Avoid Dangerous and Expensive Pet Injuries this Winter
Winter can be harsh on pets - especially small animals and smooth-coated breeds. Pets need special attention during the winter months.
Lesions on legs from stepping in snow holes, cuts on paws from walking on ice and illnesses from ingesting toxic chemicals are all typical winter-related pet-injuries. These are injuries that can be avoided if pet owners and caregivers are conscientious.
When possible, Sit City Pets urges pet owners and pet-care providers to consider the following preventive measures for maximum health and safety for their pets this winter:
Keep all young, old and short-haired pets inside. These types of pets are more vulnerable to cold weather and should not be left outside for long and without supervision.
Provide shelter for any pets that are left outside. Add straw for additional insulation from the cold and provide a snug, warm bed that does not sit directly on the ground.
Leave extra food and water in plastic bowls for any pets that are left outside.
Learn the signs and symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect you pet is suffering from either of these conditions.
Clip the long hair on the bottom of your dog’s feet before the snow and ice fall. This will prevent the build up of ice balls which can be painful and difficult to remove.
Trim your pet’s nails regularly during the winter. Pets may have a difficult time trying to maintain solid footing in icy conditions with long nails.
Find a warm place for your pets to sleep. All pets, including small caged pets need to be kept warm and away from drafts.
Place pet-safe wipes by the door. Ice-melting chemicals and salt can irritate and burn the pads of your pet’s paws. Thoroughly wipe off your pet’s paws when he comes inside.
Use antifreeze and other household chemicals that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol, which is extremely poisonous to pets.
Get in the habit of banging on the hood of your car before starting the engine. Cats and wildlife seek warmth and climb into the engine during cold months.
If winter travel will keep you away from your home and pets, book the services of a professional pet sitter in advance to ensure your pets are safe and comfortable.

Preparing for Your Pet Sitter
Keep these reminders in mind when preparing for your pet sitter's visit:
Be sure to confirm your schedule! Make your reservations as far in advance as possible. If you are coming home earlier or later than expected, please remember to call your sitter . This will allow the pet sitter to plan for extra visits or, serve additional clients, or make adjustments.
Make sure your pet sitter has all your keys, garage door opener and/or any other items or codes necessary to enter your home. If you have an alarm system, don’t forget to notify your service that your pet sitter will be entering your home. Please make sure that outdoor and indoor lighting is working before you go.
Have everything necessary to care for your pet. This includes food, treats, food and water bowls, medications, leash, ID tags, collars or walking harness, can opener, toys, paper towels, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, litter and scoop, broom and dustpan and/or vacuum cleaner, towels, newspapers or puppy pads, etc. It is a good idea to leave extra supplies such as food, medicine, and other pet supplies.
Be sure to leave doggy plastic bags (larger for cat litter disposal) for sanitary disposal of pet feces.
Inform the pet sitter if bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms or any other household areas are off limits to your pet and/or sitter.
For the comfort of your pet, adjust the thermostat before leaving on your trip and advise your pet sitter within what range to keep it.
Will other people be checking on your pet? If so, help avoid confusion by making it clear what the pet sitter is responsible for and what other visitors will be entrusted to do.
Notify your veterinarian in writing that a pet sitter will be caring for your pet. You will want to authorize the vet to extend medical care during your absence if it becomes necessary.
If you’re leaving anything specifically for your pet sitter such as homegrown produce, candies, a monetary tip, etc, be sure to leave a note.
Last but not least, leave an emergency contact with phone number and the name of the place you are traveling to. If you are working, leave the name of your company and a phone number. This information is for an emergencies that may happen while you are away.
