haha, except they’re really steadfast and supportive of each other. but i mean we have evil relatives and conspiracies surrounding them and Charlie is under crushing parental expectations. these two have really sweet soulmate vibes and a fairy tale atmosphere like cinderella and rapunzel, with both of them being princes and princesses for each other.

as for myself, i thought my bias was obvious here but my favorite couple is Osborn and his heroine. i share a lot of her reactions to him so i’m just constantly being flustered and teased by this man. i also really, really admire his untamable and unbreakable spirit. my friends joke all the time about me having a thing for "freedom” men (it’s all in the yearning) but i also adore men who crave to love and be loved and Osborn covers both of these so well.

People feeling bad for Laios at the ending is a common sentiment I see in my notes, more recently because of the this post canon extra and while I understand I think sometimes it's a little infantilizing towards Laios.

The sad points about the ending for him is that

He can't see living monsters anymore

He became a king along with everything it entails (politics)

He can no longer be an adventurer

And it is pretty sad! But I don't think this indicates he had a tragic ending at all? These were all sacrifices he chose to make, it was his decision and the responsible thing to do.

Maybe if he had sacrificed himself in a more "dignified" way people wouldn't feel so bad for him? He complains and he whines because making difficult choices is well... difficult. But in the end nobody is actually forcing him to do any of it. His ending isn't tragic just because he didn't get every single thing he wanted, sacrifices is just something you have to deal with in life, he says himself he's willing to lose things to get what he wants, if we look through the lenses of what he got from the things he sacrificed it's pretty obvious it was worth it

He saved the whole world but more importantly he saved his sister

He helped create a country where humans and demi-humans can coexist

He concentrated his efforts into researching food to help people not go hungry

His ending wasn't sad just because he lost some things, he gained way more, and at the end it was all his own choice to do it

Earlier today I got an hate ask about the ending of Dungeon Meshi that I can only imagine was related to this post, I'm not gonna publish the ask cause I don't wanna incentivize this (go make your own post if you wanna complain) but I'm coming here again to say: the ending was not hell for Laios.

You can feel bad for Laios, he sacrificed a lot after all, but it was all his choice, he accepted all the consequences, even when he complains he doesn't regret it because he did it to save his sister and his friends.

Laios has autonomy and he chose to sacrifice himself, in the end of the Kensuke Monster tidbits Laios isn't just putting Kensuke to rest, he's putting his old life as an adventurer to rest, it took him an year to come to terms with it but he did.

It's a bittersweet ending but it's not a sad ending, Laios finds a new passion and he has a positive impact in the world he's in, he had a fulling life even if it wasn't the 'perfect one'

Everything doesn't need to be 'perfect' to be happy, leaving one dream behind is not the end. It's not because you can't fix everything that you should give up on trying. Life is made of hard choices, you can't always have everything, but you can find happiness anyway.
