The moment when the Kiri ninjas are going towards Obito with a sword and then he activates Kamui and they go through him is, easily, one of the most impactful about the brutality of the situation (since these ninja kinda spear their teammate instead of skewering Obito due to it). But??? It could have so easily changed everything???
Let's say that Obito's control over the Mangekyo hadn't been so precise in that moment. The sword could have easily hit. Now, it's up for debate if the Zetsu around Obito would have been enough for him to not be affected or at least walk it off, but guessing by his instinct of using Kamui instead of risking a strike, let's say it wouldn't have been.
Not only could that leave Madara without his much needed pawn, but also reveal a lot about the Zetsus due to Obito's patchwork body at that point, not quite settled smoothly with the rest.
Let's say Obito got lucky and survived, then. Even if he did, Madara's seal on him could have been affected depending on how the sword went through his body. Like, look at that picture. One of those swords is definitely near the heart area.
I don't know, y'all. Like, yeah, super traumatizing and everything, but was it really worth it to take so many risks, Madara?
Lots of people in fanfics write about how Obito doesn't go back to the cave and instead stays with Kakashi or Rin's body or something (myself included). But like, that's the least likely, since Madara basically commanded him to come back when he left the cave. "You will return here to me". Real smooth, grandpa, but that was totally you giving a command to Obito through the seal, you aren't subtle.
