Random Peasant: Mr. Sir Plague Doctor, where do you get the plague from?
Me: Well, my young degenerate friend, we scholars believe it's a pestilence set upon us by the Heavens due to your sins. *pats peasant gently on head*
Peasant: ...
Me: ...
Peasant: You get it at the flea market!
Dear Diary:
Today I learned a very important lesson that is not taught in Medieval Medical School. Leeches - while a miracle cure sent straight from the Heavens - cannot and will not be sufficient to rid this land of the pestilence that plagues it.
Also worth noting: Nightshade is not an acceptable cure either, and should only be used in the most extraordinary of circumstances. Henceforth, I shall advocate against the use of nightshade, but will continue to push for the use of leeches, as we may just not be using them correctly.
P.S. - Send flowers (not nightshade) to the Beckingtons and express your deepest condolences for their loss, even if it did provide you with a scientific breakthrough.
Me, a doctor and secret poet: "O, trust not the fleas, or they will bring you to your knees with quite a nasty disease."
Dr. Seuss: *clears throat behind me, judgingly*
Me: *continues on* "And while we must'n't trust the fleas, we must certainly trust the bees, for they pollinate our...leaves?"
Dr. Seuss: *clears throat more aggressively*
Me: "Sir, that cough is beginning to sound suspicious. How are your lymph nodes? Are you feeling chilled or have general malaise? And what of your stool? Normal or as free flowing as the Thames?"
Huzzah!
I have come to this land of acrobats and drinking vessels to educate you, one and all, on the daily going-ons of a Plague Doctor! You may also find yourself "learning" about diseases in a way you never before imagined!
A most glorious occupation indeed, and hopefully my 12 apprenticeships of Medieval Medical School shan't go to waste!
