“His first day was on location with Kylie Minogue, but all eyes, even Kylie’s, were on Bernard. He’d turned up with a suitcase full of props, just in case, including a rubber chicken. And what an actor. Oh, really though, what a wonderful actor. We once took him to the TV Choice Awards and sent him up on his own to collect the award, and the entire room stood up and cheered him. That’s a lovely memory. He’d phone up and say, ‘I’ve got an idea! What if I attack a Dalek with a paintball gun?!’ Okay, Bernard, in it went! He loved Gill with all his heart; he mentioned her in every conversation we ever had. A love story for the ages. I’m so lucky to have known him. Thanks for everything, my old soldier. A legend has left the world.” — Russell T. Davies
BERNARD JOSEPH CRIBBINS, OBE (29th December 1928—28th July 2022)
Hey babe, i was watching doctor who and amy and rory’s relationship reminded me of us. But i was always roman around with 11 other women while i was always leavin you to wait by a pond. I should’ve treated you better. And girl, what we did in bed would make angels weep
you can always tell which dr who fans actually watched moffat’s era and especially capaldi’s era and ESPECIALLY series 10 because the ones who didn’t will be like “i can’t believe moffat supports trans rights 🤯”. like i’d ask if you watched the show but we all know you didn’t
it's funny bc i was so deep into my moffat hate when he was showrunner that for most of capaldi's run i was still waiting for him to fuck up despite loving basically all of it. like i even convinced myself for a second that heaven sent wasn't that good bc seeing near universal praise for one of his episodes just felt wrong after years of absorbing memes about he was The Worst™. it wasn't until series 10 where i was like oh. i can trust this show. i've been enjoying this for years. this is actually my favorite era of the show. maybe steven moffat isn't the antichrist and i was just being a hyperbolic teenager reading into every story by this guy in as bad faith as possible
i mean i certainly don't think he's free from criticism, i still don't vibe with a lot of choices made in eleven's run and you can nitpick dumb things he's said in interviews, but the fact that the discussion and critique surrounding his work basically hasn't changed in ten years and is mostly driven by people who dropped doctor who ages ago is just annoying more than anything
Seeing people react to the new Dr Who news by using it as an opportunity to dunk on Moffat for easily disproven hyperbolic 'criticism', when he made some of (in my opinion) the best and most moving episodes of the show is so sad
Folks, I'm begging you to go watch the Capaldi era and believe the evidence of your own eyes and ears over a hbomberguy youtube video and yourfaveisproblematic tumblr post
guess im gonna have to watch sex education now huh
I love him already
The BBC has today announced Ncuti Gatwa is the new Doctor set to take charge of the TARDIS.
Star of stage and screen, Ncuti is best known for his critically acclaimed performance in Sex Education as the iconic Eric Effiong, for which he was awarded Best Actor Award at the Scottish BAFTA’s in 2020 as well as numerous nominations including Best Male Performance in a comedy programme at this year’s BAFTA’s.
Speaking of his new role, Ncuti said: “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”
Russell T Davies, Showrunner adds: “The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!”
i care about doctor who again.
Ncuti Gatwa and Russell T Davies speak to BBC News about today's Fourteenth Doctor announcement.
The Chibnall era leaves a bad taste in my mouth for its attitude in how it addresses the previous era(s). I don't mean continuity wise - The Timeless Child plot isn't great, but ignoring or adapting canon is Doctor Who's thing. That kind of thing doesn't really bother me too much.
The problem for me is that the Chibnall era doesn't really feel like a continuation of the previous era. Rather than critiquing or subverting or otherwise directly addressing certain aspects that came before, Chibnall Who just straight up pretends it never happened.
Introduce a nuanced look at The Master and their motivations and the like in the form of Missy?
Openly criticise wiping people's memories without their consent not once but twice?
Address the issue of The Doctor falling for someone when they know one of them has a limited life left to live, coming to the conclusion that it's not about a happy ending but simply about time?
All gone. All go unaddressed.
If Chibs disagrees with aspects of his predecessors vision of the show, or certain tropes he used or whatever, then explore that damnit! There's plenty you could critique, plenty you could develop, plenty you could dive deep into. And Chibs just... doesn't. And it's so fucking frustrating.
The Moffat era feels like a response to RTDs. It's the same show, just a continuation that evolves and changes. Heck, the later Moff series' feel like a response to his earlier ones. But the Chibnall era feels like it simply does a factory reset on half the topics explored in the previous eras, Moffat's in particular.
It doesn't feel like a response, it just feels like the show fell down a flight of stairs and got amnesia.
not caught up but i saw the preview for thirteen's final episode and. well. all i can say is that it's the most chibnall move of all time to shove like 40 returning characters into a finale at the last minute. because as we all know big casts have been this era's strong suit.
doctor companion relationships be like what if we didn't kiss but shared a love for each other that was so strong it defies time and space? what if we held hands
what if we never said I love you but only smiled whenever we hear each others name? and we were both time travellers.
