love wearing a billowing white night gown in the summer. I feel like a ghost slinking around my house.
Being 14 in the summer felt like:
Mosquitos and crickets buzzing so loud your head feels like it’s vibrating . Being so hot you can smell the grass cooking, not being able to stand too long in the creek cause your feet are going numb. Staying up late to watch a scary movie and ignoring that you feel something behind you. Never being able to scrub away the dirt from underneath your fingernails. Starving. Nosey old ladies that smell like cigarettes and floral perfume. Digging through the junk drawer for change to buy a slurpee. Pretending your tough and a badass even though your scared to be alone. Never feeling girl enough when you wear a dress. Everyone knowing everyone’s name. A passive aggressive smile at the grocery store. Bumming a cigarette and feeling unstoppable. Riding bikes in the middle of the road. Skipping class in the bathroom and getting caught. Tv static. Laying on the cold tile and looking for shapes in your popcorn ceiling. Not caring if you live or die. Pinkie swears. Getting high for the first time and feeling you’ll never breathe right. Running as fast as you can with no destination. Sliding under barbed wire fences. Hearing coyotes at night and getting the shivers. Smelling chew and thinking of home. Stealing skittles at the gas station. Being in love with your best friend. Driving for hours and going into a trance as you stare at the window. Dreading september.
