A FEW WORDS is all it takes to spin a harmless argument into a full blown shouting match. their home no longer a safety net but a WARZONE, each night a new battle shooting the same empty bullets. he is ZEUS throwing lightning bolt insults, each strike igniting flames behind the others seafoam eyes, and she is ATHENA mighty goddess of war, with her flaming locks and sharp tongue slicing calculated wounds into his electric ego. usually the battlefield would move to the bedroom, their limbs entangling until all that’s left is a mutual white flag raised. this time, however, one lash cuts a bit too deep. it happens almost too quickly for either to realize until it was too late, cali’s wrist grasped tightly in alec’s clutch , pulling her closer until their bodies were inches apart, rage oozing out of his pores causing the lights around them shatter with a resounding POP, and a gasp of surprise to leave her lips — her scream trapped in her throat with the tensing of her body.
A FEW SECONDS pass until harsh eyes soften into confusion and hands release their hold. her fragile frame drops to cool wooden flooring, and he follows behind landing on his knees beside her. this wasn’t happening. she was just unconscious, playing a game and any second she would jump up and say so much for not giving a shit, alec. ‘cali, stop. come on, wake up,’ rugged palms gently shake her limp body, warranting nothing but an idle silence that forms burning lesions in the rear of his throat. “please wake up. i didn’t mean it, any of it. i never did. is that what you want to hear? just WAKE UP.” he moves to her throat, two steady fingers pressing down greeted by a faint pulse, and a wave of relief floods over his features.
A FEW BREATHS are the last that empty from hallowed lungs into night air, and her pulse fades until there is nothing left but skin touching skin. ‘no, no, no, no, NO.’ a frustrated cry bursts from behind a firmly clenched jaw. “not you, anyone but you.” violet sparks ignite from fingertips for the second time, lightly grazing her pale chest causing her to jump at each touch, but her figure remains, vacant and unmoving. he stumbles backwards on the floor before pushing himself up, eyes lingering on the mess he had created. he had killed before, but usually they deserved it —- spoiled ungrateful little brats of people who took life for granted or who had gotten in his way, but she was different, she was cali. his cali. he didn’t love her — he wasn’t sure he could even feel such an emotion, but something deep in that unforgiving black hole of his had cared for her, even if a little —- and that wasn’t a feat easily accomplished. but now she was GONE, in the blink of an eye. just like anything even remotely good that seemed to come his way. and like every other wrong thing that seemed to happen, it was entirely HIS FAULT. it was a harsh reminder that monsters weren’t allowed to have happy endings.
