When I first learned that books used to be sold with pages uncut, leaving readers to slice them open with a knife and creating the deckle edges you see in many books, I immediately thought how exciting it would be to have a horror story in this format. It's like a form of personal communication with the story, the cuts getting more and more rushed and haphazard as you reach the climax. I knew there was only one story that could be such a perfect fit, Evening Empire which left me thinking about it and feeling so much dread for days on end.

I chose a sharp lime green color for the top edge foil and ribbon to reference Avada Kedavra and the ships' beams. The designs on the cover and end pages are real crop circles found at important places mentioned in the story. The title page image is the infamous "Mowing Devil" from 1678, which honestly shook me when I first saw it. I had a lot of fun picking out the typography too for the various epistolary sections. Spine was shakily hand-painted. This was my first octavo book format, and I love it for one shots! It's really the perfect size to throw into any bag and have a book to read on hand.

I'm haunted by this author's writing style. Leaving a few drawings here that I've been doing while reading the fic. It's an incredible AU, set during the American Civil War. It's a raw fic, the drugs and the desert are the real main characters.

My "Black Book" (wink) of unsettling wolfstar stories that I have been working on for a while now.

This was a lot of firsts for me: first quarto, sewn endbands, painted edges, and foil. Absolutely delighted with how it turned out.

Size: legal quarto

Bookcloth: Skivertex Ubonga black

Endbands: Au Ver à Soie - Soie Perlée Noir

Paper: Royal Sundance Fiber 24# in Natural (this is gorgeous, it has small dark fibers in it. possibly my favorite paper.)

Endpapers: printed on French Paper 28#

Edges: Liquitex acrylic pigment ink carbon black

Ribbon: grosgrain 1/4" polyester found at thrift store

Foil: Coolprints copper

Happy Mermay! This is fanart of @eyra 's Curlew Cove. When I read the scene of Remus finding Sirius on the sand, I just knew I had to draw it. This was done in charcoal, and it's what I imagined Remus would have drawn if he had sat down to sketch instead of losing his kippers :)

His tail is based on the spiny dogfish shark! They look so cute.

“Lupin didn’t seem pleased that I was filming last night,” Sirius said lightly.

“Most people that come here…” Lily spoke slowly, choosing her words carefully, “Remus put it like this to me once: most people who choose to spend years of their life so far from civilization have a reason for leaving it behind. Remus wanted someone like us and he held out for so long because he expected he would get sent a bunch of finicky artsy types. I don’t think he expected you. And now that you’re here, I don’t think he quite knows what to do with you.”

When wildlife filmmaker Sirius Black arrives on a remote Antarctic island for a year-long assignment, he isn't phased by the freezing wind, the perpetual darkness, or the hostility he meets from some of the biologists at the research base. He is used to living an itinerant existence. He is comfortable with unforgiving conditions. He expects the world to treat him harshly. But he does not expect to fall in love.

This was my second attempt at fanbinding (bound with explicit permission), and my first time making a case-bound book! This story is such a comfort read for me, I love it dearly and find myself constantly going back to it when I crave a slow burn, mature romance. My design inspiration was a combination snowy landscapes, old polar exploration volumes, and of course the typewriter. I wanted it to look like something you might pull from some old university shelves.

A better look at the illustration behind the vellum title sheet, a painting of the lunar corona over the hut during the Terra Nova expedition of Captain R F Scott between 1910-1913. This picture is the closest to what I imagined their base looked like. Unfortunately the vellum sheet wrinkled after I glued in the endpapers, lesson learned!

I also made a fun little "scientific paper" at the end as a nod to the works of the modern scientist crew on Rourke Island!

A lot of firsts for me working with new materials and techniques! BTW I typed the label on the book cover using my typewriter (pictured), had to make Dr Lupin proud.

Remus is sensitive to changing tides, a part of the moon always with him, and Black is like the sea. He can smell it on him, the way his magic builds up and crackles about the fingertips.

I'm excited to share my first foray into fanbinding, featuring one of my favorite wolfstar fics. Please give it a read!

I also included the original illustrations in the story from @hoje--aqui and @a-sunset-outside-my-window (used with explicit permission), and I think they look spectacular!

It's such a romantic and beautifully researched story in such a fantastic setting (Egypt, which has always been an obsession of mine) I knew I needed some way to manifest my adoration into a physical object. I think the printed format makes referencing the footnotes a lot easier too!

I knew immediately that I wanted to try binding it using the Coptic technique with a simple cover, so it would feel like an old dusty tome dug up from somewhere. The inside cover is lined with real papyrus. I loved working on the typeset, and I used an Egyptian lotus for the scene change ornaments. The stars in the sky above the dunes on the belly band are arranged into the a constellation of Altair too, and I included a couple of old lithographs that I felt captured the scenery.

I'm grateful I was allowed to bind this lovely story, it was a very fun project! I already have some ideas of the next stories I'd love to work on.

if you haven't seen my previous post, sirius is a royal knight that meets shepherd remus one day on patrol, they obviously fall madly in love but, remus can't leave his village because of his condition and sirius can't stay for long periods of time since his loyalty will always lay with king james... so, they're doomed, they both know, and i couldn't help but illustrate the angst from remus' pov <3
